Issued at 1217 AM CST Tue Feb 22 2022

We allowed the Winter Weather Advisory to expire at midnight as
planned, and those 3 counties (Sheridan/Wells/Foster) are now in
the Wind Chill Warning that is valid until noon Wednesday. Light
snow continues across most of the area in the Winter Storm
Warning, with winds still gusting at 30 to 40 mph in the James
River Valley. Not planning on making any changes to headlines
overnight, with bitterly cold temperatures and wind chills
continuing through the night.

UPDATE Issued at 955 PM CST Mon Feb 21 2022

No changes to headlines with this product issuance. Winds still
gusting 35-40 mph within the winter storm warning, and upwards to
30 mph within the winter weather adv area. With the amount of snow
blowing in Bismarck with gusts to 20 mph at times the last few
hours, would anticipate much worse conditions in open country
within the headlined area. Do think we will be able to let the
winter weather advisory go at midnight for Sheridan, Wells, and
Foster counties, replaced with a wind chill warning (likely), as
winds taper off across the northern James Valley. Additional
headlines changes are possible.

Did increase POPs this evening/early Tue morning as another area
of light snow expands northeast across the south central and James
Valley area. High pressure working in from the north should advect
enough dry air to keep most of the snow confined to southern areas
overnight.

UPDATE Issued at 612 PM CST Mon Feb 21 2022

Will allow the winter storm warning and advisory south and west of
the Missouri River to expire on time. Winds have tapered off for
this area, with area web cams and sfc observations showing
improved visibility. Wind chill headlines will replace. Will
maintain the wind chill warning as is north, and the winter storm
warnings and and winter weather advisories south central and
southeast with gusty winds persisting, creating reduced visibility
and dangerous travel. Overall the forecast remains in great shape
with only some minor edits.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 310 PM CST Mon Feb 21 2022

A winter storm will continue to impact southern North Dakota through
Tuesday, with dangerously cold wind chills statewide.

Light snow continues to fall across southern two thirds of the state
this afternoon. As of 230 PM CST, visibility was showing signs of
improvement in far western North Dakota. The general expectation is
for falling snow to gradually end from west to east across the
western half of the state through the afternoon. Meanwhile, light to
moderate snow continues to fall from near Lake Oahe through the
southern James River Valley. While there could be some breaks,
lighter snow is now more or less likely to persist across these
areas all the way through Tuesday afternoon as mid level cyclonic
vorticity continues to stream over the area under the right entrance
region of an upper level jet. Global scale models also show
increasing Q-vector convergence across all of southern North Dakota
on Tuesday in response to a deepening mid level shortwave crossing
South Dakota. This could lead to another round of light snow north
and west of the aforementioned areas, but the continued intrusion of
dry Arctic air could limit this potential. Additional snow
accumulations from tonight through Tuesday may be as high as 2 to 4
inches in Dickey County, with decreasing amounts to the north and
west.

Visibility continues to be significantly reduced along and south of
I-94 and east of the Missouri River. There has been little change in
observations throughout the day, with widespread near blizzard
conditions and occasional whiteouts. Little change is expected in
the low level wind field tonight through Tuesday, with a persistent
northerly wind around 20 to 25 mph across south central and eastern
North Dakota.

The Winter Storm Warning was extended in time through Tuesday
afternoon for Logan, McIntosh, LaMoure, and Dickey Counties as both
falling and blowing snow are expected to persist. The Winter Weather
Advisory for Sheridan, Wells, and Foster Counties has been extended
until midnight, with blowing snow being the main hazard. Burleigh,
Emmons, Kidder, and Stutsman Counties will see their Winter Storm
Warning continue as planned. All other portions of the Winter Storm
Warning and Winter Weather Advisory are planned to expire at 6 PM
CST, at which time wind chill headlines will begin (Warning for
McLean County, Advisory elsewhere).

Temperatures are likely to fall into the teens below zero tonight,
with 20s below possible in the far north if cloud cover diminishes.
Another day of highs in the single digits below zero is on tap for
Tuesday. Wind chills are forecast to fall into the 40s below across
most of northern and central North Dakota tonight through Tuesday
morning, with mainly 30s below south and west of the Missouri
River.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

The threat of dangerous wind chills will continue through at least
Friday morning.

The center of the Arctic high pressure is forecast to drift from
southern Saskatchewan into the Dakotas Tuesday night through
Wednesday. NAEFS and ECMWF ensemble both support MSLP in the 99.5
climatological percentile, which may end up as high as 1050 mb! The
GFS suggests some high clouds may still be present over the region
Tuesday night, but any location that sees clearing skies and light
winds could have overnight temperatures fall into the 20s below, if
not 30s below zero. Northwest and far north central North Dakota are
the most likely areas to experience extremely cold air temperatures.
This will likely be the coldest night of this Arctic outbreak, with
widespread wind chills in the 30s and 40s below, possibly falling
colder than minus 50. Temperatures are only expected to warm to
around zero on both Wednesday and Thursday, but lighter winds will
give a brief reprieve to dangerous wind chills during the afternoon
hours. Otherwise, the wind chill threat will resume during the
overnight and morning hours.

A Pacific warm front is forecast finally start scouring out the
Arctic air on Friday. The strength of the low level inversion may
inhibit strong heating though, and this is reflected in a larger
spread in NBM temperature guidance for Friday. There is higher
confidence in warmer temperatures for Saturday prior to the arrival
of yet another Arctic cold front. This next shot of Arctic air could
be shorter-lived, as long range ensemble temperature anomalies show
a warming trend heading into March. No mentionable chances for
precipitation are in the forecast for the long term period.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)

Light snow will continue falling across south central and
southeastern North Dakota through early Tuesday morning, possibly
lingering at KJMS into early Tuesday afternoon. LIFR/IFR visibility
will likely prevail at KJMS with BLSN through the overnight with
winds gusting still to around 30 kts.  Some improvements to MVFR
possible later tonight, but may dip again during the day Tuesday as
winds ramp back up a bit.

At KBIS and KDIK, conditions have improved, with prevailing MVFR
ceilings expected at these two terminals, along with some VFR breaks
overnight, then VFR after 12Z. VFR conditions are likely to prevail
at KXWA and KMOT through the 06Z period. North to northeast winds
will remain sustained around 10-20 kts through Tue afternoon south
central and east, with lighter winds west and for all terminals by
Tuesday evening.
