.NEAR TERM...(Today through Tonight)
Issued at 359 AM EDT Tue Mar 22 2022
...Messy weather arrives tonight...
High Impact Weather Potential...Moderate. Wide variety of precip
types late tonight as moderate/heavy precip moves in.
High pressure extends from Hudson Bay, down toward Lk Huron and
the eastern lakes. This is a source of chilly/dry low-level air,
with plenty of surface dew points in single digits north of Huron.
1001mb low pressure is along the KS/OK border. This low moves
relatively slowly ne, reaching northern IL by Wed morning. All
sorts of associated synoptic precip and deep convection; a
typically busy spring system. In our immediate area, a leftover
f-gen band continues to slowly deteriorate, but is still producing
light rain/snow from northern Leelanau Co down toward Grayling
and Tawas.
For today, the ongoing precip should continue to slowly fizzle out
early this morning, as much stronger forcing to our sw overwhelms
the subtler lingering f-gen aloft. Some residual sprinkles/
flurries remain possible into the morning. Much of today will be
relatively quiet, with increasing high and mid clouds. Toward 4-5
pm, rain chances will start to push into sw portions of the area
(MBL/CAD/Frankfort). Being at the warm part of the diurnal cycle,
and with a downsloping east wind, precip will be liquid.
Max temps today from the upper 30s eastern upper MI, to the upper
40s at MBL.
Tonight, deep isentropic ascent massively ramps up. Deep southerly
flow develops, ahead of the surface low and a 500mb low center in
the central/northern plains, opening up the Gulf. Precip will
develop northward and become heavier, especially overnight. There
is antecedent dry air in place, and additional cool/dry air
feeding in a low levels from the east. Do not expect measurable
precip to make it all the way to the Sault by Wed morning, though
it should make some inroads north of the Bridge (especially in
western Chip/Mack Cos). Most/all of northern lower MI should see
precip by 12z. Heavier precip will be supported overnight, as
0-6km southerly mean winds of 50kt punch into southern lower MI.
06-12Z QPF amounts of around 0.50" will be common south of M-72,
as well as further north near Lake MI.
P-type will be a serious challenge. Evap cooling with a cool/dry
east breeze will cool our airmass a good amount, even after a mild
day. Though most precip should be liquid at 8 pm, by midnight a
growing area of sloppy -SN will develop over n central lower MI
(Mio- GLR) up into part of eastern upper, ahead of the warm nose
aloft. This eventually gets displaced into just far northern
lower/eastern upper MI, as warmer air aloft arrives in the
900-800mb layer. Eventually, up to 2" of snowfall is expected
tonight in a swath from much of the eastern UP, down thru
PLN/APN/GLR/Mio. There is small area of snow accums closer to 3"
in far western Mackinac Co, west of Naubinway.
The incoming warm nose allows a transition to PL and then RA
overnight in most of northern lower MI. We are very much riding a
knifes edge tonight with regards to FZRA. It takes only a very
small change to the T forecast to get a drastically icier forecast
(or one without any ice at all). Nw lower, especially off the
higher terrain, should be safe, with strengthening downsloping.
For CAD and eastward, and especially for HTL/Grayling/W Branch/
Mio, FZRA is at least a potential hazard. Guidance generally
allows temps to slowly rise at the above locations overnight, with
a surface wind out of 090 (would prefer some sort of southerly
component), and with increasing precip coverage and rates. That
warming will win eventually, but it needs to do so quickly.
Will have localized ice amounts up to 0.20" for that HTL-Mio area
mentioned above. Much smaller amounts elsewhere in northern lower
MI. Will not be issuing any advisories at this time; do not want
to tie later shifts down in a forecast that could still go a few
different directions.
Min temps tonight near 30f to the mid 30s.

.SHORT TERM...(Wednesday through Thursday)
Issued at 359 AM EDT Tue Mar 22 2022
High Impact Weather Potential: Messy precip situation through the
period, along with brisk easterly winds...
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
Last 24-48 hours has seen the first longwave trough axis depart,
with broader longwave ridging building eastward through the Upper
Midwest...in advance of -2 standard deviation troughing digging
across the southern Plains (resulting in severe weather across Texas
last evening) associated with some decent height falls in this
vicinity. This is seen pretty plainly on water vapor imagery as a
broad swirl/stereotypical comma-head, with dry slotting punching up
into the central Plains behind a broad area of upward motion and
significant warm/moist advection northward into the Mid-Mississippi
Valley; more convective feel back to the southwest of there.
Longwave trough axis, denoted by a strand of subsidence on water
vapor imagery, extends northward into the central Canadian
Prairies...but northern stream portion of the flow is a bit quicker
than the southern stream...with a vort max lifting across the
Northern Plains as of 0z last night. See a couple little niblets
here on WV imagery...aforementioned one in the Northern Plains, and
a second one slowly spinning its way across central Saskatchewan,
beneath a closed low there. Upstream...anomalous ridging (+2 s.d.)
is building eastward into western North America...as positively
tilted troughing across the Gulf of Alaska takes on a more neutral
tilt, ahead of another ridge and shortwave trough just upstream of
it (next upstream shortwave/closed low is resulting in a
strengthening of the east Asian jet over Japan). Upper level jet max
punching into the western US along the cusp of the ridge is
120+kts...with downstream jet maxes rounding the base of the
southern Plains troughing (100+kts, apparent as the dry slot on WV
imagery; do note a screaming 80+kt LLJ at 850 in this area as well),
and a WNW-ESE oriented jet max along the BCZ across Michigan last
evening strengthening to 120+kts just to our south by 0z, just south
of deformation band of precip across the M-55/M-72 corridors from
yesterday.
Surface pattern has a low in central Minnesota as of 0z, with WNW-
ESE oriented stationary boundary extending to near Toledo...as
southern extent of Hudson Bay surface high pressure oozes into
northern Michigan (dry-low-level air from which helped lead to
evaporative cooling and snow on the north side of the deformation
band yesterday afternoon), becoming more cold frontal as the
boundary along the BCZ aloft continues into the Mid-Atlantic region.
Surface troughing extends northward from Minnesota low up to low
associated with the vort max in Saskatchewan...and a surface cold
front extends largely southwestward from Minnesota back into the
Texas Panhandle and Desert Southwest, along the cool side of the BCZ
aloft associated with the troughing. A couple of secondary surface
lows have developed across central Texas and Oklahoma, with warm
frontal signals extending southeastward to the Gulf, ahead of better
warm and moist advection there.
Going forward...will look for slow eastward progression of the
southern stream feature over the central Plains. Current look (at
least in operational/deterministic guidance) is for northern stream
of the flow to become stalled out to some degree by downstream
ridging, ultimately becoming shunted northward...as upstream flow
across western Canada moves inland and becomes more positively
tilted with time ahead of troughing strengthening/holding firm in
the Gulf of Alaska. This also appears to try to close off the upper
low for a time over the Upper Midwest...and ultimately, Great Lakes,
as the feature meanders eastward...with some ridging holding on just
to our north. There is still some uncertainty in the details
attm...particularly, relating to the exact track of the surface low
and positions of boundaries, which will play a crucial role in p-
type forecasting with this system. Going into the end of the short
term...ridging currently upstream of Gulf of Alaska looks to get
shunted northward as well...setting up a ridge axis from north of
Alaska down along the West Coast, as niblets of energy pass through
central Canada. (Hold this thought for the long term discussion.)
Primary Forecast Concerns: Winds Wednesday...precipitation type
issues through the period (it's still gross)...
Screaming warm-conveyor LLJ of 60kts or better at 850mb looks to
remain in play ahead of the surface low, and should be lifting
northward through the area Wednesday morning. Whether we are able to
mix that down is somewhat uncertain, given there will be quite a
warm nose aloft with this system...but even so...925mb winds should
be in the realm of 40-50kts, which would be a bit easier to mix
down. 1000mb geostrophic winds support the idea of sustained winds
of at least 15-20+kts across northern Lower; these should be
easterly, as we'd expect on the north side of a surface low, with
surface high pressure holding on to our northeast. Depending on just
how tight the pressure gradient is between these two features, winds
could be a touch stronger. Additionally...will expect strong winds
through the Straits, given channeling of east winds. As the surface
low passes across Michigan through the period, and begins to fill,
will look for winds to diminish as well...though strongest winds
should last through much of the day Wednesday, and perhaps into part
of Wednesday night.
Precipitation should be ongoing at the start of the forecast period
Wednesday morning. Given left exit jet dynamics and isentropic
ascent, in combination with potential for some fgen along the warm
front lifting northward into the area ahead of the system Wednesday
morning, weaker stability moving in with the system, and abundant
moisture (pwats still progged to approach 0.75", which is
anomalously high for this time of year)... it's gonna precip. Just
what kind of precip is the question. Surface temperatures will play
a crucial role in this for obvious reasons...given warm nose aloft.
Attm...greatest confidence in surface temperature forecast will be
across the eastern UP, where deterministic guidance aligns
reasonably well with its ensemble mean...and there is not a ton of
spread (though there is a little play, which in this kind of
scenario could be the difference between snow and rain/ice). Lesser
confidence exists further south, largely related to the position of
the warm front...with deterministic guidance still running on the
cooler side of things across interior northern Lower. Not gonna
lie...yesterday afternoon's evaporative cooling event is biasing me
a little toward the colder and drier deterministic guidance...
though the downside to that idea is that warm advection will be much
stronger than yesterday, particularly as the surface low approaches
and begins to cross the state Wednesday night into Thursday
(potentially crossing northern Lower?). Would not be surprised if we
did end up with a little cooler environment than perhaps we are
anticipating to start with Wednesday morning, though...and do note
latest blend/consensus guidance suggests a cooler high overall on
Wednesday across eastern Upper and NE Lower than yesterday
afternoon's forecast package. All this being said...guidance derived
soundings still signal a warm nose aloft Wednesday morning with
cooler low-levels across northern Lower. Interior northern Lower and
particularly northeast Lower will be at highest risk of icing/sleet
potential, given the greater potential for a warm enough nose aloft
and sufficiently cold/dry enough low-levels to promote complete
melting aloft and lesser re-freezing below (dependent on surface
temperature). Eastern Upper, on the other hand, generally looks more
snowy...with a cooler thermal profile overall Wednesday, though it
wouldn't be out of the question to be a little more mixy at times.
As we go forward through the day, and the surface low approaches,
would look for things to turn over to more rain across northern
Lower and get a little mixier/icier(?) across eastern Upper as the
BCZ (and subsequently, warmer air aloft) lifts in. Additionally,
wouldn't be out of the question to hear a rumble of thunder at times
Wednesday/Wednesday night in the warm sector of the system, with
some mid-level drier air attempting to poke in above saturated lower
levels in the presence of some lifting.
Additionally, similar to yesterday...suspect low-level dry air will
play a critical role as well. Still looks as though high pressure
will still be near Hudson Bay (albeit slightly shifted eastward by
Wednesday morning), which suggests continued advection of cooler and
somewhat drier low-level air out of Canada, on strengthening
easterly low-level winds...though I'm not sure if the high pressure
will be able to have as much of an impact as it did yesterday. This
setup isn't particularly too far off from a stereotypical freezing
rain scenario, though tweaked about 45 degrees clockwise...and it
otherwise lends to potential for evaporative cooling, which suggests
there could be a change from liquid to solid precip...though this
may depend on how much cooling of the thermal profile occurs. Worth
noting that we should maintain largely easterly low-level flow
through the bulk of the short term, particularly across the eastern
UP...where there are some decent signals for a somewhat anomalous
easterly component to the flow at 850mb (this is also present into
the Tip of the Mitt as well), suggesting we should keep somewhat
cooler and perhaps drier air in play for a time...though will look
for the low-levels to eventually moisten up enough to take
evaporative cooling out of the equation.
Large-scale forcing should be waning Thursday into Thursday
night...though good deep moisture should linger right on through the
remainder of the short term, as this system will be slow to depart.
Trough axis associated with the surface low looks like it should be
just enough to support continued precip into Thursday...and with
cooling temps aloft with time...would look for things to eventually
transition to snow. Depending on how quickly mid-level moisture
strips out, could be looking at some freezing drizzle crud on
Thursday night, but not entirely convinced attm and will leave it
out of the forecast for now.
&&
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)
Issued at 359 AM EDT Tue Mar 22 2022
High Impact Weather Potential: Minimal attm...
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:
Okay, you can stop holding that thought now... with ridging getting
shunted northward into the Arctic Circle above Alaska later in the
week...will look for troughing currently over the north pole to
become displaces southward with time going into the weekend.
Additionally...longwave ridge axis along the west coast will help
direct this troughing southward into the central Plains/Upper
Midwest...though attm, signals aren't overly impressive for a
massive cold air outbreak...just cold enough to be rather chilly for
this time of year. Worth noting that ridging north of Alaska doesn't
cling too hard to ridging across the western US...and see some
signals for southern stream ridging across the western US to shift
eastward with time going into the weekend...which, if it comes to
fruition, would block the cold air intrusion from getting too deeply
entrenched over the Great Lakes. Even so...a niblet of energy
trekking through the flow across central Canada Thursday night into
Friday should help support lingering upper level troughiness over
the Great Lakes going into the weekend. The upper level pattern
beyond the weekend looks much more uncertain attm, though perhaps a
little zonal across the bulk of the country, with some baroclinic
zones to play with...and maybe another closed low moving toward the
West Coast. We'll see.

Issued at 1152 PM EDT Mon Mar 21 2022
Any lingering rain showers likely to diminish overnight with VFR
conditions expected to prevail through much of the day Tuesday.
However, attention quickly turns to approaching low pressure from
the southwest, which are expected to bring additional periods of
rain during the evening into Tuesday night, along with eventual
lowering cigs and LLWS. East-southwest winds in advance of this
system are expected to become occasionally gusty early Tuesday
through the remainder of the TAF period.
