Elongated low pressure is currently draped from eastern ND across
north-central MN into northwest WI. Full blown blizzard continues
on the cold side of this system across ND with warm/moist air
across much of the western Great Lakes into the lower-mid MS
Valley. Associated warm frontal boundary essentially bisects
northern lower Michigan this morning...expected to remain fairly
stationary through much of the day. While tranquil conditions
exist across northern Michigan attm, additional scattered shower
and thunderstorm development is expected this afternoon into
tonight prior to a cold front sweeping west to east across the
forecast area by Thursday morning.

Any severe weather chances are minimal across the area today, but
remain non-zero given the anticipation of several hundred J/kg of
MLCAPE developing this afternoon, despite any appreciable
sunshine. Bulk shear values leave quite a bit to be desired...
generally varying from 20-30 kts this afternoon/evening. None the
less, an isolated stronger storm may be capable of producing
gusty winds and hail from this afternoon into tonight as
shower/storm coverage is expected to increase pre-cold frontal
passage overnight. Certainly some locally heavy downpours possible
as well with PWs this morning already over an inch from APX's 12z
raob...progged to rise to ~1.30-1.40" this afternoon/evening...
nearing the climatological max for mid- April.

...Showers and storms possible through today and tonight...

Forecast/Synopsis: Troughing moving through the Dakotas is
supporting a ~990mb surface low moving into southern Minnesota. The
associated surface warm front extends from this across the mid-
section of Michigan, with the elevated frontal boundary reaching
north toward the tip of the mitt. Plenty of WAA and isentropic lift
to help out current convection...with prolific lightning and pea-
sized hail already reported with some of the beefier cells.

The upper level low slowly moves through the Dakotas through the
day, with a wave swinging around its southern base, up toward the
upper Great Lakes.  There looks to be a bit of a lull in showers and
storms as the front continues lifting north, eventually stalling out
near the Straits as a new surface low develops near the triple point
over Wisconsin. We'll have a few hundred Joules of MLCAPE (and  and
some steeper mid-level lapse rates once we get into the warm sector.
Better bulk shear resides north of the warm front, and a mid-level
cap in place to its south may keep convection in check through the
bulk of the day until the cold front arrives in the evening...but by
then instability will have waned. Not saying a strong storm or two
isn't possible, just not overly confident this will happen.

Overall temperatures will spike up into the mid and even upper 60s
south of the warm front, with areas north of the bridge remaining in
a comparatively chilly upper 40s.

High Impact Weather Potential: Strong gusty winds Thursday and again
Friday...

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Last 24-48 hours has seen brief shortwave troughing depart the Great
Lakes...with height rises trekking in behind it, in advance of a
deepening trough swirling eastward across the northern half of the
CONUS. Longwave troughing remains across the western US, with an
negatively tilted shortwave on the front side of the trough helping
drive surface cyclogenesis across the central US. Climatologically
strong 980mb surface low is centered over NE Iowa as of 0z/Wed with
surface warm front along the warmest side of the largely E-W
oriented BCZ extending from Iowa into the Ohio Valley, with
plentiful warm moist advection on a 40+kt southerly LLJ at 850mb. A
second surface boundary is located just north of this, along the
edge of the moisture gradient aloft, across southern Wisconsin into
lower Michigan, and a third boundary was analyzed along the cold
side of the BCZ across the UP back into the Dakotas, following the
cold BCZ into Wyoming and up through the Pacific Northwest. Surface
cold front associated with the surface low itself extends back
southwestward into the Desert Southwest along the cusp of the warmer
thermal gradient there (compared to the northern Plains), including
a second surface low in the lee of the Rockies near the OK
panhandle; a dryline extends south from central Kansas into central
TX ahead of the warmest air aloft, and behind the more moist air
aloft advecting northward off the open Gulf. Warm advection in
advance of the surface low and shortwave aloft is helping strengthen
thermal gradient to our northeast, ultimately resulting in a
strengthening of a largely zonal upper level jet max across eastern
Ontario/Quebec (up to 140kts or so as of 0z/Wed). A second niblet of
energy is also diving down along the West Coast in the back of the
trough....with ridging in the Gulf of Alaska being pinched off as
upstream troughing lifts northward across the tip of the Aleutians.

Going forward...will look for closed low aloft to deepen as it
progresses eastward...and takes on a negative tilt with time going
into Wednesday night and Thursday. Surface low will occlude over the
northern Plains/Upper Midwest, with a cold front plowing through
Michigan Wednesday night as that niblet aloft swings in Thursday
morning. As closed upper low slowly spins eastnortheastward with
time...will look for its influence to remain in place across the
Great Lakes as the surface low fills over Ontario...leaving an E-W
oriented baroclinic zone over us Friday that will drop south Friday
night as a cold front...as upstream pattern amplifies in response to
another niblet approaching the West Coast.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Strong gusty winds Thursday into
Friday...precip potential at times...

With still anomalously deep surface low to our west Thursday, will
be looking for a rather tight pressure gradient over the region,
resulting in some stronger sustained surface winds. Though strongest
pressure gradient attm looks to remain to our west/northwest, closer
to the surface low itself...should be tight enough to result in
breezy southwesterly winds over us, with some probabilistic guidance
suggesting good confidence in winds reaching 20kts through most of
the day. Pressure gradient remains somewhat tight into early Friday,
but falls apart to some extent as the surface low begins to fill to
our north.

Greater wind concern comes in the form of gustiness...as strong
subsidence/dry slot moving through early Thursday should further the
cause of downward momentum transport, along with cold advection
through the remainder of the period. Will be looking for 850mb winds
to run around 40kts or so Thursday...and as we are able to mix
deeper through the day...will be on the lookout for even stronger
winds to mix down from aloft...noting potential for 700mb winds to
run around or greater than 50kts through the rest of the period,
though depending on the exact position of the upper low, this max
may be either over us or to our south, though winds aloft could be
still be supportive of advisory criteria gusts. Some probabilistic
guidance has been consistent in suggesting a decent shot at gusts of
39kts or greater (advisory criteria) in some locations Thursday, and
perhaps again Friday, though the spread in data is a little wider
for Friday. That being said, this particular guidance does seem to
run a little high...and other probabilistic guidance is perhaps a
little less impressive looking with the latest runs (though does
still seem to indicate some moderate confidence in reaching wind
advisory criteria at times Thursday). Guidance derived soundings
also support the idea of frequent advisory level gusts, particularly
across northern Lower through much of the period, and across eastern
Upper Thursday.

Bulk of Thursday may be dry, with the dry slot aloft moving in.
Guidance derived soundings suggest the atmosphere should be quite
dry (in combination with the winds, it would be good for helping dry
things out after the rain from today/tonight...though probably not
as favorable from a fire weather standpoint). Dry idea is further
supported by rapid drop-off in deeper moisture behind the cold
front...with pwat values around 0.15-0.3 during the day generally
below normal climatologically (particularly those lower end values).
Some moisture attempts to slide back in late in the day into
Thursday night, esp. across the Tip of the Mitt and eastern Upper,
as the closed upper low meanders eastward. Looks like there could be
some low-level instability to work with, which could support a more
convective feel to precip as it moves back in...though forcing
appears unimpressive attm. Slowly falling temps aloft would support
a more frozen idea...though given the quite dry low-levels
initially, it may take some time for precip to reach the ground (if
at all?), and evaporative cooling could lead to precip starting as
snow or quickly changing over to snow Thursday evening into Thursday
night.

Moisture looks to hang around Thursday night into Friday across
northern Michigan, such that we should see a cool and dreary day
across the area as temps remain cool aloft. Periods of SW to W flow
low-level convergence in combination with a weak niblet swinging
through aloft...and 925mb temps cold enough to support overlake
instability suggest some potential for lake based convection at
times Friday, particularly across the Tip of the Mitt and eastern
Upper, nearer to the better moisture aloft (and where better
convergence should reside). May have to keep an eye out for another
uptick going into Friday night as well, with another niblet swinging
down into the region. Surface temperatures will ultimately determine
snow vs. rain...with a likely diurnal component...and some low-level
dry air may allow for evaporative cooling and a touch more
snow...but will continue to assess this going forward.

High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal attm...

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Though there is some uncertainty in the exact evolution attm...as
mentioned at the end of the short term synopsis, will be looking for
a cold front to slide southward through the region Saturday as a
niblet of energy swings through...the last vestiges of this closed
low from midweek...as upstream pattern amplifies in response to a
niblet approaching the West Coast. That being said...there remains
some uncertainty in how quickly the upstream pattern is able to boot
the upper low out. Given that it is a closed low, and they typically
tend to be slow-to-move...wouldn't surprise me if it did end up
hanging out a little longer into Sunday. Even so...as heights look
to rise across the Upper Midwest Saturday night into Sunday...will
look for a return to high pressure...at least for a time. Timing of
the next niblet (that one expected to slam into the NW US late in
the workweek) as it crosses the northern CONUS is still uncertain,
as some guidance is a bit quicker (and deeper/more consolidated)
with this feature...though does appear Monday should be somewhat
active, give or take about half a day or so. The same idea lingers
into the remainder of the extended...that is, uncertainty in
timing/placement of the next niblet as it moves into the western US.
Despite uncertainty...if this idea holds, things could be a little
more active. Just how active....? Well, we'll have to keep an eye on
guidance going forward to see how things change in the coming runs.

A warm front moving through the region will generate rounds of
showers and storms today into tonight. Widespread IFR to low end
MVFR conditions will prevail today. Some gusty winds and heavier
rainfall rates could accompany any stronger storms. Windshear
should slowly end through the rest of this morning. Winds become
increasingly gusty out of the southeast, veering more southerly at
KTVC and KMBL through the day.
