...Another shot (the last?) of Arctic air arrives tonight...

High Impact Weather Potential: Gusty northwest winds to bring much
colder temperatures and lake effect snows. Some hazardous travel is
expected.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast:

Frontogenetical forcing...tied to elongated upper jet
core...bringing widespread light snow to much of southern and
central lower Michigan, with some of this snow clipping our far
southeast areas. Otherwise, a dry and seasonably chilly night across
the Northwoods, with much of the area making a run into the single
digits early this morning.

Main focus of interest for our weather to end this week on into the
beginning of the weekend is strong shortwave trough seen digging
southeast into western Ontario and northwest Minnesota. This wave
will continue to amplify as it cuts across our area tonight. Surge
of modified late season Arctic air will accompany this wave,
bringing well below normal temperatures and periods of wind-driven
snow showers today through Saturday.

Primary Forecast Concerns/Challenges:

Cloud/temperature trends and addressing snow shower evolution and
attendant amounts/possible headline considerations.

Details:

Any lingering light snow across our southeast will end this morning,
with attention then turning to the approaching wave and maturing
cold front out ahead of it. Expect a band of at least broken snow
showers to accompany this front as it crosses the area this
afternoon. Pre-frontal environment remains cold enough for some lake
moisture contribution to bring a bit of enhanced snows off northern
Lake Michigan into western Mackinac county, but limited duration of
this enhancement should keep accumulations minimal. Otherwise,
looking at generally sub-inch amounts with the front for most of the
area, with perhaps locally heavier amounts across eastern upper
Michigan via that lake enhancement. Increasingly gusty southwest
winds will likely bring some blowing/drifting snow, especially
across US-2 west of the bridge as those winds pick up snow off the
northern Lake Michigan ice pack.

Shortwave trough digs right across the area tonight, bringing that
modified Arctic air along with it. Lake effect takes center stage as
H8 temperatures dip to near/below -20C, setting up a phenomenal over-
water thermal gradient. Perusal of convective allowing hi-res
guidance soundings definitely show decent conditions for lake snows,
with lake induced convective depths nearing/exceeding 10kft.
Synoptic moisture contribution is not particularly impressive,
especially across northern Lake Michigan...and flake size may begin
to suffer as lake clouds begin to fall out of the dendritic growth
layer (too cold). Still, snow showers will be fairly widespread, and
at times likely intense...especially so into our eastern upper
Michigan tradition snowbelts. Initial west flow veers northwest
overnight, helping "fan" the snow showers around, limiting
persistence of any heavier snows at any one location. Good first
"guess" for snow amounts tonight is 2 to 4 inches (locally higher of
course) across northwest Chippewa County, with an inch or two in
parts of northwest lower Michigan. Gusty northwest winds will bring
some blowing snow to those more open and exposed areas. While no
doubt some hazardous travel will occur, just not seeing high enough
impacts to support any winter weather headlines...at least yet.

Expect temperatures today to reach up into the upper 20s and lower
30s, and lows tonight in the single digits and teens. Those gusty
winds will make it feel significantly colder of course, with wind
chills by Saturday morning reaching the negative single digits for
much of the area. Winter is not quite done...yet.

...Accumulating snow chances this weekend...

High Impact Weather Potential: Light lake effect continues into
Saturday afternoon with additional accumulations expected on Sunday.

Pattern Synopsis:

Impressive troughing stretching over the Great Lakes and Mississippi
Valley will quickly lift across the east coast Saturday night into
Sunday, providing very strong forcing aloft to rapidly deepen a
cyclone down near 970 mb by the time it crosses from the New England
states into far eastern Canada. Behind this trough, an intensifying
jet max will punch into the Great Lakes by Sunday morning. A weak
clipper induced by this forcing is expected to slide across the
state during the day Sunday.

Forecast/Details:

Lake effect snow is expected to be ongoing at the start of the
period across parts of northwest lower and eastern upper Michigan.
Northwest low-level flow will continue cold advection into the
afternoon Saturday ahead of ridging that moves in by the evening,
which will work to veer winds and cut off lake effect chances with
dry air. Additional accumulations around 1" or more will be possible
with any organized lake effect bands that sustain themselves into
the afternoon Saturday. However, most areas will see less than an
inch of additional snow.

After a short break in precip chances, the next round of snow will
return to northern Michigan Sunday morning and last into Sunday
evening as the aforementioned clipper slides across the region.
Initial profiles are expected to contain a several thousand foot
isothermal layer marginally within the DGZ, which will help promote
larger flake sizes to start before strong southwest winds warm the
profile. That being said, most of the area will see accumulations
near 1" or less while those across western Mackinac county and along
the Lake Michigan shoreline of the lower peninsula could see a few
inches due to lake enhancement with these southwest winds. Wind
gusts of 25-35+ mph will produce blowing and drifting of fresh
snowfall, greatly reducing visibility at times and producing
hazardous travel conditions through the morning and early afternoon.

High Impact Weather Potential: Low for now

Mainly zonal upper-level flow is anticipated through next week over
the Great Lakes with no major systems expected to impact the region.
The main focus of the long term will be temperatures warming well
above average by the middle of the week to give northern Michigan
its first taste of spring. Highs in the 30s and 40s are in store
Monday and Tuesday before getting into the 50s across most areas
south of the bridge Wednesday and Thursday. This will lead to
considerable snowmelt across northern Michigan heading into next
weekend.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night)

A trough axis stretched thru the Ohio Valley will continue to
produce a broken area of light snow north of the trough axis overnight.
Vast majority of this precip will remain south of our Northern
Lower Michigan TAF sites...resulting only in an increase in VFR
cigs overnight into Friday morning. A fast-moving clipper system
will track just north of Lake Superior on Friday. This system will
produce some light synoptic snow across Northern Lower Michigan
Friday afternoon into Friday evening. Conditions will remain
generally low VFR despite increasing chances of light snow Friday
afternoon/evening. Surface winds will remain light/variable
overnight into Friday morning...and then become SW and strengthen
to 10 to 20 kts by midday Friday. Winds will then shift to the
west and further strengthen to 15 to 25 kts Friday afternoon as
the associated cold front from the clipper system sweeps thru our
region.

approaching/passing cold front today...then gusty northwest winds
