Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 1227 PM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 .UPDATE... Issued at 1227 PM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 We have allowed the Winter Weather Advisory to expire on time. Some patchy blowing and drifting snow continues, but conditions have been steadily improving. Elsewhere, light snow is becoming more widespread across western North Dakota. Only low impacts are expected through the afternoon. UPDATE Issued at 934 AM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 Several changes were made to headlines for this update. In the near term period, the Winter Weather Advisory was cancelled for Divide, Burke, and Renville Counties, where conditions have improved. The advisory continues for Bottineau, Rolette, and Pierce Counties. Surface observations and webcams show eastern parts of Rolette and Pierce Counties are experiencing near blizzard conditions this morning. Timing adjustments were made to the Winter Storm Watch. The start time for Burleigh and Emmons Counties was moved up to 6 PM CST this evening, and counties east of there were moved up to 9 PM CST. Additionally, a mention of potential blizzard conditions was added to the counties whose watch begins at 9 PM. UPDATE Issued at 613 AM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 Snow from the Clipper is on the decrease but will linger with some blowing snow over the next couple hours central and east. Another shot of light precipitation may make its way into the northwest from northeastern Montana later this morning. Strong winds have filtered in behind the front but will gradually diminish through the day from west to east, remaining breezy. For this update, the main changes were to tweak sky cover and precipitation chances to better account for the latest trends. Otherwise, just blended in the latest observations to the going forecast. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Monday) Issued at 407 AM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 A Clipper continues to race southeast across eastern North Dakota with a cold front extending to its west. This front is the focus of widespread light to moderate snow across the northern third of the state, matching up well with the low level frontogenesis fields plotted on the latest SPC mesoanalysis. While snowfall rates may be temporarily elevated given strong upper level Q-vector divergence overlapping strong low level frontogenesis, the dendritic growth zone isn't terribly deep here and the Clipper will move through fairly quickly. Still, we are expecting a wide swath of 1 to 4 inches of total snowfall by the time the system moves out (generally along and north of Highway 2). The highest amounts are expected to be close to the International Border where the Winter Weather Advisory is in effect. Winds will also shift to out of the north behind the front, becoming breezy to windy. Areas of blowing snow will cause significant visibility reductions through the night as we have already seen a few stations across the far north fall to a half mile at times. As the cold front moves through, most will see their highs this morning with temperatures falling through the day as strong cold air advection wins out over the traditional diurnal trends. Another wave approaches late this afternoon and into the evening, bringing height falls to the southwest and eventually the south central. It is looking more and more like we will see heavy banded snow setup somewhere around the North/South Dakota border tomorrow night into Monday but plenty of questions remain. Models are in agreement that we will see strong upper level Q-vector divergence and strong frontogenesis, but the overlap is not ideal. That being said, models are forecasting steep mid level lapse rates and EPV values around zero or slightly negative around the South Dakota border overnight. Additionally, there should be an area of strong omega maximized in the dendritic growth zone. Ensemble trends over the past few runs have been to jog north with the axis of heaviest snow, so we have expanded the Winter Storm Watch north a tier of counties accordingly. Areas along and just south I-94 remain the most uncertain regarding totals for the moment as a tight gradient will setup on the northern periphery of the band. A slight jog to the north or south by just a few miles could translate to large differences in totals here. These northern fringes of the band (including the Dickinson, BisMan, and Jamestown areas) could see somewhere in the 3 to 5 inch range with some totals approaching the 7 to 10 inch range along the South Dakota border. Light snow should continue across the south through the afternoon on Monday. The other story for the short term will be the return of dangerous wind chills tonight and Monday. By Monday morning, we will see widespread wind chills in the 30s below zero with some stations around 40 below across the east. These frigid temperatures will remain in place pretty much through the day. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Saturday) Issued at 407 AM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 Light snow lingers across the south Monday night, ending across the southern James River Valley by early Tuesday. Frigid temperatures and dangerous to life threatening wind chills remain in the forecast Tuesday through Thursday morning as arctic high pressure settles in. Most will see highs below zero Tuesday and Wednesday and long duration wind chill headlines will likely be needed in the coming days. Towards the end of the week and into the weekend, ensembles are suggesting a bit of a warmup with highs returning closer to normal. After snow moves out of the south Tuesday, the long term looks to be dry for now. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1227 PM CST Sun Feb 20 2022 Light snow with MVFR ceilings and MVFR/IFR visibility will continue across western North Dakota this afternoon. Heavy snow will then develop across southern North Dakota this evening into tonight, and continue through the forecast period. Expect MVFR ceilings and IFR to LIFR visibility at KDIK, KBIS, and KJMS. KXWA could return to VFR conditions later tonight. KMOT could see a period of MVFR ceilings and light snow later this afternoon and evening, with VFR conditions expected otherwise.
