.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)
Issued at 339 AM EST Tue Jan 11 2022

...Becoming brisk with light lake effect snow...

High Impact Weather Potential...low. Light lake effect snow,
becoming windy with cold wind chills and some blowing/drifting.

High pressure is over the lower OH Valley, extending ridging ne-
ward toward Lk Huron. Low-level winds have been backing, with lake
effect pushed northward into far northern lower MI. In surface
obs, we've seen occasional vsby restrictions (down to 1-3SM) at
Mack Isl and Rogers City. This is not impressive, given the still
very-chilly airmass and resulting small flake sizes that should
result. Sharp 850mb warm advection is getting underway now, and at
that level the arctic airmass will be emphatically displaced
today. Surface temps will not see as drastic of a response, though
it will not be as cold as Monday.

Behind the departing ridge, and ahead of our next incoming front,
the pressure gradient tightens up considerably thru this afternoon
and evening. Stronger warm advection aloft will lower the
inversion, limiting mixing up to about 900mb/2k ft. Nam Bufr
soundings suggest a few gusts of 30-35mph across most of northern
MI, but 35-40mph close to Lake MI and to Saginaw Bay. Even with
little new snow (and unimpressive snow cover depth across most of
northern MI, excluding Chippewa Co), a touch of blowing/drifting
snow will emerge today. A lot of snow cover produced from recent
snow events has been fine and will be easy to blow around.

Though a long and fairly stable sw fetch settles in this afternoon
and evening, those very low inversion heights will keep any snow
showers light. Have boosted pops a smidge in the broader Straits
region today, but have accums topping out near an inch over nw
Emmet, central Mackinac, and sw Chippewa Co.

Relatively cloudy today, with the shrinking inversion acting to
trap moisture beneath it. Maybe some peeks of sun in the far se.
Max temps have been tweaked lower, ranging from 20f to 30f.

Tonight, fast nw flow aloft will send another shortwave digging
across northern Quebec. At the surface, low pressure is over
Hudson bay. A warm front kicks east across northern MI early
tonight, before a trailing cold front reaches eastern upper MI
toward morning. A chance for snow showers lingers over the Straits
area and eastern upper MI early tonight, at the end of the long
Lake MI fetch. Overnight, winds start to veer, and the onset of
cold advection will contribute to better pops overnight in
northern Chippewa Co, thanks to lake effect off of Superior. Not
enough time to this to amount to anything thru 12Z/7am.

A wide range of min temps tonight, though milder than early this
morning for sure. Lows from the lower teens in parts of eastern
upper and ne lower MI, to the mid 20s near MBL and Frankfort.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)
Issued at 339 AM EST Tue Jan 11 2022

High Impact Weather Potential: Return of cold temps/wind chills
Thursday night...

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Last evening's surface analysis shows surface high pressure
attempting to overtake the Upper Midwest and Upper Great
Lakes...though lake aggregate troughing, apparently reinforced to
some extent by a niblet of energy aloft diving into the backside of
the trough, still holds firm across our area.
Meanwhile...upstream...a couple of NW-SE oriented surface boundaries
are noted across our Plains and the Canadian Prairies as well. These
are associated with a tight thermal gradient aloft, which should
continue to tighten as flow becomes more perpendicular to
isotherms...leading to warm advection across the Upper Midwest
through the next several hours or better. Pacific-based moisture is
present with these boundaries...attending a series of niblets
eastward as they nip the top off upper-level ridging across the
western CONUS...leading to a less amplified and more zonal pattern
across the western US.

Going forward into Wednesday...shortwave energy riding the
baroclinic zone into the eastern US will help to drag a cold front
southward through the day...as jet energy rides over the ridge out
west...ahead of a potent little shortwave trough racing eastward
towards the West Coast. Will look for a niblet of energy to dig into
the base of the trough across the eastern US Thursday...deepening
troughing to our south...as upper level energy pinwheels by to our
north, keeping a cold airmass in play for the Great Lakes. This
trough axis, extending from a sub-500dm 500mb low near Hudson Bay
down into the southeastern US by Thursday evening should pivot
eastward through the night Thursday night...as that potent upstream
energy punches through the ridge and begins to make a southeastward
turn late Thursday night to follow the baroclinic zone aloft.
Current guidance suggests this baroclinic zone/thermal gradient
should be largely to our west and southwest, thanks to that niblet
in the southern stream of the flow helping to draw down some colder
temperatures aloft Thursday into Thursday night...but will have to
watch this carefully in the coming days...(see long-term discussion
for more...well, discussion).

Primary Forecast Concerns: Periods of light snow...Cold temps/wind
chills Thursday night (particularly E.UP)...

Winds Wednesday will be on the decrease...with the stronger pressure
gradient moving away to our south ahead of the cold front early in
the day...as the front drops through from north to
south...potentially reaching the Saginaw Bay region/central Lower by
late afternoon/early evening. High pressure attempting to slide in
from the north...though a somewhat futile attempt, given lake
aggregate troughing...will allow for lighter winds going into
Wednesday night...with development of land breezes a possibility.
Pressure gradient will be tightening again to some degree, however,
going into Thursday night...as a stronger area of high pressure
drops down from northern Canada...and as surface low pressure
develops off the East Coast with that niblet to our south, in the
southern stream of the flow.

Better mid-level moisture with the cold front appears to be more or
less on the leading edge of the surface front...as some additional
moisture slides eastward/southeastward along the boundary as a
slightly more potent little niblet passes by well to our southwest
in the afternoon. This is supportive of the idea of a little broader
snowfall, particularly across the southern half of our CWA for a
short time Wednesday afternoon/evening in the presence of the
surface front, as it could lead to some seeder-feeder processes and
produce some slightly more widespread snowfall towards late
afternoon/early evening. 925mb temps dropping back toward -8C behind
the front suggest overlake instability will begin to play a factor
Wednesday afternoon from north to south behind the cold front as
well...so some lake effect is possible, particularly across Eastern
Upper and the Tip of the Mitt and particularly early in the
day...though inversion heights around or below 5kft aren't overly
impressive. Wouldn't be surprised to see some nuisance lake effect
linger into the night, even so.

Initial push of mid-level moisture should depart through Wednesday
night...with more riding the boundary south into the Great
Lakes...as another niblet passes by to our south. With boundary
layer moisture still in play...could be looking at some continued
light snow through the day...with some lake enhancement potential in
north to northwest flow areas (though this lake enhancement
currently doesn't appear to be anything to write home about). As mid-
levels dry out again Thursday afternoon...would look for a
transition to a more pure lake effect as that high pressure/ridging
tries to take hold of the region Thursday night.

As additional cold air trickles in through the remainder of the
short term with each of these niblets drawing the baroclinic zone a
little further south...will look for more cold nights for the short
term. Wednesday night will be a bit chilly...though cloud cover
should help mitigate that to some degree...but will still look for a
touch of cold air drainage across Eastern Upper. Thursday night will
be of more concern...as winds turn more northeasterly with that
approaching surface high pressure dropping in from the Canadian
Prairies. Though 850mb temps with this airmass don't currently
appear as cold as what has been overhead the last few days...given
that it will be a cold Canadian high with its origins in the
vicinity of the Arctic Circle...and given that northeasterly winds
would also support cold, dry drainage flow from the higher terrain
of Ontario...suspect it could be much colder there Thursday night
than even tonight, particularly as skies could clear out in some
locations there. Maybe even the coldest night of the year for them
so far? We'll see... Any wind at all in these sorts of temperatures
would lead to another round of very cold wind chills for this same
area currently experiencing them as I write this (8z/11 ob from KANJ
reports a wind chill of -23F)...and with that potentially tightening
pressure gradient...will have to monitor this closely in the coming
days.

&&

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)
Issued at 339 AM EST Tue Jan 11 2022

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal attm...more cold air on the
way for the end of the week...

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Going into Friday morning...aforementioned potent shortwave from the
end of the short term will be diving southeastward along the
baroclinic zone...which guidance currently places to our
west/southwest. This shortwave to our west should induce surface
pressure falls across the central Plains and/or southern
Plains...with some potential for lee cyclogenesis to occur along the
Rockies as well. Exact position and depth of the surface low with
this feature is still uncertain...though guidance does seem to be
getting a bit better of a handle on it the last few runs...with
operational guidance trending a little more south and west with the
surface reflection attm. Confidence seems to be increasing in
impacts, particularly to our west, with this system...noting WPC now
has a bullseye of 50 percent or greater probability of liquid
equivalent precip greater than 0.25 inches in 24hrs over the Upper
Mississippi Valley for Friday into Friday night. Will have to
continue to monitor this in the coming days...as a north or eastward
shift would bring impacts a bit closer to our fair CWA...though it's
not entirely out of the question we could see a little snow from
this regardless.

Beyond this system for Friday into Saturday...guidance remains
largely nebulous on the details...with potential for another
shortwave to scoot through the area in the Sunday/Monday timeframe
attm...though overall signals still point toward troughing
persisting across the eastern US through early next week. In the
meantime...will be looking at a chilly end to the current week while
we remain well north/east of the baroclinic zone...firmly under the
influence of Arctic high pressure (even though we do have the lake
aggregate trough to generally keep us from getting too ridiculously
cold...).

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Tuesday night)
Issued at 1145 PM EST Mon Jan 10 2022

Strong/cold high pressure will slide just south of Michigan
overnight and then continue southeastward into the Ohio Valley on
Tuesday. Lake effect snow showers will continue to diminish
overnight into Tuesday thanks to increasing subsidence and
decreasing low level moisture. Focus of snow showers will also
shift northward toward the Straits and into Eastern Upper Michigan
overnight and Tuesday as low level flow backs from the NW to the
SW on the back side of the ridge axis. Overall conditions will
remain MVFR/low VFR overnight...occasionally dropping to IFR
within some snow showers. Conditions will improve to low VFR on
Tuesday. NW surface winds around 10 kts overnight will shift to
the SW at 10 to 20 kts on Tuesday.
