Accumulating snow is still expected with generally 1 to 3 inches south of Highway 18 in Fayette, Clayton, and Grant counties. The snow amounts can easily vary by an inch or two should the snow take longer to reach the ground or if a band stays over an area longer than expected. The cold temperatures should make the snow fluffy and the brisk winds will make it more difficult to measure. The highest totals will be found for those farther south. The snow will spread in this afternoon and diminish this evening. Bitterly cold wind chills will overspread the area tonight with values in the -25 to -35 degree range by Sunday morning. Latest satellite and imagery shows the band of snow over Nebraska
and Iowa spreading northeast. Some steeper 2-6km lapse rates were
noted over southeast Nebraska and this was near the 700mb
circulation with warm advection in a band across southern Iowa and
a tight thermal gradient in this area with temperatures in the
dendritic growth zone. The morning model trends continue to take
the heavy snow across southern Iowa, a sharper no snow area and light
snow gradient. The SREF also decreased the depth of the DGZ over
our southern counties, but there still should be good lift to work
with.
The dry air to the north is delaying the onset of the snow,
however we will need to morning the snow to the northwest of the
700mb circulations as there is additional forcing due to the right
exit region of a second jet. Continue to maintain a winter
weather advisory for 1 to 3 inches across Grant and Clayton
counties with up to and inch farther north between the no snow-
light snow area.

Snow in our southern counties this afternoon and very cold wind
chills tonight highlight the short term forecast.
A band of snow near the Kansas/Missouri/Nebraska border will
strengthen and move northeast this morning. Aided by forcing from a
shortwave trough, a band of 600-700mb frontogenesis provides the
primary forcing for this system. While the main frontogenetical
band stays to the south of our forecast area, our southern
counties, especially Grant County, will receive 1-3 inches of
accumulating snow. Overnight the trend was a slight lowering of
the precipitation amounts which brought the snow totals down from
previous forecasts slightly. But, a deep dendritic growth zone at
times, sufficient saturation, and favorable upward vertical
motion make 1-3 fluffy inches of snow likely in these locations.
RAP soundings show gusty winds around 20-25 knots possible in
northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin, making blowing/drifting
snow a possible hazard with this system. Onset of accumulating
snowfall has been delayed from mid-morning to closer to noon and
will continue into the evening.
Tonight, northwesterly flow aloft ushers arctic air into the region
bringing low temperatures down into the -15 to -5 degree range. The
pressure gradient over the forecast area will gradually weaken into
tomorrow morning, but stronger winds overnight will help wind chills
reach -35 in southeast Minnesota and -25 to -15 elsewhere.
A wind chill advisory has been issued for most of the area.

After a quick shot of cold air, the pattern will bring warming
by Monday.
Tuesday through Friday...The week begins with warm
advection and a low amplitude ridge over the central U.S. This
gives way to more trough energy heading across the northern states
by mid-week with a strong cyclone in the Great Lakes region by
Tuesday night. While the heavier precipitation looks north of the
area, some very light snow will be possible as temperatures drop
in this northwest flow wave. Have added small snow chances for
this system mainly north of highway 10 in WI as the 31.12Z ECMWF
ensemble and 01.00Z GEFS members have ~50% precipitating lightly.
Following this cyclone, another cold shot of air moves in for late
week.
