Overview:

It has been a while since we've had a really windy day, but as
expected, temperatures warmed into the 60s and 70s, it turned windy
with most gusts 30 to 40 mph and scattered showers and thunderstorms
developed, especially east of I94.  Some of the storms produced
locally stronger winds (Volk Field gusted to 44 mph) and pea-sized
hail was reported in Warrens WI.  The 00Z MPX sounding had mixed to
nearly 700mb and with the colder airmass, the freezing level was
down to around 6400ft.

Water vapor satellite imagery/500mb heights had the broad trough
with the closed low over the Upper Great Lakes, a trough nearing the
Pacific Northwest, and a ridge extending into southwest Canada. Mid
and high level moisture was spilling into the Northern Plains and
WSR-88D radar echoes had been waning.  The latest subjective
surface analysis had a large area of high pressure to the west of
the local forecast area over the Plains. Winds were from the
northwest mostly 5 to 15 mph with temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

Today through Thursday Morning:

We remain under the influence of the trough to the east with
cyclonic flow and northwest flow aloft.  A 135kt upper level jet
is progged to dive southward across the Upper Mississippi Valley
today. Forecast soundings show mixing to around 850mb today, so
expect it to be breezy to windy again with gusts 20 to 30kts. Mid
clouds are forecast to increase for parts of MN/IA with some cold
air cumulus for parts of WI. The clouds affect mixing, but will
keep gusts in the 20 to 30kt range. Much cooler temperatures to
start the work week with highs only in the 50s to lower 60s. The
surface gradient relaxes Tuesday morning with diminishing winds
with lows in the 30s except for areas near the Mississippi River
which could hold closer to 40. Surface high pressure remains over
the area for Tuesday through Thursday morning.

Frost/Fog potential:

With dry air and light surface winds, areas of frost look most
promising near and north of I94 later tonight and Tuesday morning.
Patchy mid clouds are forecast for parts of Minnesota/Iowa, but low
dewpoints and light winds may allow temperatures to drop a few
degrees colder than expected. Will pass this on to the next
shift. A widespread frost looks likely Tonight night and Wednesday
morning with below freezing temperatures for the cold spots/along
and north of I94. The frost/freeze potential is a little less
clear for Wednesday night into Thursday as more clouds could
impact this time period. Lows each morning should be in the 30s
with 20s north of I94 Wednesday morning. If conditions continue as
forecast, will need frost/freeze headlines each morning until the
headlines are done for the season.

Surface dewpoint depressions look to be wide enough Tuesday morning
for limited valley fog. Wednesday and Thursday morning, dewpoint
spreads decrease with a strong inversion setting up. Included some
fog, especially in river valleys.

Thursday into Early Next Week:

The mid-tropospheric ridge builds in for the end of the week as the
trough that was off the West Coast tracks into the Northern Rockies.
By then...we'll also see if Tropical Storm Ian has moved on to the
Florida Coast as a Hurricane.  South flow increases with above
normal temperatures.  Although there may be some spotty
precipitation chances, the current synoptic pattern takes the
remnants of the hurricane toward TN/the Carolinas/KY/VA over the
weekend.  The approaching closed low is slow to move eastward across
the Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley until Monday. This
pattern supports above normal temperatures into early next week
and mainly dry weather until early next week.

VFR conditions will persist through the TAF period with NW winds
gusting 20-30 kts this afternoon subsiding this evening. Some
