Issued at 851 PM EST Mon Dec 26 2022 Just some relatively minor spatial and temporal tweaks to the going forecast tonight as scattered lake effect snow showers continue to percolate across parts of northwest lower and over far northern Chippewa County. Expecting at least isolated activity to continue south of the bridge at times pretty much through the night while activity along/north of M-28 gradually recedes farther north with time as southwesterly low-level winds aid to lift snow showers back across Lake Superior and into Ontario. Chilly low temps tonight...generally spanning the teens area- wide. && .NEAR TERM...(Through Tonight) Issued at 327 PM EST Mon Dec 26 2022 ...Light lake effect snow showers continue thru tonight... High Impact Weather Potential...None. Broad/deep troughing is holding over much of the Great Lakes region this afternoon as stagnant low pressure remains parked near James Bay. NW flow lake effect snow showers continue to stream into much of our CWA...with plenty of Lake Superior preconditioning still available. Large area of high pressure remains upstream over the Central and Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile...a short wave currently north of the Arrowhead of Minnesota is dropping SE toward Lake Superior and Upper Michigan. This feature will clip our CWA tonight and provide some weak synoptic enhancement to our ongoing NW flow lake effect snow shower activity...mainly across Eastern Upper Michigan. Inversion heights will generally hold around 4-5 kft thru the night. Expect a general 1 to 3 inches of new snow accumulation across Eastern Upper Michigan...with some locally higher amounts near Whitefish point. Our snowbelts areas of Northern Lower Michigan will see another inch or two thru tonight. Thus...will not issue any headlines at this time...but will certainly keep an eye on how snow shower activity evolves across Eastern Upper Michigan...specifically Northern Chippewa county...where inversion heights are a bit higher and synoptic support is stronger. Overnight lows will again drop into the teens. && .SHORT TERM...(Tuesday through Thursday) Issued at 327 PM EST Mon Dec 26 2022 ...More snow chances Tuesday, milder and mixy later in week... High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal for now. Watching precipitation type issues late Tuesday through Thursday Synopsis/Forecast: A quick-hitting shortwave drops down through northwest flow over the Great Lakes on Tuesday and quickly exits stage right Tuesday night, this will bring us our next round of light accumulating snow, mainly for the tip of the Mitt and Ern Upper. The upper level pattern amplifies as a 140+ kt jet deepens troughing over the Rockies...with heights rising over the Great Lakes Wednesday and Thursday. The western troughing will induce a surface low in the lee of the Central Rockies Wed night that will move NNE to Minnesota by Thursday night. On Tuesday a baroclinic zone will be set up just to our north with some low to mid level moisture pooling along it. With a compact shortwave moving southeast across our region we'll have enough dynamic lift combined with isentropic ascent to generate snow showers, especially across the U.P. through the day. A corridor of better moisture doesn't arrive south of the bridge until the late afternoon or evening. Southwest winds will become gusty from mid-day through the evening with the tightening pressure gradient. Tuesday night will bring some P-type concerns as warmer air continues to advance northeastward. There could be some sleet or freezing drizzle mixed in with the snow late overnight, with low confidence in either, which will be heavily dictated by amount of moisture. On Wednesday the wave moves east and the surface boundary/associated moisture corridor lifts farther north into Ontario. We'll remain in southwest winds, with much of the day quiet and dry until another surge of moisture moves in from the southwest overnight. This moisture quickly strips out to the north again however, leaving Thursday once again a drizzle/freezing drizzle low crud given expected thermal profiles. Temperatures warm above freezing through midweek. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday) Issued at 327 PM EST Mon Dec 26 2022 High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal for now. Heading through late week and into the weekend we'll have a few more waves moving scooting across us from the southwest.
