.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Regional radar/obs show pockets of light snow across northern MN
into northern WI in association with a shortwave trough and weak
surface low early today. Model soundings keep the deeper
saturation across northern WI early this morning, and this will be
where light snow chances are highest through around sunrise.
Farther south and west, soundings are noticeably drier and lift is
fairly weak, so may not see much more than a few flurries in
these areas. Patchy fog is possible this morning with weak flow
ahead of a cold front that will shift winds to the north through
the day. However, it will be another mild day with highs in the
upper 20s and 30s. Lower clouds and maybe a few flurries should
slide south into the area during the day/evening behind the front
as low-level cold advection takes hold. The RAP suggests enough
low-level saturation/lift for patchy freezing drizzle across
central WI late today/this evening, but have not added any mention
at this point. Colder, drier air will filter into the area
tonight with low-level easterly flow on the southern periphery of
Canadian high pressure.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

The snow system for Friday/Friday night still remains on track to
impact at least portions of the Upper MS Valley with our area likely
to be right on the edge of the band. The very dry fetch of low-level
easterly flow could eat into amounts on the eastern periphery
setting up a sharp gradient, so it's a tough forecast. Meanwhile,
with the upper low and weak surface reflection diving south across
the northern plains, the strongest synoptic lift, thermal advection,
and seasonably rich moisture (+1 to 2+ NAEFS standard anomalies)
look to remain mostly to the west, possibly brushing far
southwestern counties. This is line with GEFS/EPS ensembles, which
continue to favor southwest MN into central/western IA, with our
southwestern counties potentially on the fringe of the heavier snow.
WPC superensemble plumes show significant spread in amounts
remaining, although the bulk of members along and east of the MS
River are quite low, and there's some clustering in the 3 to 8"
range to the west at Charles City, IA, which is around the 25th to
75th percentile range. The DGZ doesn't look to be very deep during
the bulk of the snowfall, with snow ratios likely close to local
climo, but a longer residence time within the band could help boost
snow totals. Easterly winds will also increase Friday
afternoon/evening with gusts to 30 mph, which could cause some
blowing/drifting in open areas. Opted to include a few counties
across northeast IA in a Winter Storm Watch with this area likely
to be closest to the heavy snow band, but subtle shifts in track
could noticeably impact amounts, so additional adjustments in
totals are likely.

Shortwave ridging/surface high pressure will build across the area
on Saturday with dry and seasonably cold weather. Another upper
level trough will likely cross the region Sunday/Sunday night. This
system won't have much moisture to work with, but could produce a
bit of light snow for some areas.

Otherwise, more of the same is expected into early next week with NW
flow persisting and occasional shortwave troughs which could bring
light snow to the region. Seasonable temps are favored into early
next week with signs of colder temps from mid-week and beyond.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)

As BR is slow to lift out this morning, VFR conditions expected at
both TAF sites for the next couple of hours. MVFR conditions
followed by IFR cigs at RST arrive near 13.20Z ahead of the next
system. MVFR cigs are currently in central Minnesota heading south,
with IFR cigs shortly behind them. LSE expected to remain MVFR
through the period as IFR cigs remain predominantly west of the
Mississippi, affecting RST for most of the evening. Light snow
also predominantly affects west of the Mississippi starting
tomorrow morning (~14.15Z), expect reduced visibilities at RST
during snowfall. Have included MVFR cigs & vis at RST for snowfall
onset, however subject to change with upcoming forecasts... based
on a tight snowfall track and a sharp gradient.
