No major changes with this update. Despite some areas of blowing
snow and reduced visibility after midnight across the James River
Valley, the Winter Weather Advisory will be allowed to expire at
midnight as gradually improving conditions over the next few hours
are expected.

UPDATE Issued at 911 PM CST Tue Jan 18 2022

For late evening update main change was to extend the winter
weather advisory until midnight over the James River Valley. Over
this area, sustained winds continue to blow in the lower 30s with
gusts into the 40s, resulting in continued visibility restrictions
due to blowing snow. With that said, the trend for the wind should
continue downward, so expect the blowing snow to ease up by
midnight. Wind/winter weather headlines were allowed to expire
elsewhere as winds have gradually eased up some, so now the
frigid wind chills are the main concern.

UPDATE Issued at 608 PM CST Tue Jan 18 2022

Winds have diminished enough to allow wind advisory to expire over
many western counties. With that said, windy conditions do
continue, though a very gradual easing of the winds will continue.
Remainder of forecast which was well discussed earlier remains on
track, with visibility continuing to be rather variable but still
lousy in areas under the winter weather advisory.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)
Issued at 254 PM CST Tue Jan 18 2022

Strong winds and blowing snow impacts into this evening, followed
by dangerous wind chills tonight and Wednesday highlight the short
term forecast.

As of 20 UTC, the surface pressure rise maxima in the wake of the
Arctic cold front is centered over the Red River valley, and will
continue shifting away from the area. Thus, the isallobaric wind
component which was the primary driver of the highest winds today
will continue to diminish this evening. However, we expect gusts
mainly in the 35 to 45 kt range to continue area-wide into the 00
to 03 UTC time range thanks to continued cold air advection and a
well-mixed boundary layer containing winds on that order. The main
impact through the day has been blowing snow in northern and parts
of central ND, especially from Burke County southeast to Minot and
into the Harvey, Carrington, and Jamestown areas. Satellite shows
well-defined blowing snow plumes embedded in Horizontal Convective
Rolls (HCRs), which have been becoming somewhat more widespread in
that corridor as temperatures fall to 0 F or below, increasing the
ability for snow to be lofted, especially in areas where the heavy
snow fell late last week and strong winds today eroded any crust.
ASOS/AWOS visibilities have been in the 1/2SM to 1/4SM range over
much of that corridor today, but web camera images have suggested
that the lowest visibilities are not especially widespread, which
has resulted in impacts not quite sufficient for an upgrade to a
Blizzard Warning.

After much consideration and collaboration, we have decided to
continue the Winter Weather Advisory and messaging near-blizzard
conditions through this evening, with the idea that the lowest
visibilities are not spatially (or in some cases not temporally)
sufficient for the upgrade to a Blizzard Warning. We will however
continue to monitor the situation, especially since satellite
trends do suggest some increase in HCRs and related blowing snow
plumes recently, perhaps as the boundary layer depth shrinks a
bit. Interestingly, those satellite images also suggest blowing
snow is being transported as far south as Burleigh County, where
the pre-existing snowpack on the ground is indeed sufficiently
crusted to not be broken even with the winds today.

We expect winds to ever-so-slowly diminish this evening, but the
boundary layer is expected to remain well-mixed in the cold air
advection regime, and the upstream surface high is only slowly
expected to reach southern Saskatchewan by 12 UTC. The surface
pressure gradient will also accordingly maintain breezy winds
tonight over all of western and central ND, and over central ND
on Wednesday. Cold air advection is also expected to drive lows
tonight mainly in the -10 to -20 F range, and highs Wednesday a
few degrees either side of zero F. Combined with the wind, wind
chills will be hazardous, so we have posted a Wind Chill Advisory
beginning at 03 UTC tonight (when the Winter Weather and Wind
Advisories are set to end). We continued the Wind Chill Advisory
over all but southwestern ND through Thursday morning since we
expect the wind chills to remain dangerous through that period.
Wind chills recover enough over southwestern ND to allow the
advisory there to be in effect only through 18 UTC Wednesday at
this juncture.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

Very cold air will linger across the area Wednesday night and
Thursday morning as the surface high settles across the region.
NBM-based lows Wednesday night and Thursday morning mainly range
from -15 to -25 F over northwestern and central ND, where wind
chills will remain dangerously low and may even necessitate an
upgrade to a Wind Chill Warning at some point. Lows will still be
below zero in southwestern ND, too, even though weak warm air
advection may begin there by Thursday morning.

In the big picture, the long term period will be dominated by
north-northwest flow aloft between mean ridging off the west coast
and a trough from eastern Canada into the Great Lakes region. The
amplification of both those features, and embedded waves within
the fast-moving north-northwest flow aloft, lends considerable
uncertainty in the day-to-day sensible weather over western and
central ND. As a result, spread in the 25th to 75th percentiles of
high temperatures from NBM membership is on the order of 20+ F on
many days, with potential outcomes ranging from highs around 5 F
to 35 F. It does appear one area of relative confidence is for a
warmer day on Friday in association with a fast-moving shortwave
trough which may also generate light precipitation, likely mostly
in the form of snow. Thereafter, the aforementioned uncertainty
grows beginning Saturday as the baroclinic zone is likely to be
oriented northwest-southeast somewhere across the Northern Plains.
That boundary may also serve as the focus for light snowfall when
shortwave troughs cross the region, which results in several
chances of light snowfall in the forecast into early next week.

TAF period with strong winds bringing blowing snow. Gradual

northwest into central North Dakota with breezy northwest winds.
