Area forecast discussion, Jan 23, 11:25 PM CST, 3 hours 49 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service La Crosse WI 1125 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Monday) Issued at 145 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 Tonight's focus will be on the last round of snowfall to close out the weekend. The surface ridge currently in the area will move out to the east and quickly be replaced by a low pressure system that is currently over the Dakotas. That system will reach the area by this evening and bring light snowfall to the area. The initial snowfall's driver is isentropic upglide paired with a sufficient dendritic growth zone, as shown in model soundings. This snowband will move east across the area before another small band powered by 900-850 mb frontogenesis impacts the area early tomorrow morning Accumulations are expected to be about 1 to 2 inches. Lower snowfall amounts are forecast mainly due to a lack of available moisture to produce a heavier snowfall. Snow ratios are about 15-17:1 making for lighter, fluffier snow again. The system will be longer-lasting than the previous one, however, and stick around until tomorrow morning. Though snowfall amounts will be on the lower end, this could still impact the Monday morning commute with slippery roads. After this snow, the forecast looks to be dry until mid-week. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 145 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 TEMPS: cold air still on track to funnel southward from northern Canada, spilling across the Upper Mississippi River Valley for Tue/Wed. Consistent, persist signal in the models. Highs Tue could struggle to climb above zero for some locations while lows both mornings look to drop into the teens below zero...possibly chilling down -20 F for Wed morning. Cold weather headlines are likely both mornings with winds more of a factor Tue morning. Thu still holds the promise of shortwave ridging and a brief return to normal (or a tad above) temps. After that, How temps shake out as we move into and through the weekend continues to be unclear. Some suggestions in the GFS and EC that the upper level flow could become more zonal, which would shift temps back to the seasonable norms. Large spreads in potential sfc temps (upwards of 40 degrees) continue though, pointing to a variety of possible outcomes. Will stay the course and let the blend dictate highs/lows. SNOW CHANCES: for the most part model trends favor dry conditions for the new week, with Thursday being the exception. Upper level shortwave trough progged to drop southeast from western Canada, spinning across the upper mississippi river valley/northern great lakes. GFS and EC drop mostly light QPF along/post associated cold front, with good agreement from a majority of their ensemble members. Looks to move through fairly quickly, but some light accums favored in this current setup. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1125 PM CST Sun Jan 23 2022 An area of low pressure was moving into southwest Minnesota late this evening and will continue to move southeast and into northern Illinois through Monday morning. A band of light snow on the north side of the low was spreading across the area and is expected to bring a period of IFR conditions to both site overnight. The snow should move out before sunrise with rapid improvement in the visibility but ceilings to remain MVFR. The clouds are expected to scatter out during the afternoon allowing VFR conditions to return. && .ARX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... WI...None. MN...None.
