The forecast today remains generally on track. Satellite this
morning shows a few areas of clouds across Lincoln county and
across the far northeastern corner of the state, with little else
to note. Did bump up highs a couple of degrees across the plains
and Middle/North Park this afternoon.

More notable changes were made for tomorrow's highlights. The High
Wind Watch has been expanded into Denver where operational and
MOS guidance suggest 50kt wind gust potential in the afternoon.
Also added the northern Foothills into tomorrow's RFW. Though
humidity/winds may be a bit more marginal there, didn't see a
reason to keep that zone out. Additional discussion and grid
changes will come in the early afternoon with the bigger forecast
package.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 344 AM MDT Thu Apr 21 2022

There is limited upper level cloudiness streaming eastward over
the CWA in the zonal flow aloft early this morning. At the lower
levels, there is a Denver Cyclone in place with relatively weak
wind speeds.

This morning's zonal flow is expected to become west-southwesterly by
this afternoon, then due southwesterly tonight.  Models have weak QG
ascent for the forecast area today and tonight in advance of an
approaching upper trough.  Moisture is pretty sparse today. However,
low level southeasterly flow will advect-in some moisture into the
plains tonight. Various dew point progs show 40s to lower 50s F
readings overnight. As a result, some model's show stratus over
about half of the plains after 06Z tonight. It will be very
shallow and precipitation is not expected. High temperatures today
look to be 10-15 F above seasonal normals for this date.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

...POTENTIALLY HIGH IMPACT WEATHER EVENT ACROSS NORTHEAST COLORADO
FRIDAY...INCLUDING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS...

A deep upper level trough and accompanying strong mid/upper
tropospheric jet will move east across the Central Rockies and
Colorado Friday into Friday night. Strong pressure falls will
occur with all factors favorable for strong lee cyclogenesis over
northeast Colorado, including warm advection, positive vorticity
advection/deep QG vertical ascent centered just to our north, and
strong daytime surface heating. This rapidly deepening and intense
storm system then lifts to the northeast on Saturday.
Unfortunately, most of the precipitation from this event will only
occur in the mountains with most of the plains remaining dry with
extreme fire weather conditions. We'll break down the hazards
below.

Fire Weather: Ahead of this storm system, the low and mid levels
are extremely dry, as evidenced by upstream observations with many
observations showing dewpoints in the teens across the Desert
Southwest. In addition, we'll see strong southerly winds develop
from late morning through early afternoon across the southern
portions of the forecast area, spreading northward across the
plains and to the Wyoming border area by early to mid afternoon.
Any low level moisture will be scoured out of the forecast area by
early afternoon (earlier over the Palmer Divide). Minimum humidity
is likely to drop into the 6 to 10 percent range, and this combined
with winds gusting to 45 to 60 mph will create extremely dangerous
fire weather conditions. Fuel conditions are still ripe with only
limited and shallow green-up in some areas. Unfortunately, should
a fire start it would be difficult or impossible to control given
these conditions which would last into early evening.

Winds and Blowing Dust: South winds will first increase across
the Palmer Divide area as the low level downslope gradient
intensifies, and then those strong, gusty winds will gradually
spread northward across the rest of the forecast area with
increased mixing during the day. If there's one positive thing,
the core of the maximum mid level winds (50-60 knots) doesn't
arrive until very late in the afternoon or early evening. Thus,
we'll be on the front edge of the maximum potential for high
winds. Nonetheless, the potential for high winds is certainly
there as we do see 50 knots at 700 mb arriving late in the day,
and the strong low level gradients really intensify with deep and
rapid cyclogenesis in northeast Colorado. Thus, we've expanded the
High Wind Watch up to and including most of the I-76 Corridor
northeast of Denver, with potential gusts around 60 mph. Given
the antecedent and widespread dry conditions across eastern
Colorado into New Mexico and the Desert Southwest, expect areas
of blowing dust and poor visibility during the afternoon and early
evening hours, with hazardous travel conditions. We would not be
surprised if we'd need to issue a Blowing Dust Advisory or Dust
Storm Warning on Friday due to these contributing factors. The
most prone areas would be I-70 east of Denver through Limon, and
I-76 Corridor Wiggins/Fort Morgan to the Nebraska border.

Thunderstorms: Models are in actually decent synoptic agreement
with regard to ingredients and location, although the exact
evolution of the dryline is still uncertain. We wouldn't be
surprised to see the dryline push just east into Nebraska and
northwest Kansas Friday afternoon, only to nudge back westward in
the early evening hours due to strong meridional flow coupled
with strong QG lift and continued pressure falls over northeast
Colorado. Thus, there's still a threat of an isolated severe storm
or two over the far northeast corner of Colorado in the Julesburg
and Holyoke areas Friday evening. Low level wind shear is
impressive to say the least, so something to watch closely should
a boundary layer originated storm be able to pop through the dry
elevated but unstable layer just above. Large hail and even a
tornado threat should that occur.

Mountain snow: We're still on track to see rain and snow spread
into the mountain areas late Friday afternoon and evening, and
then snow showers Friday night through Saturday. Some potential we
could get enough snow (3-8") and impacts over the passes to
warrant a Winter Weather Advisory at some point, with the highest
totals favored areas along/north of a Rabbit Ears to RMNP line.

Moving beyond this powerful storm system, we'll see lingering
troughiness and continued cold advection through Sunday. Thus,
we'll keep some threat of showers in the forecast, some of which
could spread onto the plains behind an anticyclonic upslope surge
Sunday afternoon. However, no significant precipitation is
expected. Mountain areas could pick up another inch or two of
snow.

Dry weather will return in all areas by later Monday into Tuesday.
Unfortunately this appears to last through much of next week. In
addition, it will be turning warmer which could bring enhanced
fire weather conditions back into the picture.

South-southeasterly winds will continue through the afternoon with
a few gusts to 30kt possible. Gusts will decrease overnight with
southerly flow remaining. Some low stratus is possible early
tomorrow morning but is expected to stay north of DEN/BJC.
Stronger winds are likely by late tomorrow morning and will
continue through much of the day, slowly shifting from SSW to
Werly. Some blowing dust will also be possible at DEN in the
afternoon, but visby restrictions appear unlikely.

.FIRE WEATHER...

...EXTREME FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS STILL ANTICIPATED FOR FRIDAY
ACROSS THE FOOTHILLS AND PLAINS...

Will leave the Red Flag Warning going in fire weather zone 214,
Park County, today from noon into the early evening, based on low
relative humidity and high enough wind gusts. Although these
parameters are marginal for a warning, fuels are quite dry and
fire starts are becoming common place occurrence these dry spring
days.

Friday will be the most extreme day for fire weather as strong
southwest winds gusting to 40-60 mph will combine with humidity
values of 6 to 10 percent over most of the lower elevations and
southern foothill locations. The most volatile areas will extend
from Park, Jefferson, and Douglas Counties east and northeast
across the plains where the strongest winds and lowest humidity
values will combine forces during the afternoon and evening.
Northern foothills (northwest of Boulder to WY line) seem somewhat
protected by the southerly flow, although conditions may still
approach critical values for a few hours Friday afternoon. Energy
Release Components (ERC) are near above the 90th percentile for
the southern foothills and adjacent plains, while the HDWI values
are near the 95th percentile plus.

Humidity values increase for Saturday and Sunday, but it will be
at least breezy if not windy in some areas during this time. Then
warmer temperatures and lower humidity can be expected into the
middle part of next week. Winds may occasionally become strong
enough to bring elevated if not critical conditions to some areas.

...EXTREME FIRE WEATHER AND VERY WINDY FRIDAY FOR THE LOWER
ELEVATIONS AND THE EAST SLOPES OF THE FRONT RANGE...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Warm and dry weather is expected this afternoon with critical
fire weather conditions in Park County where a Red Flag Warning is
in effect from noon to 8 PM MDT. Elevated fire weather conditions
are expected over the plains and foothills this afternoon and
early evening. Temperatures will be well above seasonal normals
over the plains and foothills today.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Extreme fire weather conditions are expected on Friday, with the
most dangerous conditions existing from the foothills of
Jefferson, Park, and Douglas counties east and northeast across
the plains. Very warm, dry, and windy weather would create
dangerous conditions, making any new wildfire difficult if not
impossible to control. If you live in a vulnerable area, it would
be prudent to have a go bag ready with important documents,
medications, and valuables in the event of an evacuation.

The strong winds on Friday will also create blowing dust and
hazardous travel conditions. I-70 and I-76 east and northeast of
Denver, as well as many other highways across eastern Colorado,
could have severely impacted travel and possible road closures due
to poor visibility.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms east of Sterling and
Akron Friday evening. If there are storms, a severe storm with
damaging winds and large hail would be possible. There is a slight
chance of light showers across the rest of the plains.

Mountain areas will see rain and snow showers develop late Friday
afternoon, continuing through Saturday. A few inches of snow can
be expected, with slick travel conditions possible over some of
the mountain passes.

Dry and warmer weather is expected to redevelop for much of next
week.
