...Windy with lake effect snow showers today and tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential...Windy conditions combined with
falling and blowing snow will lend to hazardous driving conditions
across portions of Eastern Upper and Northwest/North Central Lower
Michigan today and tonight.

Deep low pressure center is making its way thru Lake Superior toward
Ontario early this morning. Associated cold front is in the process
of sliding thru our CWA. Temps ahead of this front have warmed well
into the 40s to near 50 degrees...while temps behind the front are
dropping into the 30s and 20s as low level CAA commences. Area of
rain showers along and ahead of the cold front are in the process of
exiting eastward out of our CWA...as a narrow dry slot is now
entering our area immediately behind the cold front. Not much in the
way of synoptically-driven precip over Wisconsin...but weak lake-
induced banding is beginning to develop across portions of Upper
Michigan per latest MQT base ref radar loop.

CAA will continue thru today and into this evening before low levels
begin to modify/warm and dry out late tonight. Wrap-around moisture
along the southern periphery of the departing low center will
provide some additional low level moisture to aid in lake snow
production...but appears time frame for this feature to impact our
CWA will be limited to this afternoon and evening. Focus for most
persistent snowfall and greatest accumulations will be across
Eastern Upper Michigan (especially Chippewa county) and across far
Northern and NW Lower Michigan (mainly north of m-72). Have
diminished expected snow amounts across our entire CWA...but the
above outlined area should receive advisory level snowfall. Northern
portions of Chippewa county should lean toward high end advisory
snowfall (5-7 inches)...and combined with strong winds/blowing
snow...will opt to maintain the Winter Storm Warning for this
county. Mackinac county and our westerly flow Northern Lower
Michigan counties will remain in a Winter Wx Advisory with 1 to 4
inches of snow expected combined with strong winds producing blowing
snow and lowered vsbys. Will move some counties that were in a
Winter Wx Advisory into a Wind Advisory with an inch or less of snow
expected away from where westerly flow is maximized.

Temps will generally fall into or thru the 30s throughout today as
CAA continues. Low temps tonight will drop into the upper teens to
mid 20s.

.SHORT TERM...(Thursday through Friday)

High Impact Weather Potential: None

High pressure will continue to build over the central CONUS and
ridge into the Great Lakes region early Thursday. This will diminish
any lingering showers Thursday morning...although lake effect clouds
will linger on through the day. Another area of low pressure begins
to develop on the lee side of the Rockies Friday bringing return
flow and increasing moisture to northern Michigan. This will bring
increased cloudiness throughout the day Friday along with above
normal temperatures for this time of the year (again)...reaching
into the low to mid 40s during the afternoon hours. Winds will
remain breezy through the afternoon hours Friday. Rain chances will
increase late Friday evening and into the overnight hours.

Afternoon temperatures Thursday will reach into the low to mid 30s
and warm into the low to mid 40s Friday.

High Impact Weather Potential: Strong winds, minor lake effect
potential for the weekend.

The developing system mentioned at the end of the previous forecast
discussion will begin impacting northern Michigan during the
weekend. To what extent the impacts will be is still to be seen.
This system appears to be rather progressive and should move through
quicker than the past storm system. Temperatures Saturday may reach
50 degrees in some parts of northeast lower...which is nearly 20
degrees above normal for this time of the year. There is a chance of
some strong winds with this system and some potential for quick lake
effect/enhanced snow on the backside of the departing system with
wrap around moisture and cold 850mb temperatures. High pressure is
then progged to quickly build over the central CONUS once again,
which would provide precipitation-free weather to start the next
work week and possibly beyond with temperatures in the mid to upper
30s for most areas...which is slightly above normal for this time of
the year.

Period of rather high impact weather expected across the taf
locations through this period. Expect primarily MVFR conditions
through the forecast. Mixture of rain/snow showers early this
morning will transition to lake effect snow showers today, with lake
snows continuing through this evening. Likely to see brief periods
of IFR conditions under any heavier snow showers. Snow amounts
shouldn't be too extreme, likely on the order of an inch or two.
Winds continue to increase in speed, becoming very gusty out of the
west/southwest. Expect wind gusts in excess of 35 knots, producing
area of blowing and drifting snow. Per the usual with lake effect,
expect the worst conditions across eastern upper and northwest lower
Michigan. Expect conditions to slowly improve later this evening,
and especially just beyond this taf period.

Winds and waves will strengthen to gale warning criteria today and
will continue thru Thursday as deep low pressure lifts thru the Lake
Superior and into Ontario. Winds will strengthen to storm warning
criteria within Whitefish Bay this afternoon and tonight. Cold air
advecting into our region behind the associated cold front will
produce lake effect snow showers...targeting our typical snowbelt
areas today and tonight. Dry wx is expected for Thursday as winds
diminish and temps begin to moderate.
