.High Impact Weather...Accumulating lake effect snow in parts of
northern lower. Very low wind chills across eastern upper.

A short wave moving across the region is expected to shift current
west northwest flow lake effect snow bands into the northwest
this evening. In addition, the mean flow picks up some and
combines with an expected land breeze tonight (from the very cold
inland temperatures) to focus/intensity bands. The ongoing
banding across Antrim and Otsego counties is likely to
reorientate more northwest affecting Antrim and Kalkaska
counties, perhaps clipping northeastern parts of Grand Traverse
county later this evening and overnight. There could be a few
inches of snow accumulation in these areas. Therefore...will pair
down current advisories to these three counties. Elsewhere across
eastern upper lows are expected to fall into the -10 to -20 degree
range and combine with winds of 5 to 10 mph to drop wind chills
to as low as 30 below zero, hence the wind chill advisory.
Northern lower is not expected to get quite cold but still looking
at lows in the single digits below and above zero.

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow expected Wednesday
evening through Thursday, especially across eastern upper, Tip of
the Mitt, and NW lower. Gusty winds will lead to blowing snow and
quick drops in visibility at times.

Pattern Synopsis:

Troughing over New England will quickly slide into the Atlantic on
Wednesday as shortwave ridging moves over the Great Lakes.
Associated surface high pressure will build from the Midwest into
the eastern seaboard by Thursday morning. A second upper-level wave
will dig into the region by Thursday afternoon, providing favorable
ascent aloft to support a cyclone that will trek across Hudson Bay.
An attendant cold front will swing from Ontario across northern
Michigan Thursday evening as high pressure sets in across the
Midwest once again on Friday behind this frontal passage.

Forecast/Details:

Any snow chances lingering into Wednesday morning will be confined
close to lakeshores and are expected to diminish by the afternoon as
low-level moisture and wind direction become increasingly
unfavorable to support lake effect convection. While discussed more
in the near term, the main concern Wednesday morning will be
dangerously cold wind chills across northern Michigan -- especially
north of the bridge. Sub-zero wind chills are expected to continue
for most of northern Michigan through Wednesday afternoon.

Late Wednesday and Thursday, the focus will shift to the next
accumulating snow chances for the area. Increasing moisture is
expected ahead of the aforementioned front, likely supporting a band
of snow with lake enhancement Wednesday evening/Wednesday night.
Forecast soundings display very favorable moisture that extends
through a significant portion of the DGZ -- potentially 5kft or
more. This would generate large dendrites and heavy snowfall rates
at times. With SW/WSW low-level winds, the most likely area of
heaviest accumulations will be across the Tip of the Mitt where
several inches of snow will be possible. Accumulating snow is also
expected across eastern upper and NW lower, but a combination of ice
cover in northern Lake Michigan and reduced fetch across the lake
surface will work to hinder totals in these areas. Marginal delta-
Ts will also help limit higher snowfall potential with lake
enhancement. A primary concern with snowfall Wednesday night into
Thursday will be blowing snow and considerable drops in visibility
at times with gusty winds, especially near the lakeshores. Wind
gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be possible, creating hazardous travel
conditions with any falling snow -- regardless of expected
accumulations.

After the front moves through in the Thursday afternoon/evening
timeframe, N/NNW winds will bring lake effect snow chances to follow
with the best chance for additional accumulations coming across
areas west of Whitefish Bay and south of Grand Traverse Bay.
Otherwise, a brief warmup into the mid 20s is expected Thursday
afternoon before cold temperatures return after the frontal passage.
Highs on Friday will likely remain in the single digits above zero
for most with wind chills below zero through the afternoon.

High Impact Weather Potential: Low for now

Amplified troughing will encompass much of the CONUS east of the
Mississippi through Saturday as broad ridging sits in place across
the rest of the country. Subsidence aloft at the inflection point of
these features will build surface high pressure across the
Mississippi Valley through the first half of the weekend. Thus,
mostly precip-free weather is expected through the duration of the
long term. The chance for light snow can never be ruled out in
January across northern Michigan, but little to no impactful winter
precip is anticipated heading into early next week. Cold
temperatures will continue through the first half of the weekend
with overnight lows near/below zero. Temperatures look to warm up
closer to average by early next week with highs in the mid 20s and
lows in the upper single digits/low teens.
