Sfc obs shows a cold front pushing into the region invof Divide
and Williams counties. The current package is representative of
the changes to come the short term, therefore no major changes
were made to the forecast.

Insolation has improved wind chills across the region, therefore
the Wind Chill Advisory was allowed to expire. No changes to the
current forecast package.

UPDATE Issued at 535 AM CST Thu Mar 10 2022

No changes to the forecast are needed with this update, just
blended in the latest observations. A few patches of low clouds
are present across the CWA at this time, likely producing a few
flurries. However, the coverage of these clouds/flurries is too
low for mention in the forecast grids. The wind chill advisory
looks to be in good shape for now, although WC values may not be
quite as low as expected by this time across some areas. Temperatures
will quickly warm after sunrise ahead of the incoming cold front.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 325 AM CST Thu Mar 10 2022

The focus of the short term will be on a clipper system that will
bring another round of strong winds, snow showers, blowing snow,
and even colder air to the area.

The shortwave associated with the clipper low is currently
centered over northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, and will race
towards North Dakota through the morning hours. With the approach
of the system, southwesterly winds will also increase through the
morning, helping temperatures rebound quickly prior to the arrival
of a strong cold front. This front is expected to reach the
northwestern corner of the state around 20Z, likely bringing with
it a band of snow showers and enhanced northwesterly winds. The
strongest (potentially advisory level) winds are expected to be
immediately behind the front, with diminished, yet still strong,
winds to follow. Due to uncertainty with how long the strongest
winds may last, a wind advisory will not be issued at this time,
but could be needed later based on trends and upstream
observations.

Precipitation-wise, CAMs are consistently resolving a band of snow
showers developing right along the front as it moves through the
state. With the snowfall and strong winds, significant visibility
reductions will be possible for a brief amount of time. With
steep low level lapse rates and cyclonic flow aloft, isolated to
scattered snow showers are also expected behind the initial front
and potential snow band.

The cold front will push completely through the CWA by 06Z
Thursday night, with relatively strong northwest winds continuing
into Friday. As mentioned above, patchy to areas of blowing snow
will be possible where blowable snow exists, which based off snow
depth and the previous clipper is across northern and eastern
portions of the CWA. As with the duration of peak winds, some
uncertainty still remains with the coverage and severity of
blowing snow with this clipper. Currently, the best chance of
potential blowing snow impacts appears to be across our eastern
counties during the day Friday, especially the James River Valley, but
higher confidence in potential impacts is needed for the issuance
of any headlines.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)

A very cold night, at least for March standards, will kick off
the beginning of the long term period, with a widespread Wind
Chill Advisory looking likely as arctic air and high pressure
builds into the region. The cold air will not stick around for
long, however, as upper level ridging quickly builds in from the
west on Saturday, warming temperatures up to as high as the low
50s southwest to 30s north and east. Slightly cooler, yet still
seasonable to above normal temperatures are expected on Sunday as
a quick-moving shortwave trof looks to approach from the west.
This shortwave is expected to bring a chance of rain and/or snow
to most of the area Sunday afternoon into the overnight. Heading
into the upcoming week and even beyond, temperatures look to
remain warm with Tuesday likely being the warmest day of the long
period when a few 60+F readings will be possible. With the warmer
temperatures will come a lack of precipitation though, with little
to no chances of precipitation beyond the Sunday system through
the middle of the week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)

VFR to start the 18Z TAF period, before a strong cold front sweeps
from northwest to southeast starting later this afternoon. This
front will turn winds to the northwest and bring gusts up to 40 kts.
Isolated snow showers will be possible as well, more likely across
far northern portions of the state. Any snow shower will likely
create brief periods of low visibility. Confidence of snow showers
impacting KXWA-KMOT is relatively low still, thus will keep mention
at VCSH for now, but this will require watching. Periods of MVFR
cigs along and behind front are possible as well. Front should reach
KXWA by 20Z, KMOT-KDIK around 21-23Z, and KBIS-KJMS around 23-01Z.

TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING...

A cold front will move from northwest to southeast across North
Dakota this afternoon and evening, producing gusty northwesterly
winds and isolated to scattered snow showers. The winds will also
create areas of blowing snow north and east of the Missouri River.
The cold front, snow, and blowing snow will impact northwest
North Dakota this afternoon, the north central in the early
evening, and then the James River Valley this evening through
Friday morning. Expect brief periods of poor visibility within
areas experiencing falling and blowing snow.
