...Gradually Improving Conditions Today...

High Impact Weather Potential...Gusty winds producing blowing snow
and reduced visibility into this afternoon. Minor additional snow
accumulation through the morning, but this will add to visibility
reduction caused by gusty winds.

Pattern Synopsis/Forecast...Potent clipper system and main cold
front has cleared the forecast area to the east. However, a
secondary cold front is currently sinking south through the UP. This
front is forecast to clear the area by afternoon, with upper-level
and surface ridging building across the western Great Lakes in its
wake.

The strongest winds with this system have already been realized,
with most locations seeing their highest gusts immediately behind
the lead cold front with the strongest CAA/downward momentum
transport and surface pressure rise/fall couplet. That being said,
the surface pressure gradient is still pretty tight, with mixing
heights extending from the surface up to 5-6k feet. This scenario
still supports surface wind gusts over 30 mph through the morning
before they diminish more significantly. These gusty winds will
continue to cause some blowing and drifting snow through the
morning.

A flare up of snow is currently falling across parts of northern
Lower MI associated with an impulse within the departing upper-level
wave driving the clipper. This feature should depart within the next
few hours, so do not expect much snow accumulation with it. Behind
this feature, more pure lake effect banding is evident in the
northwest flow heading back into Lake Superior. One fairly
significant band is crossing Luce and western Mackinac counties, and
starting to extend into the Tip of the Mitt. This feature has been
suggested the high-resolution guidance for a couple days now and
will likely produce light snow accumulation this morning. Changing
low-level winds, especially as the ridging gets closer this
afternoon should help keep any one area from seeing too much
accumulation before the band falls apart.

As far as winter storm headlines are concerned, plan to keep current
headlines in place to their scheduled expiration time of 7 am this
morning. Will follow the areas of eastern Upper and northwest Lower
where the warning currently exists with an advisory through 1 pm
this afternoon. This is the area where the developing lake banding
is most favored to produce accumulation.

After a brief period quieter weather this afternoon into this
evening, another clipper will approach by late tonight. This
approaching system will increase winds once again out of the
southwest, with snow chances returning to eastern Upper by Sunday
morning.

.SHORT TERM...(Sunday through Monday)

...Strong winds/blowing snow potential Sunday morning...

High Impact Weather Potential: Strong southwest wind gusts of 35-45+
mph will create blowing snow concerns, especially along US-2 near
the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Pattern Synopsis:

Westerly upper-level flow will be in place over the region as an
embedded jet max slides overhead by Sunday afternoon. Ascent
provided by this feature will drive a weak surface pressure response
along a cold front stretching from Hudson Bay back into the northern
Great Plains. This system will pass to our north as this front
eventually sags south across northern Michigan Sunday night. A
shortwave progressing over the southern Great Plains will begin to
drive cyclogenesis along this front far to our southwest on Monday.

Forecast/Details:

Snow may be ongoing across parts of eastern upper Sunday morning is
association with the aforementioned clipper passing to our north.
The chance for snow will last through much of the day, but
additional accumulations are expected to remain around 1" for most
north of the bridge. The main concern on Sunday will be strong wind
gusts through the morning and afternoon across the area. Wind gusts
of 35-45+ mph are expected on Sunday with the potential for
occasional gusts in excess of 50 mph over the nearshore waters and
along the immediate shoreline of Lake Michigan. With recent
snowfall, this could bring blowing snow concerns to parts of the
area -- even in areas where there will be no additional snow. The
most problematic area will likely be along US-2 in western Mackinac
county. Strong southwest winds will have a long, unimpeded fetch
across the ice-covered surface of northern Lake Michigan where
several inches of snow has recently fallen. While there is some
uncertainty in regards to the degree of impacts experienced across
this area, travel along US-2 may become very difficult for several
hours Sunday morning with blowing and drifting snow and rapid drops
in visibility -- especially across sections that are open to Lake
Michigan and not protected by trees. The worst blowing snow impacts
across all parts of northern Michigan are expected in the morning
and should lessen with time into the afternoon as temperatures warm
through the day and the snowpack begins to condense/melt. Afternoon
highs well into the 30s are expected on Sunday before the frontal
passage Sunday night. This will drop temperatures back into the
teens and low 20s for Monday. Snow chances will return to northern
Michigan Monday evening, but will reserve further discussion of the
next system for the long term period as this is where the bulk of
impacts are anticipated.

High Impact Weather Potential: Accumulating snow and mixed precip
potential Monday night - Wednesday.

Longwave troughing will continue to sit over the western CONUS
through the first half of the week as a low-amplitude shortwave/jet
streak embedded in the main flow pivots from the southern Great
Plains and into the Great Lakes by Tuesday night. Favorable upper-
level ascent along a boundary stretching across the region will
support a cyclone that will bring winter weather impacts to the
Great Lakes from Monday night into Wednesday. The position of this
boundary will have a big impact on which areas see mostly snow as
opposed to sleet or freezing rain heading into the middle of the
week. Regardless, the best chance for several inches of additional
snowfall early this week appears to be across the northern half of
the CWA with decreasing chances for several inches of snow -- and
increasing chances for sleet/freezing rain -- with southward extent
across northern lower. Forecast details will become more clear
through the weekend as this current system departs the region.
Otherwise, the chance for snow may return to northern Michigan by
the end of the week. Forecast highs in the upper teens and low 20s
for most of the week will be 5-10 degrees cooler than late-February
averages.
