High Impact Weather Potential: Nothing too significant. Still
looking at some accumulating lake effect snow showers.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
First surge of true Arctic air centered across the area tonight, a
product of overhead troughing and strong Canadian originated high
pressure building southeast across the Upper Mississippi Valley. Of
course, our still relatively warm Great Lakes doing their absolute
best to modify this airmass, keeping our readings several degrees
warmer than locations upstream of the big waters. Per the usual,
that modification comes with a price, with plenty of lake clouds and
snow showers...the latter of which are impacting coastal areas of
northern lower in general north flow regime. Lake enhanced surface
troughing across southern lower Michigan sliding off to east as
overhead shortwave departs...taking the more widespread light snow
from earlier along with it.
Mid level heights will quickly rebound today, with broad mid level
ridging building overhead tonight. Attendant surface reflection/high
pressure of course leads the charge by several hours, cutting
overhead today, exiting stage right tonight.
Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:
Temperature/cloud trends and addressing lake snow potential.
Details:
Main focus today will center on lake effect snow showers, especially
this morning southwest of the Grand Traverse Bay region. Low level
trajectories become a bit more northwest this morning, punting some
of the current more organized over-water lake bands into coastal
areas, with at least a few hour window of decent trajectories into
both Manistee and Benzie counties. Perusal of convective allowing hi-
res guidance soundings show that although the lake-induced
convective layer is rather robust, there is plenty of dry air in the
top several thousand feet of that layer. Still, lake clouds will
center squarely within the dendritic growth layer, supporting some
higher end snow to liquid ratios. Could easily see a few inches of
snow in those favored areas, with some locally higher amounts indeed
possible where lake bands are more persistent. Not quite advisory
worthy, but something to definitely keep an eye on if traveling
those areas this morning. Flow becomes disorganized early this
afternoon before quickly backing southwest during the afternoon as
high pressure builds across the area. This will essentially end the
lake snow threat. Not much going for the rest of the area today,
with even quite a bit of sunshine expected across interior areas.
Gonna remain quite cold, with highs mostly in the teens. Light winds
will negate much of a wind chill component though.
Quiet conditions expected much of tonight as high pressure slowly
pulls off to the east. Conditions potentially turn a bit more
interesting toward Saturday morning as south to southwest flow
strengthens across northern Lake Michigan. Surge of mid level
moisture spreads across the north end of the lake late as well, with
guidance derived soundings showing a nearly complete erosion of any
dry wedge above a shallow lake-induced convective layer. If this dry
air erosion is as complete as some guidance suggests, could
definitely see a re-invigoration of lake-driven snow showers...with
flow trajectories targeting Schoolcraft and far western Mackinac
counties. Don't want to get too aggressive just yet, but will begin
to bump up accumulations in western Mackinac county. Otherwise,
development of southerly winds on backside of that departing high
will keep temperatures from tanking too much, with lows mostly in
the single digits.

High Impact Weather Potential...Accumulating southwest flow lake
enhanced snow into eastern Upper on Saturday. Accumulation chances
shift to the northwest flow snow belts of eastern Upper and
northwest Lower on Sunday.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...An area of low pressure will race east-
northeast from the Canadian Prairies to start the period, to far
eastern Canada by the end of the period. Gusty southwest winds ahead
of the trailing cold front should produce lake enhanced snows off
Lake Michigan into eastern Upper MI, especially over western
Mackinac County. Some accumulation is likely in this area given lake-
inversion height Delta Ts in the teens and 12-18 hours of fairly
unidirectional low-level flow. Deeper synoptic moisture appears to
be staying closer to the low track and is not likely to boost snow
totals much. Across northern Lower, precipitation should be minimal
ahead of the cold front due to less favorable over-lake trajectories
and even more meager synoptic moisture. Can't rule out some freezing
drizzle as the front pushes in Saturday night given the lack of ice
in the clouds, but this should not be significant.
The trailing cold front is expected to clear the forecast area
Saturday night into Sunday, with colder air spilling in behind it.
Winds shifting to the northwest behind the front, along with the
colder temperatures, will crank up the lake effect snow into the
northwest flow snowbelts of eastern Upper and northern Lower
Michigan. The convective depth over northern will initially be
pretty shallow (not much more than 3K ft) which should keep
accumulations down. Deeper convective depths over eastern Upper will
support better snow band development and an associated increase in
accumulation potential.
Temperatures for the weekend will moderate closer to seasonal
normals with highs mainly in the 20s.

High Impact Weather Potential...Accumulating lake effect snow threat
persists in the northwest flow snow belts of northwest Lower and
eastern Upper Michigan into Monday night. Cold temperatures/wind
chills into Tuesday.
A cold air mass remains in place into Tuesday, supporting highs
struggling into the teens and and single digit or sub-zero lows.
Wind chill values will be below zero for much of the Sunday night-
Tuesday time period. This cold air will continue to support lake
effect snow in the snow belt areas of northwest Lower and eastern
Upper MI. The very cold air does not support large snow flake
development, which will help to keep potential snow accumulation
lower. However, the gusty winds and small flakes are likely to cause
significantly reduced visibilities at times into Tuesday.
Rising upper-level heights, as well periods of southerly low-level
flow, will have temperatures returning closer to normal for
Wednesday and Thursday. At least a couple clipper systems are
forecast to track through the general area from Tuesday night into
Thursday. None of these systems look significant at this time, and
there is still considerable model spread in the details. These
potential systems will need to be monitored closely over the next
few days.

Low pressure currently centered over Central Lower Michigan will
slide into the Eastern Great Lakes overnight...and upstream high
pressure centered over the Plains builds into the Western Great
Lakes region on Friday. Northerly flow lake effect snow showers
will persist overnight into Friday despite a gradual increase in
subsidence and an overall decrease in low level moisture. Overall
conditions will remain MVFR/low VFR thru the 24 hours forecast
period... with IFR vsbys overnight for those areas impacted by
ongoing lake effect snow showers. Generally light northerly flow
surface winds will become NW at 5 to 10 kts on Friday as the ridge
axis approaches our area.
