Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 1135 PM CST Sun Jan 30 2022 .UPDATE... Issued at 1014 PM CST Sun Jan 30 2022 Only minor updates needed this evening. High clouds continue to stream into the area, thus made more adjustments to these clouds through the night. Sites in the northeast are getting close to saturation, although high clouds may still limit the fog potential. Regardless have added in some patchy fog through the night to cover any isolated areas of fog. Looking ahead to Monday and Monday evening, warm air aloft ahead of a passing clipper system could bring some pockets of freezing rain as precipitation starts Monday morning. Monday afternoon then sees a mix of rain and snow as the disturbance gets more organized and cooler aloft. As the front moves through Monday evening, some models indicating a drop in ice aloft could bring a quick round of freezing rain/drizzle to the north and east. Confidence in any freezing rain scenario is only low to moderate at this point. Have added some slight to chance mentions of freezing rain to account for these two potential scenarios. The threat for strong winds on Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning also remains on track. UPDATE Issued at 614 PM CST Sun Jan 30 2022 Minimal updates needed this evening. Mainly minor updates for sky cover as abundant high clouds continue to filter into the area. These will likely stick around through tonight, before lower clouds ahead of a clipper system develop across the area Monday. Overall expect partly to mostly cloudy skies to continue tonight through Monday. NBM indicating patchy fog is possible tonight across the northeast as a southerly flow increases dewpoints to this area. Confidence was not high enough to include at this time as high clouds may be enough to hold off this threat, although will continue to monitor. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) Issued at 254 PM CST Sun Jan 30 2022 Seasonably mild temperatures west today and statewide on Monday are expected, before a strong cold front arrives Monday night. Breezy to windy conditions on Monday with a chance of light rain or snow are forecast, with strong winds behind the cold front. Upper level features this afternoon include a ridge over the Northern Rockies with eastern CONUS troughing. This ridge will move east across the Northern Plains through Monday as a potent shortwave trough and height falls develop over the region. Mild temperatures are expected to develop ahead of the upcoming cold front through much of Monday, with this afternoon's highs in the upper 40s in the southwest. Monday morning lows will range from around 10 above zero in the eastern portions of the state to the mid 20s southwest. As the upper level trough approaches Monday, a surface low will deepen and an initial front will begin to cross the west in the afternoon. Light rain or snow will be possible along this initial front, however some brief isolated light freezing rain can't be ruled out as the pre-frontal thermal nose erodes. It's uncertain whether there is sufficient mid-level saturation for precipitation while the warm nose is in place, and the RAP/HRRR remains the most aggressive with this potential. With the brief window and lower end predictability we will allow the future shifts to track this potential and message primarily rain or snow with the initial front for now. Highs Monday should be seasonably warm with 30s to mid 40s in the forecast. Something to watch regarding Monday's highs will be how warm the north central can get, currently forecast in the low to mid 30s. This will impact the blowing snow potential if temperatures do warm above freezing. Additionally, any rain that does fall may also inhibit the initial lofting potential of the current snowpack. .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday) Issued at 254 PM CST Sun Jan 30 2022 Strong winds with chances for falling and blowing snow Monday night and Tuesday highlight the long term forecast period. Monday evening, the surface low will cross the state and feature a potent cold front with strong unidirectional flow through the lower levels and very strong pressure rises at the surface. While the overnight timing of this cold front may typically diminish boundary layer mixing and momentum transfer potential, the strength of the cold air advection shows up well in forecast soundings where boundary layer mixing persists through the night. Forecast soundings across the suite of guidance show almost 50 kts at the top of the boundary layer, with a strong enough pressure gradient to produce at least 30 mph sustained winds overnight even if the wind gust potential isn't quite tapped into at times. There continues to be some difference in the north-south location of the surface low, with the NAM/RAP producing the north solutions and the ECMWF/GFS/Canadian solutions further south. This does produce differences in the isallobaric component with the northern solutions producing somewhat weaker pressure rises over southern North Dakota, but CAA and the strength of the lower level flow is adequate to still expect very windy conditions overnight. Snow and blowing snow will also be concern, especially north central where some accumulating snow is more likely and there is more potential for an non crusted antecedent snowpack. The high- end potential and coverage of blowing snow hazards however remain highly uncertain, with new snowfall totals looking fairly light (up to around 1 inch over the north) and the warmer temperatures expected on Monday which may impact the current snowpack. The most likely combination required for more widespread blowing snow issues should be the overlap of strong winds and falling snow. Even with lower snowfall rates, the Blowing Snow Model shows large increases in visibility impacts as hypothetical wind speeds go from 28 kts to above 30 kts. As more high-resolution guidance comes in, there will need to be a decision made about the potential overlap of these conditions and whether or not a winter headline is required. All things considered, predictability for western and central North Dakota with this shift was highest regarding wind and less so regarding blowing snow impacts. A High Wind Watch was issued, with the mention of blowing snow potential, based on this predictability level. Following this system, Arctic air will settle in and produce very cold wind chills. Guidance is consistent with Thursday morning being the coldest period with the strong surface high moving into the eastern Dakotas through this period. Wind Chill headlines will be needed by Tuesday evening, if not during the daytime over the initially coldest areas of the far north. Ridging develops again late in the week, moderating temperatures (especially southwest). && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1133 PM CST Sun Jan 30 2022 High clouds and VFR conditions tonight will give way MVFR to brief IFR conditions on Monday as chances for snow return along with strong winds. Overall look for high clouds, light westerly winds, and VFR conditions tonight into Monday morning. A clipper system then develops lower clouds on Monday, along with gusty westerly winds, and chances for rain and snow. Lower ceilings and any rain or snow showers could bring MVFR to perhaps brief IFR conditions Monday. Confidence in shower activity is only high enough to place mostly VCSH through the day Monday. Strong winds along with areas of snow and blowing snow could then continue the threat for MVFR to IFR conditions Monday night. Placed prevailing light snow for sites with the greatest chance of these conditions Monday night. In addition, some pockets of freezing rain are possible Monday through Monday night.
