Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
One extremely amplified configuration to the mid/upper level flow
regime out there early this morning, with northern Michigan centered
under stout and sharp ridge axis, itself centered between equally
impressive Canadian Maritime and southwest Conus cold core gyres.
Elongated surface ridge displaced just east of its parent,
stretching from Hudson Bay south into the southeast Conus. Despite
overhead deep layer subsidence, plenty of low level moisture remains
trapped, resulting in plenty of clouds, especially south of the big
bridge. Downslope flow off the Ontario Plateau helping scour out the
clouds across at least northeast sections of eastern upper Michigan,
resulting in temperatures there falling into the teens. Of course,
all those clouds to the south have kept Troll Land several degrees
warmer.
As one would expect given such an amplified flow regime, large scale
features will be slow moving over the coming days. Expect overhead
ridge axis to remain just that, centered directly overhead through
tonight as that southwest Conus closed low rotates out into the
central Plains by sunrise Wednesday.
Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:
Temperatures and cloud trends through tonight.
Details:
Expect low level east flow to gradually intensify today through
tonight, a result of a strengthening pressure gradient between
slowly departing surface high and that developing central Plains low
pressure. Continuous feed of very dry air, coupled with increasing
mechanical mixing, should result in at least some breaks in the
persistent low level overcast as we head through today into this
evening. Upper level moisture tied to that upstream low will again
result in increasing clouds overnight. Maturing warm conveyor
belt/northward surging Gulf of Mexico moisture plume ahead of that
low looks to remain off to our west through tonight, with increasing
dry east flow likely greatly impeding its east advance later
tonight. Expect temperatures to run a few degrees above specific
normals...with high temperatures today mainly in the lower and
middle 30s, and lows tonight mostly ranging through the 20s.

...A Messy Couple of Days...
High Impact Weather Potential...Mixed precipitation looks to kick
off the storm system on Wednesday with possible Freezing rain or
snow/ice pellets. Then wet snow on Thursday, and possibly freezing
drizzle Thursday afternoon.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast and Possible Impacts...Wednesday, after
discussing with the other offices, it looks like we have a timing of
the precipitation into the forecast area. The uncertainty with the
timing is the dry air, and how fast it is eaten up by the moisture
and precipitation as the system moves into the region. I would say
that the uncertainty on the timing is + or - 3 hours. relied pretty
much on the main models, and a limited amount of the CAMs. Several
of the CAMs, in particular, the FV3 and NAMNest, seemed the most
agressive with the precipitation in by 00z/Wed. comparatively, the
rest of the models were roughly around the same time which is in the
grids now. The NBM almost seemed to be on the faster pace, which
starting things before 12z/Wednesday. Model soundings have been
showing the dry air in the lower 500-600 mb of the atmosphere at 12z
over APX, and that the column moistens over the day. The timing
agrees with the WPC QPF grids as well. So the next issue is whether
there will be FZRA. Based on the probability of FZRA grids, There
are some chances for it, but again will the dry air allow for that
or not? There are a few scenarios. 1) the moisture aloft begins to
moisten dry air below, and warm the lower levels so it more of a mix
of rain/snow. 2) the lower level moistens, and turns to snow or
sleet as the evaporative cooling cools the column. 3) is mix of the
two, we maintain the rain, but the cooling at the sfc remains from
the evaporative cooling and freezing rain continues. If anything,
the models seem to suggest that the precipitation will move across
the region and continue Wednesday night. it could be messy along the
M-55 corridor as the freezing rain signals are the best there. It
may be only a few hundredths of ice, but that's enough to get the
ice built up and make things slippery. Thursday, the cold front
moves into the region, and it looks like Snow would be the dominate
p-type, but the mid-level dry slot moves into the forecast area, and
leaves a good drizzle/freezing drizzle signal on the model
soundings. The models show that in the afternoon, that the mid level
moisture returns with the center of the 500 mb closing in on N
Lower. so the drizzle may be an issue, before it changes back to
snow late Thursday afternoon and going into Thursday night.

High Impact Weather Potential...prolonged LES.
Extended (Friday through Monday)...Friday, colder air gets into the
region, and we should start to pick up some LES or at least some
lake enhancement. Winds in the morning look to be S or SSW, but
become SW in the afternoon, which remains through Friday night.
Saturday, The models are somewhat closer with the temperatures with
-10 to -12c on the models at 00z/Sun. The SW flow continues through
the day, which could be an issue for the Lake Michigan counties in
NW lower, and the western part of Mackinac, and maybe Chippewa
counties. The models show the trough moves through sometime
overnight (CMC and Ecmwf have it through around 06z/Sun, while the
GFs not until 12z/Sun) so NW flow will be possible. Sunday,
continued LES pattern continues despite the differences in the
models. Monday, The GFS and CMC continue the LES into Monday. The
GFS continues it into Tuesday. The CMC may limit it into Monday
night. The ECMWF warms the 850 mb temperatures with the Ridge that
it has moving into the forecast area, and then a trough Monday
night, and cooling temperatures again.

MVFR CIGs look to continue through most of the night across all TAF
sites. Exception will likely be CIU late tonight/early Tuesday
morning as a thin strip of low clouds moves out, leading to VFR
conditions. As mentioned in the previous discussion, CIGs may drop
close to IFR at APN late tonight, but current expectation is that
CIGs will remain above IFR criteria and has been reflected in the
TAF accordingly as OVC011. VFR conditions are anticipated as cloud
cover scatters during the afternoon, primarily across areas near
MBL/TVC/PLN. MVFR conditions look to return Tuesday night as a
system draws closer from the Great Plains. Otherwise, ESE winds
will increase today with gusts of 15-20 kts at times during the
afternoon and evening.
