High pressure in central IL will gradually advance up the OH
Valley into Sunday. This is pushing cool but gradually drier air
into northern MI. Brisk winds continue, but the low-level flow will
back from the w/wnw to the wsw during the night. Some flurries are
present in both peninsulas, but the cool airmass is too shallow
and dry to support more. Observed 00Z APX sounding has the
inversion right at 850mb/3200ft, and the sub-inversion airmass is
not terribly moist. Partial clearing has worked in far sw
sections, and in western Mack Co. There is a swath of mid/high
clouds crossing the area, associated with a passing shortwave,
though this moisture is not connecting with the shallow lake-
generated moisture.
With the gradually backing low-level flow, Lake MI will support
clouds and perhaps flurries near/north of M-72 for overnight.
Otherwise quiet, though cool/brisk. Min temps will dip into the
mid-upper teens in the interior of both peninsulas, near 20f for
the coasts.

...Lingering Snow Showers and Diminishing Winds...
High Impact Weather Potential...Still some gusty winds into this
evening across much of northern Michigan. Snow showers limiting
visibility across parts of eastern upper.
Conditions are slowly calming down across a majority of the area.
Winds are still on the gusty side but have diminished below high
wind advisory criteria. Expect gusts up to 30 mph into the evening
hours. Despite excellent over lake instability, lake effect snow
showers have been underwhelming today across northern lower due to
the preponderance of dry air (mean 850-700 mb rh capped at about 50
percent or so). Snow shower activity has been a little better off of
Lake Superior across eastern upper. Still a couple of decent bands
ongoing (and likely some blowing snow) so will continue the winter
weather advisory across western and central Chippewa county through
early evening. Only another inch or so of accumulation is expected.
West northwest winds slowly back into the west southwest overnight
and it looks like a small uptick in moisture late. So scattered snow
showers are expected with a shift out of northwest lower and
northern parts of eastern upper toward the tip of the mitt and
southeast Chippewa county later tonight. Accumulations should be
under an inch. Clouds overall look to have a difficult time breaking
up across the northern two-thirds of the region while they likely
scatter out across the south. Winds overnight are still expected to
be in the 10 to 20 mph range which should limit lows to the upper
teens and low 20s for the most part.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast and Possible Impacts...
Short term pattern focus is on a large vertically stacked area of
low pressure over James Bay pinwheeling weak disturbances through
fast flow across northern parts of the region. Surface high pressure
over the Ohio Valley will produce a pressure gradient that will
keep winds elevated, especially over marine areas. WNW LES flow
will continue but in a weakened state as 8H temps warm and
moisture begins to become an issue. Chances for snow showers will
continue through Sunday morning for the tip of the mitt and all
day for eastern upper, but most of that will be little more than
flurries and little if any additional accumulation is expected.
Monday begins a gradual trend that will continue through the
extended period where the James Bay low drifts northwestward
somewhat, turning our upper flow more zonal. Another impulse moving
through this flow could bring another quick round of rain or snow
showers on Monday as temperatures moderate.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Saturday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Minimal.
The pattern described in the short term section will continue the
rest of the work week. Zonal flow will gradually turn somewhat
southwest by midweek as the James Bay low drifts to the northwest
and an upper low crashes into the Four Corners region. Weak ripples
in the flow will continue to affect northern Michigan. These little
bits of energy are hard to time, but will produce generally
unsettled weather with mostly cloudy skies and chances for rain or
snow showers every 36-48 hours or so. With little if any arctic air
to work with, none of these features look to produce particularly
impactful weather.
Medium range models have been toying with a more impactful system
toward the end of the week and into the weekend, but timing and
location are changing significantly run to run so we are still in
the watch-and-see stage.

drier air will return to the area. Lake-induced clouds and

W to sw winds will be somewhat gusty, especially on Sunday. LLWS
possible Sunday evening, especially at TVC.
