.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Fairly zonal flow aloft at this early
hour across the northern tier of the nation's midsection. Subtle mid-
level shortwave embedded within larger scale flow and weak attendant
surface reflection continue to rotate northeast out of the forecast
area...gradually taking any lingering drizzle/flurries along with it
through the early morning hours. Heading through the remainder of
the day, heights gradually rise with southeasterly return flow
ramping up ahead of low pressure dropping into the northern plains
out of the southern Canada. This system is expected to bring a
period of isentropically driven rain later tonight into Wednesday
morning, along with occasionally breezy winds.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Lingering morning fog. Rain timing/
amounts tonight.

Plenty of low-level moisture leading to fog across much of northern
lower, locally dense in spots. This is expected to gradually burn
off/mix out through the morning hours, initially across northwest
lower and sections of eastern upper...eventually across the higher
terrain and interior sections of northeast lower potentially closer
to or a bit after noon. Issued a SPS and graphic through early
this morning regarding this fog given widespread visibilities
under a mile and localized reports ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
Will continue to monitor trends over the next few hours for the
potential for a dense fog advisory across at least a handful of
counties.

Southeasterly return flow ramps up through the day, aiding to help
mix out the fog, but also bringing increased mid-upper level
moisture to the region by late afternoon into the evening hours.
Current trends support rain chances arriving across far northwest
lower around 04-06z, gradually spreading across the remainder of the
northern lower and much of eastern upper by 09z, and continuing
through the end of the forecast period early Wednesday morning. QPF
amounts tonight generally in the 0.10-0.25" range, but some locally
higher amounts near 0.50" certainly in the realm of possibilities.

Some potential for some breaks of sun this afternoon with high
temperatures on southeast winds expected to warm through the 40s
across much of northern Michigan...even some low 50s not out of the
question in downsloping areas of northwest lower. Lows tonight
falling into the upper 30s and low 40s.

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)

...Showery; Milder Wednesday then Cooler...

The expansive upper level low stretching from the Plains to the
western Great Lakes will take its time moving across the region. A
decent slug of rain out head of this system is expected to move
through on Wednesday. Rainfall amounts of between a half and three
quarters of an inch are expected which will add to already high
river levels. The upper trough will essentially stall out to our
west across Wisconsin through much of Thursday. Weak upper level
disturbances rotating around the parent upper trough will bring
chances for showers Wednesday night into Thursday. Highs ranging
from the mid 40s to low 50s Wednesday then the low to mid 40s
Thursday.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)

...Cooler through Saturday then Warming Temperatures...

The slow moving upper trough will weaken with time but continue to
bring chances for showers Thursday night into Friday with wrap
around moisture possibly lingering showers into Saturday as well.
Colder air advecting in behind the system will lead to increasing
chances for a mix with or change over to snow showers (especially at
night). Am not expecting much actual snow accumulation but a thin
coating is possible in some areas Thursday and Friday nights. Beyond
that, deep troughing along the west coast will lead to a building
ridge along the East coast. The Great Lakes will likely be in
between these two systems leading to warmer temperatures but with
chances for rain showers (mainly early next week). Some spots across
inland northern lower will likely break into the 60s on Monday for
highs while eastern upper likely rises into the 50s.

Conditions are expected to remain mainly IFR through the
remainder of the night due to low cigs and a mix of mist, drizzle,
and fog across the area. Some slow improvement expected into the
morning hours as low level moisture begins to scour out. Dry through
much of Tuesday before rain showers move back in very late Tuesday
night. No significant wind issues through this period.

Sub-advisory winds/waves expected to continue into this afternoon.
However, east-southeast winds will be on the increase late tonight
through at least early afternoon Wednesday with small craft advisory
conditions likely on many of northern Michigan's nearshore waters.

Areas of fog have developed across much of northern Michigan and
are expected to continue through early this morning before
gradually dissipating. Motorists should be aware of the potential
for reduced visibilities below one half mile at times. Use
caution if traveling and allow extra time to reach your
destination.
