Key Messages:
- Winter Storm to impact the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes Region
Wednesday night into the first part of the weekend. Snow,
winds, blowing snow...potential whiteout/blizzard conditions
and dangerously cold wind chills can be expected.
Today into Wednesday...
Shortwave trough in the west to east zonal flow aloft exits the
region this morning. Snow associated with this shortwave has
moved rapidly east of the forecast area early this morning per
mosaic radar. Upper/surface ridge builds over the Upper Great
Lakes Region today into Wednesday. Much of the forecast area will
remain dry through Wednesday morning. Colder air mass advects in
behind shortwave trough today and highs are expected to be in the
single digits above to teens and lows tonight will fall into the
single digits to teens below zero. Lowest wind chills will be in
the teens below across much of the area Wednesday morning.
Wednesday night into Saturday morning
Focus turns to winter storm to impact the area Wednesday night into
Saturday morning. Upper level low/trough digs over the central
United States/Upper Great Lakes region. Decent forcing/vertical
motion in association with the upper level low will spread snow
across the forecast area Wednesday afternoon into Friday night. The
latest GFS/NAM bufkit soundings show decent deep dendritic snow
growth and higher snow ratios Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
This will allow for the heaviest snow to fall across the forecast
area. As surface low deepens over the Great Lakes Region and moves
east of the area late Thursday into Friday...lighter snow occurs
over much of the forecast area. The 20.00z GFS/NAM show gradient
tightening considerably Thursday into Friday night over the
region...as surface low deepens over the Great Lakes. The 20.00z
GFS/NAM suggest surface pressure gradient forcing increasing to
above 50 ubars/km by 12z Friday and Bufkit soundings indicate wind
gusts of 35 to 40 knots Thursday night into Friday night. This will
cause considerably blowing/drifting snow and the potential for
blizzard and whiteout conditions west of the Mississippi River and
in open areas.
The other factor with this system is the cold arctic airmass
advecting in Thursday into Friday across the area. Factor in the
strong winds and temps falling into the single digits above and
below zero...bitterly cold wind chills will occur across the area.
Wind chills are expected to be minus 20 to minus 40 Thursday night
into Friday.
Will continue to mention all these hazards in the Winter Storm
Watch...blowing/drifting snow with the potential of
blizzard/whiteout conditions and the dangerously cold wind
chills.
Sunday into Monday
Upper level trough remains over the northeastern United States
Sunday into Monday. The 20.00z GFS/ECMWF indicate a shortwave trough
embedded in the northerly flow aloft to track over the Upper Great
Lakes Region/Northern Plain States. This will provide another chance
for light snow across the forecast area...mainly Sunday night.
