Still expect a mix of rain (possibly freezing in the north), thunderstorms (south), and snow (north) this evening through tonight. Low level stratus continues breaking apart over north central parts of the state. However, overcast upper mid to high clouds continue streaming into southwestern North Dakota and expanding across the area. UPDATE Issued at 904 AM CDT Thu Apr 21 2022 Main update was the reduction of sky cover through early afternoon. As high pressure passes through the state this morning, expect low level stratus to continue falling apart through the early afternoon. Simultaneously, upper mid to high clouds will stream in from the west. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 544 AM CDT Thu Apr 21 2022 The main concern for the short term period is chances for mixed precipitation across northwest and north central North Dakota tonight. A few thunderstorms are also possible across southwest and south central North Dakota tonight, but severe weather is not expected. Low stratus associated with a departing low pressure system remains much more widespread this morning than guidance suggested. Recent iterations of the RAP seem to have caught on to this trend, at least to some extent, and project the stratus to slowly erode by early afternoon. Otherwise, looking at a fairly quiet day with deep layer ridging passing through the region. Southeasterly surface winds will begin to increase over southwest North Dakota this afternoon following the departure of the surface ridge. If the current cloud cover does dissipate in time for peak heating, the current high temperature forecast of 30s and 40s might be too low, as was seen yesterday. However, diurnal heating could also be tempered by increasing mid to high clouds. Strong synoptic and mesoscale forcing in response to a deepening longwave trough over the western CONUS will commence over the region this evening into tonight. Guidance continues to depict several bands or waves of precipitation developing over western and central North Dakota this evening into tonight, propagating northeastward through Friday morning. The thermal profile across southwest and south central North Dakota will be warm enough to support all rain as a precipitation type, and these areas could actually see a few thunderstorms as the strong warm air and moisture advection yield a few hundred J/kg of elevated CAPE in the presence of very steep mid level lapse rates. Farther north, the main concern will be precipitation types. All types are possible, but deterministic output and NBM probabilities suggest snow and freezing rain will be the dominant types. Ice accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch and snow accumulations from a dusting to an inch or 2 are possible. At this time, only minor impacts are expected as surface temperatures are forecast to remain very close to freezing and should begin rising shortly after sunrise Friday morning. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 544 AM CDT Thu Apr 21 2022 A strong low pressure system remains on track to impact the region Friday through Sunday. No major shifts in 00 UTC global ensemble data were noted. Some minor adjustments with this forecast package include a slight increase in QPF, a greater risk of freezing rain for some areas, and an increased probability in strong to severe thunderstorms from south central North Dakota into the James River Valley late Friday afternoon through Friday night. After the initial bands of mixed precipitation depart northern North Dakota Friday morning, most of what falls for the remainder of the day will likely be more in the form of drizzle. The highly saturated low level air mass could also produce areas of dense fog. Widespread heavier precipitation is forecast to develop Friday evening as the center of the low approaches from the south. There are two main concerns for the Friday evening through Friday night time period. The first is the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms across south central North Dakota into the James River Valley. An elevated mixed layer is forecast to yield CAPE at least as high as 1000 J/kg with only marginal CIN on the periphery of 2-7 km bulk shear increasing from 30 to 60 kts. South central North Dakota appears to have the greatest potential for CAPE/shear overlap, and this is also where some CAMs are beginning to paint UH tracks. Due to a highly stable boundary layer residing underneath the EML, large hail is the main expected hazard. Periods of heavy rain falling on top of melting snow could also cause some minor water issues. The other concern for Friday evening and overnight is precipitation types. The bottom line up front is that recent guidance is trending up in freezing rain probabilities due to warmer temperatures aloft over near to sub-freezing surface temperatures across higher terrain areas in Dunn, Mountrail, Burke, Ward, and Renville Counties. Surface air and ground temperatures will be very sensitive to the icing potential, which is the reason why higher elevations carry a higher probability of significant ice accumulations. There is enough confidence in this trend to increase our messaging on the freezing rain potential. While great uncertainty remains in specific ice accumulations, a localized, short-duration ice storm now appears to be a reasonable high-end outcome. The rain/snow line, with a mixed type transition zone in between, is forecast to enter far western North Dakota late Friday night and slowly progress eastward through the day Saturday, reaching Minot during the afternoon and Bismarck by early evening. The greatest threat of freezing rain on Saturday is forecast to shift over the Turtle Mountains, where surface air temperatures could be near to slightly below freezing. While warmer ground temperatures during the day could mitigate this threat, the risk of accumulating ice is great enough to add Rolette County to the Winter Storm Watch. The deformation zone will begin to lift north and east Saturday evening through Sunday morning, changing precipitation over to snow and bringing lighter accumulations to central parts of the state. The ECMWF ensemble remains clustered slightly to the west of the GEFS. This difference is reflected to a minor degree in snow threshold probabilities, more notably across northern North Dakota than southwest. The ECMWF ensemble has also shown a distinct increase in both QPF and snow probabilities, and is now closer in line with the GEFS. Our deterministic "most likely" snowfall forecast for a wide swath of 6 to 12 inches matches well with the WPC derived 50th percentile snowfall forecast, and most areas generally along and west of a line from the southwest corner of the state to Renville County maintain a 50 to 70 percent chance of at least 12 inches. The current deterministic and probabilistic snowfall forecast also prompted Hettinger County to be added to the watch. Strong winds are expected with this system, especially within the deformation heavy snow band. While snow on the ground is not likely to be efficiently blown around, the strong winds combined with the heavy snow could worsen an already potentially dangerous travel situation. At least near whiteout conditions appear possible, if not likely where heavy snow occurs. Furthermore, if significant ice accumulations do end up occurring, stronger winds in these areas could greatly increase the level of impacts, which would already be quite high It is worth emphasizing again though that confidence in freezing rain is not nearly as high as it is in snow. In summary, numerous hazards will bring high-impact weather to western and central North Dakota this weekend. Confidence on winter weather impacts across western and north central North Dakota is high, with lower certainty in the severity of specific hazards. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon) Issued at 1241 PM CDT Thu Apr 21 2022 MVFR/IFR ceilings are expected at all sites through much of the TAF period.
