High Impact Weather Potential...Very low.

Satellite imagery along with surface observations indicate that
low clouds are scouring out this afternoon as expected across
northern Michigan from southwest to northeast. This process is
expected to continue into this evening. Meanwhile, warm advection
aloft on the back side of departing surface high pressure will
kick in overnight with an increase in mid/high clouds expected.
Winds have really come down this afternoon across the region but
are expected to begin to ramp up again overnight. It's a tough
temperature forecast but think there will be just enough of a
lull in the winds so some spots, mainly east of I-75 in northern
lower could drop down into the upper teens to low 20s before
rising overnight. Elsewhere steady evening temperatures in the mid
and upper 20s will rise overnight as well.

...Accumulating lake effect and strong winds Saturday...

High Impact Weather Potential: Brief shot of accumulating snow,
gusty winds and hazardous travel conditions.

Synopsis/Forecast: Broad flat ridging quickly pushes off to the east
as a wave pushes through the northern Plains on Friday. This will
aid a sfc low that will deepen within the left exit region of a 120-
140+ kt jet streak. This looks to set the stage for rain on the
front side transitioning to lake effect snow as the low departs.
Another much weaker system moves through to our north later Sunday.

Details: Straight southerly flow will be squeezed between a high
over the mid Atlantic and the incoming low over the northern Plains.
These southerly winds will advect warmth and moisture into our
region, and we'll saturate top-down through the day, with thickening
and lowering clouds through the day. Maybe we saturate enough in the
presence of enough dynamic lift to have a few rain showers move in
from the southwest, although confidence in this is low at this time.
Better moisture moves in overnight with rain showers spreading
across the whole region ahead of the cold front. The strong cold
front arrives at the western shore after midnight, and marches
quickly across the CWA. As strong CAA takes hold behind the cold
front we'll see a transition over to snow in the wee hours of the
morning. Believe this transition will take place between 3am and 6am
from west to east as the column rapidly cools below freezing. Quick
burst of snow through the early morning hours immediately along and
behind the front is possible...followed by a quick transition to NW
flow lake effect. This lake effect may not amount to a whole lot
through the day Saturday as some guidance suggests we struggle to
remain saturated through the DGZ, and will have sinking inversion
heights as subsidence takes over behind the low. We also rapidly
lose synoptic moisture above the boundary layer after mid-day. But
overlake instability will be in the upper teens if not more. Overall
this should be a fast-enough mover so that accumulations look
minimal. Believe we'll see a quick 2 to 3 inches in the typical
northwest flow belts of eastern upper and northern lower.

Winds: As the low moves into southeastern Ontario the gradient will
become very tight (thanks to incoming strengthening high pressure
moving into the Plains). This will result in strong winds with gusts
into the mid and upper 40's mph. Some locations across Ern Upper and
the Straits may see isolated gusts over 50mph.

Impacts: The rapid change over to snow along with the quick uptick
in winds will create slick roads and blowing snow with significantly
reduced visibility through Saturday morning into midday at least.
Even if snow totals don't amount to much we'll could still see near
white-out conditions as the winds rip apart any dendrites that form.

Saturday night into Sunday morning will be a relative lull in
activity thanks to high pressure moving through the Ohio Valley.
This lull is brief though as a clipper moves down through Ontario,
giving us more snow shower chances beginning mid-day Sunday.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal for now.

A clipper developing over Northwestern Ontario is tracking over the
northern great lakes region sunday night. Snowfall could persist if
this system progresses south, but latest trends have a lot of
variability with evolution and is more likely just going to cause a
small potential for snow over the Upper Peninsula and gusty winds
for all of Northern Michigan , especially along the shorelines.
Another round of light precipitation may be in store Tuesday due to
a baroclinic zone. Models have a lot of uncertainty with this as
they trend to struggle with these shortwave troughs. After that,
high pressure will once again sit over the great lakes region.
Temperatures remain below freezing next week, so all precipitation
is expected to be snowfall and to begin meteorological winter with
expected winter weather for Northern Michigan.
