Issued at 725 PM CDT Mon Apr 4 2022

The near-term forecast remains in good shape. A few light rain
showers are beginning to develop from near Tioga to Watford City.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 319 CDT Mon Apr 4 2022

The short term forecast is highlighted by strong winds and the
chance for rain and possibly snow.

This afternoon, the synoptic pattern was characterized by zonal flow
across the Northern Plains, with a compact closed low upstream off
the coast of British Columbia. At the surface, broad high pressure
was centered over eastern South Dakota and Nebraska, with a modest
pressure gradient between the high and a surface trough over western
Montana. This pressure gradient, along with daytime mixing, is
leading to breezy southerly winds across the forecast area, warming
temperatures into the 40s east and 50s west.

As the surface trough becomes a more distinguished surface low and
drifts east this evening, the chance for precipitation will start in
western North Dakota and expand through the forecast area overnight.
Precipitation is expected to stay primarily rain, except for in the
north central where there could be a rain-snow mix or a transition
to all snow in the early morning hours. Overall, QPF amounts with
this initial round of precipitation is expected to be light overall,
generally under 0.10".

For most locations, there will be a lull in precipitation during the
day Tuesday. The aforementioned closed low is expected to quickly
eject off the Canadian Rockies and drop southeast through the
region. At the same time, a surface low that is forecast to be
almost stacked with the upper low will move out of southern
Saskatchewan and into western North Dakota, eventually merging with
the initial surface low as the whole system moves into the eastern
Dakotas and Minnesota. The question then becomes how much will
precpitation linger in our eastern counties during the day Tuesday
with the exit of the initial low, and whether it will be rain or
snow, before higher chances for precipitation begin Tuesday evening
from the second low and attendant cold front.

With the initial surface low, winds will transition to northwesterly
overnight tonight and through Tuesday morning, becoming strong due
to pressure rises and cold air advection with the low. The High Wind
Watch is still in effect for southwest North Dakota Tuesday morning
through late evening, and we did go ahead and add in Grant and Sioux
Counties with this forecast update. Additional wind headlines
will be needed for the remainder of the area.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)
Issued at 319 PM CDT Mon Apr 4 2022

Strong winds and widespread rain and snow on Wednesday highlight the
extended forecast, before we see warmer and drier conditions for the
end of the week.

The surface and upper low will become stacked and deepen Tuesday
night through Wednesday morning, wrapping up over northern
Minnesota. Winds are expected to be strongest on Wednesday from the
tight pressure gradient, with sustained northwest winds of 30 to 40
mph for much of the south and central. Coupled with these strong
winds will be widespread rain and snow coming from both the cold
front and wrap-around precipitation on the northwest side of the
stacked low. The main source of uncertainty is in the transition
between precipitation types Tuesday night through Wednesday. The
current forecast has rain transitioning to snow from northwest to
southeast through the night Tuesday, before eventually switching
back to rain Wednesday afternoon as temperatures warm into the lower
40s. However, there is uncertainty on when/if all locations will
switch back to rain or if precipitation will stay snow, as diabatic
cooling could keep temperatures cooler than guidance suggests. We
will have to keep an eye on this, as that could lead to higher snow
amounts, especially in the Turtle Mountains through the James River
Valley.

Current forecast has a general 1 to 3 inches in the James River
Valley and the southwest, with lesser amounts in a northwest-
southeast swath following the Missouri River. Any shift west in the
center of the low or the low slowing down could bring higher QPF
amounts to our far eastern tier of counties, with forecast QPF
amounts of 0.75"-1.00" to our east in the Red River Valley area.
However, ensemble guidance has been relatively consistent in
highlighting the north central and southwest as having the highest
probabilities of 24-hour QPF greater than 0.1", and although those
probabilities drop off quickly when increasing the amount to 0.5",
there is still a 10-20% chance of 24-hour QPF of at least 0.5" in
the Turtle Mountains area.

Precipitation will likely linger in the James River Valley on
Thursday morning as the low spins off over the Great Lakes region,
with another day of strong northwest winds before the surface
pressure gradient finally relaxes. In response to the closed low and
deep trough, upstream ridging will begin to build over the western
CONUS toward the end of the week. As this upper ridge slowly drifts
east, expect a warmup and drier conditions for the end of the week,
with highs starting in the upper 30s to lower 40s on Thursday, and
peaking on Saturday in the mid 50s to mid 60s.

WPC cluster analysis shows ensembles are in relatively good
agreement on the general upper air pattern to start next week, with
the upper ridge flattening as a trough moves down from across the
Pacific Northwest. The latest NBM advertises a cooling trend for
much of next week starting Sunday with low chance, widespread PoPs
Sunday and Monday. It does appear the cooler and active pattern will
be continuing, with CIPS extended analogs favoring above average
precipitation for much of next week, and CPC highlighting a moderate
chance for much below normal temperatures across the western half of
the state April 12-14.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening)
Issued at 725 PM CDT Mon Apr 4 2022

VFR conditions are expected through tonight. A strong low pressure
system will begin to impact the region this evening. Chances for
light rain exist at most terminals tonight through Tuesday
afternoon, but prevailing visibility restrictions appear unlikely
at this time. It is possible some snow could mix with the rain at
KMOT early Tuesday morning, and at KDIK late Tuesday afternoon.
Overall confidence on precipitation is not high enough for
anything beyond a VCSH mention at this time. Strong southeast
winds will weaken, shift to the west-northwest, and reintensify
this evening through Tuesday morning. Strong west-northwest winds
are expected Tuesday afternoon, with sustained speeds around 20-30
kts and gusts as high as 40 kts. The threat of low level wind
shear at KBIS late tonight into Tuesday morning appears to have
diminished from the previous forecast, and therefore was not
included in this TAF.
