W/NW low level winds continue to strengthen across our entire CWA
as our Blizzard event evolves from synoptically-driven snowfall to
a heavy wind-driven lake-enhanced snow event. Snow reports so far
indicate a general 4 to 8 inches has fallen across our entire
CWA...with certainly some locally higher amounts mainly within our
typical snowbelt areas. Wind speeds have significantly increased
since sunrise this morning...and will continue to increase
throughout the rest of the day and much of tonight in response to
further tightening of the pressure gradient on the back side of
the deep low to our east. Several local surface obs are routinely
reporting 1/4SM with heavy snow and blowing snow. Still expecting
5 to 9 inches of additional snow accumulation by the end of
today...with another 5 to 9 inches of snow expected for tonight.
W/NW winds will strengthen to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 to 50
mph possible thru tonight as well...creating significant
blowing/drifting snow and blizzard conditions. Will certainly
maintain all headlines at this time.

High Impact Weather Potential: Combination of very gusty winds and
snow to bring blizzard conditions today and tonight (and beyond).

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Much advertised significant winter storm rapidly taking shape across
the Great Lake early this morning, driven by intense polar jet (150+
knot) digging east across the Tennessee Valley and increasingly
negative tilt (and deepening) shortwave trough diving southeast into
the western Ohio Valley. Attendant baroclinic axis is literally
insane, with temperatures still in the 30s across northeast sections
of our area, with readings dropping several degrees below zero
across the western Ohio Valley. Surface response is what one would
expect giving above, with rapidly deepening low pressure working
northeast along leading edge of thermal gradient across southeast
lower Michigan into southern Ontario.

Troughing only deepens with time, pivoting east across the Ohio
Valley this morning...turning northeast and reaching vicinity
southern Quebec by later this evening. Deep layer forcing working
over that extreme thermal gradient will help drive intense surface
low development, with some progs showing is reaching sub 970mb
levels just east of Lake Huron by this evening. Extremely tight
pressure gradient between that low and strong Arctic originated high
pressure digging south into the northern Plains centers itself
directly overhead heading through today and tonight. All the above
sets the stage for one very impactful winter storm across the Great
Lakes into this weekend.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:

Fine tuning of snow amounts and winds as the forecast has been
largely set by previous shifts (many thanks to those...lol).

Details:

Initial round of isentropic ascent and frontogenetic forced
widespread snow will continue to drift north, with cross sectional
analysis and simple propagation suggesting the steadiest and
heaviest snow shifting north into eastern upper Michigan early this
morning. Weak trowal wrapping back west from eastern Great Lakes low
will continue to generate snow across the the area today. Lake
moisture contribution will be on the increase as cold air advection
deepens the over-water convective layer. While have definitely seen
better convective depths, a lake-induced cloud bearing layer
extending up into the dendritic growth zone and deep layer moisture
above sharp inversion layer easily supports a robust lake response
in those favored west/northwest areas of both peninsulas. This will
only add to snowfall intensity as we head through today and tonight,
with local snowfall rates exceeding an inch per hour (more intense
rates held in check by flake fragmentation). Strong winds will
likely center zone of max convergence and attendant heaviest
snowfall rates a bit more inland than usual...and also allow snow
showers to work much farther inland. Speaking of those winds,
deepening northward moving surface based instability will make full
utilization of that intense pressure gradient mentioned earlier.
Bufkit momentum properties downright impressive, supporting upwards
of 50mph gusts at times, especially near the Lake Michigan
coast...with the strongest winds expected this afternoon into this
evening.

Upshot to all the above...still looking at additional snowfall
through tonight near or in excess of a foot in those famed snowbelt
locations. Much less snow away from those favored areas, likely on
the order of a few inches by Saturday morning. Won't matter one bit
really (will be impossible to actually measure anyhow), with
combination of those gusty winds and snow resulting in periods of
whiteout conditions, especially in those more open and exposed areas
along north-south roadways. Travel will become only more difficult
with time today and tonight, with some roads likely to become
impassable. Needless to say best course of action is to avoid travel
if at all possible. Additional details to all this concerns can be
found in the ongoing blizzard warnings.

...The Lingering Effects of the Storm: Wind and Lake Effect...

High Impact Weather Potential...Lake effect snow possibly heavy at
times. Still windy, so blowing and drifting snow will continue.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast and Possible Impacts...Saturday, Winds
(1000-850mb), 850 mb temperatures (-15c to -18c) and moisture (90%
in  in the cloud layer) will continue into Saturday evening. All
three models continue the moisture over the region through Christmas
morning. Winds remain NW through the day, as the lake components
continue to be steady on the last few model runs. Winds will begin
to ramp down a bit, but still will be high enough to continue
blowing and drifting. it's unlikely that the SE counties will be
able to maintain blizzard condition so will continue the tiered idea
of the headlines. However, would not be surprised if more of the
blizzard warnings are lifted early on Saturday. The models seem to
be sending a signal that the Lake Michigan shore and the lake effect
zones will probably remain with blizzard conditions. Christmas Eve,
the synoptic moisture begins to fall off overnight. The models still
look about the same as far as synoptic moisture and the 850 mb
temperatures are still roughly in the best temperature range for the
DGZ to continue snow flake production. The inversion height is now
begins move up a bit after descending a bit early. snow amounts look
to be light to moderate through night. Christmas day, The winds are
beginning to back to the WNW during the day and the 850 mb
temperatures start to warm, not to mention the synoptic moisture
begins to move out of the Upper Great Lakes. so have begun to ramp
done the snow amounts minor to light amounts (less than 3 inches).
Christmas night, the winds continue to ramp down and stay WNW or
even West overnight. Models are showing the some of the snow would
be in the West favored areas in NW Lower, and the WNW areas in E
Upper. amounts are mainly minor, with a few locations having light
amounts. It looks like this would be the end of the system.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.

Extended (Monday through Thursday)...Monday, The models are somewhat
in better agreement today with some sort of NW component as the
ridge pops up to the west. Which then becomes the main question,
where is the ridge on Monday. The GFS has it in W Minnesota. The
ECMWF has it in W Upper, and the CMC has it in W Wisconsin/E
Minnesota. Each model has some precipitation (snow) affecting part
of the region. Will just go with the NBM. Tuesday, The jet stream
looks to turn more progressive as we head into the middle of the
week. all of the shortwave troughs at 500 mb are about the same now
on the all of the models. So the chance of snow over the E Upper
looks good and it looks like it would mainly Tuesday night.
Wednesday, 500 mb ridging on both the GFS and ECMWF drying things
out for the day. Wednesday night, however, a feature moves through
the region, and kicks off precipitation. The GFS looks like rain
showers possible or maybe some sort of mix. The ECMWF remains dry,
which looking at the GFS soundings for that time period would make
sense. The CMC would be a mix with a cold front passing through by
12z/Thu. Left the mix on the NBM, although I took out the FZRA that
it was trying to put in there. This will be watched closely to see
if we need to leave it in there in the coming days. Thursday and
thursday night the NBM numbers show a mix or all rain as the cold
front on the CMC turns into a warm front on the front end of the
next system that is pretty weak compared to this system. The ECMWF
is dry! It forms precipitation over SE Lower and pushes it out of
the state. Left the NBM idea. As noted early in the discussion, we
are heading into a more progressive pattern. So think that anything
past Tuesday morning is a guess until the pattern shows where it's
heading.
