What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this high wind warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Denver/Boulder, CO wrote its last area forecast discussion before this high wind warning went out at Apr 5, 10:26 AM MDT, 4 hours 33 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 5, 10:26 AM MDT, 4 hours 33 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO
1026 AM MDT Tue Apr 5 2022

.UPDATE...
Issued at 951 AM MDT Tue Apr 5 2022

Forecast is mostly on track this morning. The cold front tracking
across the plains has been a bit stronger than expected, and
there appears to have been just enough convergence over the Denver
metro to force a couple weak rain/graupel showers. Further north,
we're seeing stronger gusts and substantial surface drying,
especially in Larimer County. The Buckeye RAWS recently recorded a
gust to 75mph with a few other stations flirting with the low to
mid 60mph range. These winds are still expected to continue and
expand into the rest of the plains and most of the urban corridor
this afternoon where High Wind Warnings are in effect until 9PM.

Over the mountains, light snow continues to fall, especially above
9000 feet or so. Very strong winds... including a few gusts over
100 mph... have been noted at a few ski resorts, and the
combination of snow and wind will lead to difficult travel through
this evening. The current headlines and snow/wind grids look
reasonable and very little changes were made there.

Perhaps the most important question left for today is what happens
to the low-level moisture. Dew points upstream in Wyoming are in
the single digits to teens, and the HRRR suggests dew points
dropping significantly over the plains by the mid-afternoon. We
should see humidities fall into the 15-25% range (perhaps even
lower if the HRRR is correct) for several hours this afternoon.
While the exact T/Td/RH values in our grids may not be perfect -
the overall story remains the same... near-critical/critical fire
weather conditions are likely this afternoon and evening across
the plains... and Red Flag Warnings will remain in effect until
9PM.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 542 AM MDT Tue Apr 5 2022

The mountain wave is bringing strong and gusty winds down into
the foothills this morning and our High Wind Warning for the
foothills remains in effect through 9 AM. Widespread orographic
showers and strong winds in the high country will persist this
morning as the upper low passes to our north near the Canadian
border. Northwesterly to westerly flow aloft will continue to
increase and the nose of a strong jet moves overhead. Expect
further snowfall accumulations through tonight of generally 2 to
5 inches across the mountains and 5 to 10 inches in a few favored
areas of the Front Range. Strong winds will continue to gust 60
to 70 mph, causing blowing snow and difficult travel conditions. A
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the mountains
through midnight tonight. Showers will gradually decrease in
coverage and intensity through the afternoon and evening.

The front is moving through Wyoming and will move over northeast
Colorado this morning. Expect strong northwesterly winds 30 to 40
mph gusting up to 65 mph across the plains by afternoon. We have
upgraded almost all of our plains to a High Wind Warning from 9 AM
through 9 PM. Much of our plains will also have near-critical
humidity of 15 to 20 percent during peak afternoon gusts, which
will mean critical fire weather conditions in many areas. We have
maintained our Red Flag Warning for our plains, from 11 AM through
9 PM.

The front will also bring cooler air and a few light rain
showers to the lower elevations. Temperatures should fall around
10 to 15 F, with highs down to the 50s on the plains and 20s and
30s in the high country. There may also be some areas of blowing
dust on drier parts of the northern and eastern plains late this
morning through the early evening.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)
Issued at 542 AM MDT Tue Apr 5 2022

A shortwave will drop south across northeastern Colorado on
Wednesday, maintaining the strong northerly low/mid level flow.
There are mixed signals about whether the winds will be a bit less
or a bit more than today. The low level forcing looks to be a bit
less, so we're favoring a bit less wind for areas close to the
mountains, but there could be a little more over the northeast
corner where deep mixing will mean the larger scale/deeper wind
field will have more of an impact. We've issued a High Wind Watch
for Wednesday for the northeast plains, but left the Front Range
cities out of it thinking the risk there is lower. By Thursday the
whole pattern has shifted east, with some warm advection aloft
resulting in less mixing and weaker gradients. It will still be
windy and the warming will keep humidities low, but it doesn't
look like much of a high wind threat.

Friday is as much of a break as we will get. Winds should be
turning around to southerly near the mountains and should be
relatively light. It may still be a bit breezy on the plains, and
the warming will keep humidities low. For the weekend, Saturday
will feature southwest flow aloft with a bit more wind. This will
likely be the warmest day and could be another significant fire
weather day. An upstream trough approaches for some chance of rain
and cooling, and possibly continue windy conditions on Sunday and
Monday. Hopefully there will be more humidity and at least a
little precipitation but the details on the structure and
location of this system aren't clear yet.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)
Issued at 951 AM MDT Tue Apr 5 2022

Main concerns in the TAF period will be near ILS-cigs in the early
afternoon, along with continued gusty winds through the evening.
Cold front has passed through the terminals this AM which has led
to a few light SHRA across the metro with cigs lowering into the
050-070 range. Expect this activity won't last much past 18z.
Winds should also shift back to the northwest this afternoon and
strengthen, with a few gusts above 45kt possible. Winds will
gradually decrease overnight with gusty winds returning Wednesday.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 542 AM MDT Tue Apr 5 2022

Strong northwesterly winds 30 to 40 mph gusting up to 65 mph
across the plains this afternoon coincident with near-critical
humidity of 15 to 20 percent will mean critical fire weather
conditions in many areas. Strong winds will likely cause rapid
growth of any fires. We have maintained our Red Flag Warning for
our plains, from 11 AM through 9 PM.

Wednesday will be similar to today, and a Fire Weather Watch has
been issued for the plains from Fort Morgan and Limon eastward.
Thursday will still be windy, but winds will not be as strong as
the previous days. Humidities will still be low. Friday will have
less wind but will still be dry, with afternoon breezes on the
plains. Saturday looks warmer, dry and with more wind again so
that could be another significant fire weather day. We'll trend
towards cooler temperatures for Sunday and Monday, but it will
likely still be windy. There may be some moderation of humidities
and light precipitation, but that's not clear so there could still
be fire weather issues on these days.
