Going forecast looks good, with a mix of lower clouds over north
central North Dakota, mid level over the James River Valley, and
higher clouds streaming through elsewhere. As mentioned before,
main concern continues to be tomorrow. A call to emergency
management over the southern James River Valley indicates that
with the expected wind gusts, blowing snow will be a great
possibility.

For mid-morning update main change was to increase cloud cover
over the northwest and central parts of the state as mid level
clouds continue to push east, but upper level clouds continue to
stream in behind. Otherwise, remainder of forecast looks good.
Main concerns at this point is looking at what tomorrow will
bring concerning the notable northwest wind, and how it will react
with the snow cover over north central North Dakota. Some has
crusted and/or settled some over parts of that area, but with the
anticipated wind think blowing snow may become a concern at this
point. Will continue to evaluate through the day.

Radar echoes continue to increase across portions of the central
but still have yet to see any evidence of precipitation making its
way to the surface. For this update, we did expand the slight
chance of snow mention a bit further south but uncertainty remains
high about whether any will make its way to the ground given the
dry subcloud layer. Otherwise, just blended in the latest
observations to the going forecast.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Early this morning, a weak wave continues to move from northwest
to southeast across the area, embedded within northwest flow
aloft.

A few radar echoes still may bring a few light snowflakes to the
north but a dry subcloud layer will keep surface precipitation
limited. Will keep the mention of patchy fog in the central for
the next hour or two but observations continue to suggest that
this threat is diminishing.

A broad western CONUS ridge will deamplify slightly today ahead
of another approaching wave. This will lead to broad warm air
advection across much of the west and central through the day.
Here, we will end up seeing widespread highs in the lower 30s to
lower 40s. A few mid 40s are even possible across the southwest.
Over the Turtle Mountains and down through the James River
Valley, expect temperatures to be a bit cooler (in the 20s) given
a fresher snowpack and clouds that will linger through the day.

The next Clipper and associated cold front will cross the state
from northwest to southeast overnight tonight, dipping lows into
the single digits above zero over the far north. Elsewhere expect
lows generally in the lower teens to lower 20s. We will also see
some light snow chances move in across the north central and
northeast, lasting through Tuesday morning. Expect only a trace
to a couple tenths of an inch in accumulation at most.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Behind the cold front, it will become very windy late morning and
through the afternoon on Tuesday. The post frontal environment
will be characterized by strong pressure rises and cold air
advection. Pockets of steep low level lapse rates will also be
found. NAM forecast soundings suggest that widespread winds of 45
to 55 mph will be available to mix down at the top of the mixed
layer. This could also mean some blowing snow concerns,
especially north and east where there is some fresher snowpack.
Further south and west, most areas will be be too crusted over for
blowable snow. Will hold off on any wind headlines for the moment,
but they will likely be needed in future shifts.

Winds will slowly start to diminish Tuesday night, but the next
shot of arctic air comes flooding down from the north. Dangerous
to life threatening wind chills will once again be possible
Tuesday night through Thursday. The coldest period looks to be
Wednesday night through Thursday morning when we will see actual
lows flirt with 30 below zero across the north central and
widespread lows in the mid teens to mid 20s below elsewhere. Wind
chills could dip as low as 45 below.

A warming trend starts on Thursday, but remains primarily over
southwestern areas. A notable increase in temperatures will show
up for Friday as chances for snow increase again as well. High
temperatures then trend slightly cooler through the weekend, but
quite a bit of spread remains in the ensemble guidance for this
time period.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)

Low stratus continues to push into north central North Dakota
early this afternoon, with MVFR conditions affecting KMOT. Expect
ceilings to continue lowering over this area through the day into
tonight, possibly reaching IFR levels, spreading into the James
River Valley affecting KJMS. Some fog may also develop restricting
visibility.

Late tonight/very early Tuesday a strong cold front enters the
area, with winds turning west then northwest and increasing. Gusts
to 40kts are expected by mid-day over parts of the area. This may
lead to blowing snow over parts of north central North Dakota
into the James River Valley. Ahead of the front, low level wind
shear will affect most TAF sites.

...VERY WINDY TUESDAY WITH AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW...

Northwest winds will be on the increase Tuesday morning in the
wake of a strong cold front, with gusts to 50 mph possible by late
morning into the afternoon. Although some of the recent snowfall
has settled or crusted over, enough loose snow may be available
for areas of blowing and drifting snow to develop reducing
visibility. Those with travel or outdoor plans on Tuesday should
be prepared for the very windy conditions and potential blowing
snow.

In addition, very cold air will move into the area with this
system. This will lead to dangerously low wind chills developing
late Tuesday, which will remain over the area through Thursday
morning. Monitor the latest forecast for updates.
