High Impact Weather Potential: Will need to watch for some slushy
light snow accumulation later tonight.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
Extremely amplified mid/upper level pattern continues across NOAM
early this morning, with anamously deep troughing extending from
Hudson Bay south into the lower Ohio Valley...downstream of equally
impressive west coast centered ridge axis. Stating the obvious, but
our weather remains dominated by the former, producing seasonably
chilly conditions and a rather active lake effect environment.
Speaking of those lake processes, passing shortwave trough/attendant
surface reflection is in the process of cutting across our area,
with weak post-wave subsidence helping throttle back a bit on what
was earlier some fairly well organized west flow lake effect.
Overhead trough about to reach peak amplification as strong 120+
knot upper level jet streak dives south out of Canada. This will
kick the amplification process into high gear, digging a strong
shortwave trough/closed mid level circulation right across our area
later tonight into Monday morning. Surface low pressure will deepen
in response across the eastern Great Lakes, producing increasingly
gusty northwest to north winds later tonight into Monday. Deep layer
forcing, plentiful synoptic scale moisture, and an increasingly
favorable lake effect environment are setting the stage for what
could be the first accumulating snow of this young season later
tonight into the first half of this upcoming week.
Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:
Shower evolution, precipitation type, and the potential for some
accumulating snow across parts of our area by Monday morning.
Details:
Expect lake enhanced precipitation to become more organized and
intense with time today and tonight as that upstream wave and
favored upper level jet support arrives. Thermodynamic lake
parameters become pretty impressive indeed, with complete loss of
any low level inversion and excellent lake induced cape through the
ice producing layer...especially by tonight. Kinematic profiles are
bit more "messy," with passing of surface troughs veering winds
around with time. Main trough digs south tonight, likely reaching
vicinity the Straits region near or shortly before sunrise Monday.
Rapid veering of winds to a more northerly direction expected after
its passage, with attendant sharp low level convergence only helping
the lake shower producing cause. Numerous showers expected in the
favored lake belts, simply following the cloud bearing winds for
best shower potential through the period. Wouldn't even rule out a
few claps of thunder tonight given non-existent inversion (well,
except the tropopause of course) and such impressive lake-induced
cape...both within a supportive deep layer forcing environment. Now,
onto the all important precipitation type. This, of course, remains
a much more formidable forecast challenge. Surface rooted melting
layer remains deep enough to support mainly rain into this evening,
although wouldn't be terribly surprised to see some graupel/wet
flakes under any more vigorous updrafts. Although best cold air
advection remains displaced to our west tonight, simple nocturnal
cooling will help shrink that melting layer with time, with wet bulb
zero levels falling sub 1K feet toward Monday morning over the
higher terrain of northern lower Michigan...supporting a rain/snow
mix or changeover to all snow. Simple magnitude of lake convection
will also likely help the cooling cause. Now, with all that said, I
do feel it will be a real struggle for low temperatures tonight to
reach freezing given maintenance of a well mixed boundary layer and
sustained lake modification. Raw guidance numbers confirm, keeping
even our higher interior areas at least a few degrees above freezing
(will definitely shy away from any statistical guidance
contribution). So expect an extremely wet snow, with snow-to-liquid
ratios likely remaining well below 10 to 1. Intensity of showers
will compensate some, but current thinking that snow accumulations
should remain largely under an inch. Definitely something to keep an
eye on though as we head into tonight.

High Impact Weather Potential: Rain/snow and winds Monday through
Tuesday...
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
Complex pattern setting up across North America centered on
anomalous ridging over the West Coast...with Omega Blocking in the
northern stream...and Rex Block over the West Coast as upper low
spins over Southern California. Unusually strong 140+ kt upper level
jet snaking through the flow across northern Canada, rounding the
ridge into north central Canada. Downstream ridging over Greenland
keeping polar energy from moving too far east in the Arctic regions.
Meanwhile...much closer to home...one vort max continues to spin its
way up toward James Bay...with additional energy crossing northern
Michigan as of 03z/16. Another potent vort max dropping southward
through Manitoba as well, with that aforementioned very strong jet
along with it along a strengthening meridional BCZ aloft...and cold
advection in the low-mid levels...with 1030mb surface high sliding
through central Canada. Occluded front lies just to our west,
stretching from western Ontario into the central Plains, along the
perimeter of the cold air aloft. Otherwise...confluence zone
stretches largely west to east across the center of the CONUS...with
surface BCZ from the departing upper low extending back along this
into northern TX, trapping the bulk of the better moisture across
the southern US.
Looking ahead...vort max poised across central Canada will continue
to drop in today...with upper trough potentially closing off over
the Great Lakes Monday. This will drive surface cyclogenesis just to
our east...leaving us in the tight pressure gradient between the
deepening surface low...and impending 1032+mb surface high sliding
across the central continent. An initial surface cold front will
sweep across the CWA during the first half of the day Monday as the
vort max punches into the base of the trough...as surface low to our
east occludes. Vorticity maximum will continue to progress through
the trough along with the strong upper level jet...ultimately
driving the surface low (albeit slowly) northeastward with time
through Tuesday...with guidance suggesting energy may try to wrap
around the back of the upper low and swing another surface trough
into the region...before things finally begin settle down a bit
going into Tuesday night with the (slow) departure of the trough
aloft.
Primary Forecast Concerns: Rain/snow (accumulating snow?) potential
Monday through Tuesday night... strong winds Monday into Tuesday...
As niblet dives into the region Monday...will look for a surface
reflection to drop through the area from the north as well. Looks as
though the surface trough will lag behind the vort max aloft...with
some potential for warm advection aloft behind the vort max,
actually...as slightly warmer temps in the lower and mid-levels wrap
around the upper low from the north with the system pretty rapidly
occluding just to our east. This slight warm advection could put a
hamper on precip potential/rates for us Monday into Monday
night...so will have to monitor it closely.
Otherwise...synoptic moisture looks reasonably deep along and behind
the front across most areas Monday...with some of the mid-level
moisture a little more in-and-out, perhaps, later in the day.
There won't be a ton of synoptic forcing aloft with this...looks as
though the bulk of the forcing will be a) with the surface trough as
it moves through...and b) lakeshore/frictional convergence as things
become a little more mesoscale forced with time. Depending on how
quickly winds back Monday night into Tuesday, heaviest precip bands
may remain largely confined to the warmer coastlines...and perhaps
mitigate snow concerns to some degree. The north coast of Lake
Superior will remain a little more in the crosshairs with regard to
forcing through the event. Overlake instability looks to remain
quite good through most of the event, noting that 925mb temps
hovering between -4 and 0C should be sufficient. There are even some
signals at times for a little bit of surface-based CAPE, especially
during the morning hours, suggestive of some thunder potential
early...and then perhaps some more intense convective bands at
times. One concern with this event is continued signals for steep
lapse rates aloft, despite the weak warm advection in the low/mid-
levels...which suggests some potential for enhanced precip rates as
well. Questions remain as to how much snow will be involved during
the day...as surface temps and temps aloft may not be that
supportive of a changeover to all snow in most areas, though the
interior higher terrain will be most favored for the snow idea.
Whether it will be intense enough to support accumulations remains
unclear attm.
Synoptic moisture appears to linger right on through the remainder
of the period, perhaps only slowly drying out aloft going into
Tuesday night...which would act to decrease inversion heights and
start to turn things over to a more pure lake effect setup. North-
northwest flow to remain primary, and will look for most intense
precip bands in these traditional areas...though there is a weak
lobe of energy that may try to move in Tuesday, potentially
enhancing things for a time. Meanwhile, overlake instability will
remain sufficient...and though moisture profiles may not be quite as
deep...will anticipate continued potential of more intense precip at
times through Tuesday night, as some guidance produces signals of
low-level CAPE that could further enhance things. It looks a little
cooler for the region Tuesday, and therefore slightly more favorable
for snow. Again...whether or not it will accumulate, and if so, how
much is uncertain, as things don't look quite as favorable attm for
intense/enhanced snowfall rates...as better lapse rates aloft depart
and inversion heights begin to fall to some degree. Will still have
to monitor the usual NNW flow regions, though, as they would have
the best shots at seeing snow. What does accumulate will be heavy
and wet, which may cause some impacts regarding snow load,
particularly since a lot of trees still have leaves across interior
northern Lower...so that could be a concern when taken with the
strong wind potential.
Speaking of winds, that will be the other main concern during this
time period. Strong, occluding surface low to our east with
impending high to our west will place us under a strong pressure
gradient. Anomalously strong 850mb winds over 40kts creeping south
over the open waters of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan in
particular...areas with the most fetch/least friction...will lend

afternoon goes on. Anticipate sustained winds in the realm of 15-
25kts over land Monday into Tuesday, with over-lake winds of 25-
30kts; gusts of 40-45kts or so are possible if we can tap into those
winds at 850mb. So if we do not have winter headlines...would not be
out of the question to see some wind headlines Monday night into
Tuesday.

High Impact Weather Potential: Lingering Lake Effect into
Wednesday...
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
By Wednesday morning...pressure gradient looks to have waned
significantly...as the upper low and resultant surface cyclone
progress northeastward toward James Bay...though some additional
energy lingering on the backside of the trough may keep things from
being too quiet around here. Another niblet of energy looks to crest
the ridge toward midweek...which attm should remain largely to our
west...though it will be the energy from further north in the flow
sliding down into the region that will have more of an impact on
us. Attm...guidance is somewhat unclear on how this will evolve in
the upper levels, but signals are there for some continued surface
troughing in the region through Thursday. Things are a little bit
unclear for the end of the week into next weekend...though guidance
attm points toward a bit of a pattern shift, assuming the current
idea of energy digging into the western US holds.

A mid-level wave will depart to the east over the next several hours
taking the bulk of steadier showers across parts of northern
Michigan along with it. However, additional isolated shower
activity is possible late tonight into early Sunday morning at
northwest lower Michigan terminals. More widespread/numerous
showers return late Sunday afternoon and especially Sunday night.
Prevailing high MVFR/low VFR expected to continue to be the rule
through much of the TAF period. Southwest winds tonight become
westerly Sunday morning -- occasionally breezy at times.

Brief break in the gusty winds today. However, expect northwest
winds to quickly increase in speed tonight across Lake Michigan,
with gusty northwest to north winds continuing right through Tuesday
on all waters. Gales appear increasingly likely for northern Lake
Michigan and Whitefish Bay by later Monday through Tuesday. High end
small craft advisory conditions expected elsewhere, although would
imagine parts of northern Lake Huron will make a run at gale force
winds Monday night into Tuesday. Very wet weather also expected,
with numerous lake effect rain showers through Tuesday.
