&&

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)
Issued at 328 PM CDT Tue Jun 14 2022

A Wind Advisory is in effect on Wednesday for the west and much of
central North Dakota for wind gusts up to 55 mph. Showers
Wednesday afternoon may bring even stronger wind gusts.

A closed upper level low continues to rotate over northern
Montana and southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, while a vort max
evident on water vapor imagery was ejecting over the western
Dakotas this afternoon. At the surface, a front was pushing out of
the eastern Dakotas while the pressure gradient tightened over
western and central North Dakota. As the upper level vort max
rotated over the state, cold air aloft has allowed for weak
instability to develop, which will allow for the possibility of isolated
to scattered showers and non-severe thunderstorms this afternoon.

After sunset, convective coverage will diminish rapidly and then
the upper level low will transition east over North Dakota. Strong
low level flow will arrive from the west through Wednesday with a
50-60 kt 850mb jet. The question for surface winds Wednesday will
be the momentum transfer potential, as there are multiple
mitigating factors possibly keeping higher end winds above the
surface. First, the majority of the day looks to be in the warm
air advection regime of the trough, lacking the low level
subsidence necessary for prime momentum transfer. Additionally,
the suite of deterministic guidances still display some
discrepancies in the arrival timing of the 850 mb jet, likely
differing in how to resolve the eastward progression of a closed
upper level low. However with the combination of the tightening
pressure gradient and potential for mid-day showers to aid in
momentum transfer, there is enough evidence to issue a Wind
Advisory with stronger wording with the potential but uncertainty
for high wind gusts. This will need to be monitored for the
potential upgrade to a warning if better ingredient overlap
materializes. At this time the advisory doesn't cover the far
eastern tier of BIS counties, but this may need to be expanded
east if the momentum transfer looks adequate to counteract the
effects of boundary layer decoupling Wednesday evening.

Other than wind, the aforementioned showers will likely develop
through the day as cold air aloft and cyclonic flow produce
sufficient instability, especially over the northern half of the
state. Cooler temperatures continue with forecast highs in the 60s
to low 70s.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 328 PM CDT Tue Jun 14 2022

Hot temperatures this weekend highlight the long term forecast
period.

The upper level low will move towards the Hudson Bay through
Thursday, but with the slow exit speed and gradually weakening
pressure gradient, conditions will remain breezy on Thursday but
diminish from west to east. The remainder of the week contains a
dry forecast as a strong upper level ridge builds over the
Northern Plains, additionally bringing by far the hottest
temperatures of the year this weekend. Highs well into the 90s are
expected Saturday and Sunday and the poleward flux of low level
moisture will bring the potential for Heat Advisory criteria
apparent temperatures in the James River Valley. Forecast
precipitation chances return Sunday as the ridge axis shifts east.
Though the blend of guidance currently keeps the forecast dry
Saturday, convection associated with a low level jet over the
plains can't be ruled out.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Wednesday night)
Issued at 1243 AM CDT Wed Jun 15 2022

Strong winds highlight the 06Z Aviation forecast. MVFR cigs and
vsbys expected this afternoon and evening in showers.

VFR conditions to begin the 06Z TAF period. expect southwest to
west winds to increase around 12UTC at KDIK and KXWA and closer to
18 UTC at KMOT and KBIS. Widespread MVFR cigs and vsbys develop
this afternoon at KXWA and KMOT with only scattered MVFR cigs at
KDIK and KBIS late afternoon and evening. Winds will gradually
subside from west to east after 00 UTC, but KJMS will likely see
strongest winds 00-06 UTC. Maximum winds expected to be from the
west around 50 kts at KDIK and KXWA, with slightly lower gusts at
KBIS and KMOT. Max gusts to around 40-45 kts at KJMS this evening.
Locally higher gusts possible late afternoon to early evening.
