.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)

High Impact Weather Potential: Freezing rain transitioning to all
rain today, falling locally heavy in spots tonight. Icing may lead
to isolated power outages and tree damage, especially when combined
with gusty southeast winds. Rises to area rivers expected tonight
through late week.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Well-advertised low pressure currently
centered across western Iowa early this morning will slowly meander
eastward through the day today...becoming centered near Chicago this
evening and then quickly trekking northeastward to vicinity western
lower MI by 12z Thursday. Isentropically driven precipitation is
already spreading across northern lower with even a few lightning
strikes over central Lake Michigan. Deep south-southeasterly flow
will continue to advect more moisture across the forecast area
through the near-term forecast period with an eventual transition to
all rain from southwest to northeast through late this afternoon.
Waves of additional rain anticipated this evening and tonight...
perhaps leading to some minor flooding in low-lying areas and the
beginning of a rise on area rivers.

Primary Forecast Concerns: Precipitation type, timing and amounts.

The general flavor of the forecast over the past 24 hours has
largely remained the same...and continues to so with this forecast
cycle. As was alluded to above, precipitation already spreading
across northwest lower MI early this morning, falling primarily as a
mix of snow and sleet as a result of a layer of dry air sub 700 mb
and resultant evaporational cooling. Latest trends continue to
suggest initial precip type likely to continue breifly as snow/sleet
with northeastward progress through the early morning hours.
However, as the column saturates entirely, precip is expected to
continue to transition to freezing rain as a stout warm nose
centered near 850 mb develops (already occurring at MBL/TVC/CAD/
HTL). Freezing rain likely to be the dominant precipitation type
across northern lower before gradually transitioning to all rain
as temperatures slowly warm above freezing from southwest to
northeast. This is expected to occur at places like FKS/MBL/TVC
early-mid morning, HTL/GLR midday through mid-afternoon, and by
late afternoon/early evening over far northeast lower.

Eastern upper remains a little more challenging as the warm nose is
less impressive and centered higher in the column around 750 mb. As
a result, initial batch of snow across that area early this morning
likely to transition to more sleet before eventually over to
freezing rain toward late morning - midday. Surface temperatures of
course take longer to rebound as well with some potential for
freezing rain to continue into the overnight, mainly far northern
areas of north/northwest Chippewa County.

With respect to accums today, intial snow/sleet amounts still
generally range from an inch or less area-wide through mid-morning,
although some localized amounts exceeding an inch aren't out of the
question, mainly across the eastern UP and along and east of I-75 in
northern lower. Ice amounts still progged to range from 0.15 to
0.30". Most notable change is slightly upping ice amounts across
northeast lower and Chippewa County where some localized amounts of
near to just over a quarter of an inch are possible.  Certainly some
hazardous travel area-wide today with isolated power outages/tree
damage possible with occasional southeast gusts upwards of 25-30 mph
through early afternoon. Few changes to headlines: added a handful
of additional counties across northeast lower and Chippewa County
into the ice storm warning and extended Chippewa County into
tonight. Have some concern that Chippewa might need to be extended
beyond that as well -- solely dependent on how much sfc temps are
able to rise.

Brief lull in precip coverage/rates later this afternoon, but
additional widespread and locally heavy rain is expected this
evening into the overnight hours. Additional rain amounts expected
to range from around a third of an inch far southeast to
0.50 - 1.00" over the northwest lower and eastern upper. This is
expected to begin to lead to a rise in area-rivers with the
forecast crest late Thursday nearing minor flood stage on the
Manistee and Rifle rivers.

...Rain Changing to Snow as Temperatures Fall Thursday...

The surface low bottoms out between 975 and 980 mb across the Tip of
the Mitt early Thursday then pushes off to the northeast. Strong
cold air advection behind this system in combination with gusty
northwest winds and wrap around moisture will lead to blustery
conditions. Temperatures will quickly fall in the morning changing
rain over to snow showers. The snow showers will likely be enhanced
off of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan as over lake instability
increases. Areas of blowing snow will likely lead to low visibility
at times into Thursday evening. Models have finally increased qpf
amounts as was expected so will bump up snow accumulations to 1 to 3
inches by early Friday across eastern upper and northwest lower
except less than an inch in northeast lower. Perhaps a few leftover
snow showers early Friday, otherwise ridging at the surface and
aloft will lead to diminishing cloudiness during the day Friday with
chilly temperatures. Temperatures dropping into and through the 30s
Thursday. Lows Thursday night ranging from the upper teens to the
mid 20s. Highs Friday in the mid and upper 30s which is about 10
degrees below average for the date.

...More Precipitation Chances and Remaining Cool...

High pressure holds on into Friday night leading to mostly clear
skies with chilly temperatures. Increasing clouds with chances for
snow showers (perhaps mixed with rain in a few areas) Saturday as an
upper level trough traverse the region. Could see a few showers
Sunday as well but so far the model blend is void of any (later
shifts may have to add some). Remaining chilly into Monday with weak
troughing aloft staying in place. Mixed signals heading into Tuesday
with extended models varying on the timing and evolution of the next
possible bigger system next week. Overall temperatures are expected
to remain below normal through the long term.

to n overnight. A few TSRA also possible at MBL and TVC. Precip
will turn to just RA Wed morning MBL/TVC/PLN, while APN sees FZRA
into Wed afternoon before changing. Conditions lower to MVFR
toward Wed morning, and IFR to LIFR on Wednesday.

Mixed wintry precipitation will develop tonight. An initial brief
period of snow/sleet is expected to transition to freezing rain.
Occasionally gusty southeast winds are expected to accompany this
system, and when combined with icing may result in isolated power

A few rumbles of thunder are possible after 2 am in northwest
lower Michigan. Severe storms are not expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Freezing rain is expected to continue Wednesday morning before
temperatures gradually rise above freezing from southwest to
northeast across northern Michigan. Locally heavy rain is then
possible Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night before
precipitation transitions to snow Thursday through early Friday.
Periods of gusty winds are expected to continue through the
duration of this storm system.
