Quick update to convert the wind advisory to a winter weather
advisory and add the rest of western North Dakota to the winter
weather advisory mainly due to blowing snow. Multiple sites have
fallen to a half mile visibility or less across the west and this
should continue for the next few hours.

Widespread light snow has moved into much of the west and north
and will continue to spread across the state through the day. for
this update, just updated precipitation chances to better reflect
the radar and observational trends. Otherwise, just blended in the
latest observations to the going forecast.

Today's snow and gusty winds are approaching the state border in
western North Dakota, with snow reported as close as Wolf Point
and Glendive as of 12 UTC. Made a few small changes to PoPs with
this update to speed up timing of snow in southwest North Dakota,
in line with current radar and observed trends. Also extended the
time of patchy fog under the low stratus deck still placed over
much of northern and central North Dakota. Otherwise, no real
change in what we're expecting today, with snow and gusty winds
expected to quickly expand across the forecast area through the
morning and afternoon. A surge of cold air will move in behind the
cold front, with places in western North Dakota, especially the
southwest, seeing their high temperatures for today this morning.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Accumulating snow, gusty winds, and dangerously cold wind chills
highlights the short term forecast. A Winter Weather Advisory,
Wind Advisory, and Wind Chill Warning are all in effect for parts
of the forecast area over the course of today and tonight.

Early this morning, weak troughing was based over the Pacific
Northwest, with an upper low beginning to close off over southern
Alberta. At the surface, the center of a low was placed over
southeast Montana, with a cold front extending back off to the
west of the low. An expansive low stratus deck covers northern
parts of North Dakota, and will continue to expand south through
the night. Reduced visibilities from patchy fog, as well as
flurries, are possible under this stratus.

As both the upper low and surface low track southeast through the
day today, light snow will move into western North Dakota in the
morning, quickly pushing into the central by late morning, and east
by the afternoon. Snow amounts have increased some with this update
as more high-res guidance becomes available and QPF amounts look
slightly higher, mainly in the north central and into northeast
North Dakota. Areas south and west of the Missouri River, where
winds will be higher, is still expected to get an inch or less of
snow. From the northwest through the James River Valley, a general
1 to 2 inches, and then 2 to 4 inches from the north central
through Wells and Foster Counties. The Turtle Mountains was the
biggest area of change, with 3 to 5 inches of snow accumulations
expected.

A main concern with this system will be the potential for blowing
and drifting snow, as strong cold air advection and pressure
rises move in behind the cold front that will enter western North
Dakota this morning and move through the state through the morning
and afternoon. As the previous shift noted, the strongest 3- hour
pressure rises still look to be centered in South Dakota, so the
highest winds in our forecast area will be in the southwest and
south central. However, gusty winds can still be expected across
all of western and central North Dakota, due to the tight pressure
gradient between the surface low and cold high pressure quickly
building in behind the front. Expect gusts up to 50 mph in the
south, and 45 mph elsewhere.

For headlines - main update was to issue a Wind Chill Warning for
western and parts of south central North Dakota for tonight and
through Wednesday morning, with wind chills as low as 45 degrees
below zero. We did pull Grant and Sioux Counties out of the Winter
Weather Advisory and added them to the Wind Advisory, as snow
accumulations are light and similar to the counties already in the
Wind Advisory. A Wind Chill Advisory will be needed in the same
counties where we have the Winter Weather Advisory, but for now we
will include this in the WSW text instead of having a completely
separate hazard, for simplicity's sake. The Wind Advisory and
Winter Weather Advisory go into effect at 16 UTC.

Areas in western North Dakota will see their high temperatures in
the morning, before temperatures drop quickly behind the cold
front. Snow will end in the west by the late afternoon, but could
linger in eastern portions of the forecast area through the night
and into Wednesday morning. Overnight lows tonight will be
bitterly cold, from 20 below zero southwest to 10 below east.
Gusty winds continue overnight, especially in the James River
Valley.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

Dangerous cold to start out the extended period, before a mild
warmup for the weekend and into the start of next week.

Snow could linger in our far eastern counties in the morning on
Wednesday before a strong, cold high pressure fully settles in for
Wednesday and Thursday. Highs both these days are not expected to
reach above zero, with colder temperatures in the west on
Wednesday and in the east on Thursday. Wind Chill headlines will
be needed during this time, with wind chills as cold as 50 degrees
below zero Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and actual air
temperatures from 30 below to 20 below.

We finally break out of the below zero temperatures on Friday as
upper heights flatten and warmer air advects into the region,
bringing a chance for light snow on Friday night. Temperatures
through the rest of the weekend will fluctuate some but will still
be warmer than they have been recently, with signs of a stronger
warmup for the middle of next work week.

Widespread snow and blowing snow with gusty northwest winds will
continue through much of the day across all of western and central
North Dakota. Expect IFR/LIFR visibilities under areas of
falling/blowing snow, improving from west to east late in the
period. Gusts up to 50 mph will be possible through this
afternoon (strongest winds south), gradually diminishing tonight.
Areas across the west should see a return to VFR categories
towards the end of the period, but KBIS/KMOT/KJMS may hang on to
some MVFR ceilings.
