Issued at 950 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022 Conditions continue to deteriorate across the James River Valley as winds pick up blowing snow around. Near blizzard conditions are possible across the James River Valley into central North Dakota today due to blowing snow. New snow continues to move in from the east bring more accumulations to central and eastern part of the state. A snow band has set up over Williston bringing snow to western North Dakota. Another snow band is set to move through the Bismarck area the next hour. Travel could be difficult to impossible in some areas. Adjusted PoPs to match current conditions. UPDATE Issued at 641 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022 This morning, the center of the closed low aloft is over western Iowa, while the surface low is analyzed in far southeast Minnesota. As the surface pressure gradient tightens and low-level flow increases on the northwest side of the low, northwest winds will strengthen through the day, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible in the James River Valley. Not much change in our thinking for today's forecast. The latest CAMs runs have sped up the timing of today's wave just a touch, so freshened up our PoPs with the latest blended guidance. The outer edge of that precipitation shield is about to cross into eastern North Dakota, but with the heaviest radar returns still back further into Minnesota. Across our area, light snow has persisted through the morning across western North Dakota and a few spots in central North Dakota, with some blowing snow across the entire area from northwest winds gusting to 35 mph. A lull overall, but conditions will be worsening later on today for central ND and the James River Valley. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 339 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022 The winter storm continues today, with near blizzard conditions possible today and tonight across parts of the south central into the James River Valley. The strong upper low that has been bringing snow and wind to the region is located over the intersection of South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska, and has become displaced from its attendant surface low since the surface low has occluded. Bands of snow continue to rotate around the low, with light snow ongoing across western North Dakota early this morning, with a gap across much of central ND before the next band that is expanding across the James River Valley. Looking to our east on radar is a more widespread area of snow in northern and central Minnesota that will be pushing west through the morning hours before moving into central North Dakota late this morning into the early afternoon. This swath of snow, associated with a modest deformation zone, warm air advection, and strong low- level winds, is our main forecast focus today. This should be the last push of moderate to heavy snow with this system, but we are also finally getting the strong winds that we're accustomed to seeing with these storms. Northwest winds will be strongest across the James River Valley, with sustained winds at 30 to 35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph possible. With falling snow expected by early afternoon, significantly reduced visibilities are likely from falling and blowing snow. Near blizzard conditions are possible where the areas of heavy snow and strong winds overlap, especially out in open country. The most likely location for this is in an area from Wing, to Carrington, to Edgeley, to Napoleon. However, strong winds and falling snow extend outside of this area, so any location across the south central and into the James River Valley could see near blizzard conditions for at least a short period. The 00Z HREF run paints intermittent 20 to 30 percent probabilities for blizzard conditions as far north as McLean County and as far west as Morton and Oliver Counties. Throughout the day we will be monitoring visibilities to see if an upgrade to the current warning is warranted. The latest update of additional snowfall between now and 12 UTC Friday has a general 5 to 8 inches from Harvey through the James River Valley, and 2 to 4 inches through much of the rest of central ND. However, with significant blowing and drifting expected with this additional snowfall, it could be hard to get an accurate picture of how much new snow has fallen by tomorrow morning. We decided to issue a Winter Weather Advisory through 12 UTC Friday for our western two tiers of counties today to account for additional light snow, as well as blowing and drifting snow with the increased winds today. The ongoing Winter Storm Warning across the rest of the forecast area also goes until 12 UTC Friday. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 339 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022 The main forecast concern in the extended period is very cold air temperatures next week with dangerously cold wind chills. On Friday, snow will likely linger through much of the day, especially central, before the upper low finally begins pushing out to over Wisconsin and beyond. Northwest winds will be sustained at 25 to 30 mph so blowing and drifting snow will be a continued problem. Will have to consider if an advisory will be needed through the day on Friday to account for blowing/drifting snow and light falling snow, but will let future shifts decide this. Air temperatures will be in the teens, with the strong winds leading to winds chills as cold as 10 degrees below zero during the day. A progressive, shallow shortwave moves through northwest flow aloft on Saturday, bringing a chance of light snow to the northwest and north central Saturday night into Sunday morning. Accumulations with this wave will be light, generally half an inch and under. The focus for next week is the very cold air temperatures and dangerously cold wind chills. As weakly northwest flow aloft dominates, Arctic air will continue filtering into the region, dropping temperatures up to 25 degrees below normal. Single digits highs are likely on Sunday, with widespread subzero highs expected on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday will be similar although maybe a few degrees warmer, before highs on Thursday are expected to be even colder. Wind chills will be dangerously cold, with multiple nights of wind chills dropping to 30 degrees below zero, if not colder. Ensemble guidance is beginning to advertise a clipper system moving through midweek next week, which could bring widespread light snow to the forecast area. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Friday Morning) Issued at 641 AM CST Thu Dec 15 2022 A major winter storm continues to impact all of western and central North Dakota through the 06z TAF period and beyond. Areas of light to moderate snow will continue across all of western and central North Dakota through the period. The heaviest snowfall rates will generally be across the western third of the state and another area over the James River Valley. Winds will be on the increase into this afternoon with gusts up to 50 mph possible and widespread blowing snow. Areas along and east of Highway 83 and south of highway 2 will see the greatest impacts, including the terminals of KBIS, KJMS, and possibly KMOT.
