Just a quick update to account for a bit of lingering lake effect
nonsense...mainly flurries. Winds shift from westerly to
southwesterly through the day then southerly this evening into
tonight. Over lake instability wanes through that time but there
should be enough for more flurries into this afternoon. Meanwhile,
increasing mid/high level clouds well in advance of the expected
impactful system will cloud skies up from APN to Saginaw Bay where
there has been sunshine this morning. Chilly with highs only
ranging from the upper teens to mid 20s.

High Impact Weather Potential...1-3" snow eastern upper MI
tonight.
Happy first day of winter (officially at 448 pm). The sun angle
and length of day will both start increasing tomorrow...not that
it will do us a whole lot of good. But in one sense, winter does
begin to end after today.
1016mb low pressure is near the southern tip of James Bay. High
pressure extends from southern Manitoba to eastern IA. In between,
cold advection continues on westerly low-level flow. Lake effect
snow has seen an uptick in intensity in far northern lower MI
since late evening, and the pre-dawn forecast has already been
updated for higher pops and small/fluffy accums. Stronger banding
is present on se Superior, slowly migrating southward as winds
veer a touch. These bands will be encroaching on Whitefish Pt
shortly.
Reasonably strong but transient lake effect bands will make some
inroads into far nw Chippewa Co early this morning. This thanks to
winds temporarily veering wnw. But by midday, 1000-850mb winds
will both back west again, and weaken below 15kt. Superior bands
will weaken and push back offshore. 1-3" of morning snowfall are
possible near and north of Paradise. In northern lower MI, snow
bands aren't quite as extensive/intense as they were a couple of
hours ago. A more abrupt decreasing trend in -SHSN is expected
after daybreak, as backing 1000-850mb flow and associated warm
advection reduce instability. Mostly cloudy skies will expand
across the area (even the se), as a lowering inversion will trap
low-level moisture and allow lower clouds downstate to advance
ne-ward. In addition, mid and high clouds will be increasing this
afternoon ahead of our next shortwave.
Tonight...let the big system sort of kind of begin. An upper low
migrates from s central Canada into ND. Ahead of this, an inverted
trof develops and sharpens, with surface lows starting to close
off in WI and/or IL by morning. Deep southerly flow will be
increasing, but for much of northern MI this air is initially
somewhat dry. However, a leftover frontal boundary over upper MI,
and added low-level moisture from the southerly winds off Lakes
MI/Huron, will result in favorable moisture present there. Expect
widespread -SHSN to expand across eastern upper MI, especially
overnight, with enhancement off of both of the big lakes. 1-3" of
snow expected, mostly overnight. Chances of snow showers will
gradually expand into nw, n central, and far ne lower MI during
the night (excepting se sections). Emmet-Cheboygan Cos could pick
up an inch, but have less than that elsewhere.
Chilly max temps today, upper teens to mid 20s. Temps will fall
only a few degrees this evening, with rising temps overnight.

...The Big One...
High Impact Weather Potential...Snow possibly heavy at times. Winds
will be strong with frequent wind gusts and drifting snow.
Pattern Synopsis/Forecast and Possible Impacts...Thursday, the 500
mb trough in the middle of the country is developing the sfc low
near the Red River with the inverted sfc trough extending into the
Upper Great Lakes. The precipitation moves into the forecast area,
from the west as the trough begins to move from the forcing with the
500 mb trough, which is beginning to tilt negatively and dig the
trough into Illinois. The models disagree on the placement a bit,
but it seems to not matter for the outcome. By 12z/Friday, the sfc
low moves up to roughly near OSC(GFS), CWLS (ECMWF) and CWGD (CMC).
So the CMC is about Halfway between the GFS idea and the ECMWF. The
GFS is the warmer of the 3 solutions, and looks like there's a
chance of a mix in NE Lower, but feel that the more consistent ECMWF
is probably on the right track with the heavy, wet snow, just before
the cooler air and the drier snow gets into the region Friday.
Friday, Colder air moves in and begins the transition to drier snow.
the interesting idea floated by the GFS now is the meandering sfc
low that deepens and hangs around Saginaw Bay before jumping the
center to near Ottawa, just like the ECMWF by 00z/Sat. The CMC has a
similar track and strength as the ECMWF which means...All of the
models show a strong pressure gradient over the region which is
likely to produce strong winds, blowing and drifting with the snow
that is falling with the colder temperatures. This looks to last
through the night. This will be the day to watch as the snow piles
up and the wind gets very gusty. The wind speeds are expected reach
an 80% confidence (in Gaylord) of exceeding 40 mph, and over 40% of
gusting over 50 mph overnight. Lots of blowing and drifting with the
amount of snow for 12z/Fri-12z/Sat (10-15 inches along the M-32
corridor). Shut roads from extreme drifting is likely, with this
thought. I'm old enough to remember the blizzard of Jan, 1978, and
the Blizzard of Jan, 1979 growing up downstate. The Sfc Pressure
with this storm is almost as deep as both of them. We had major
highways and secondary roads shut for days. This could be an
equivalent. It definitely looks like it could surpass the Feb 2019
storm with the drifting as well.
.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

High Impact Weather Potential...Big wind. With all of the snow on
the ground from the storm and the LES after it whiteouts and major
drifting may continue into Sunday/Monday.
Extended (Saturday through Tuesday)...
Saturday, Winds, 850 mb temperatures (-15c to -18c) and moisture
(90% in in the cloud layer) will continue into Saturday evening.
All three models continue the moisture over the region, Christmas
morning. The trough is through, so the winds are WNW (GFS) to NW
(ECMWF/CMC)through the 24 hours. So the lake effect will continue
into Christmas morning. However, think that there will be a lot of
clean up needed as the winds begin to subside. However, with the LES
expected going into Monday the reaction to clean up may be slow.
Christmas day, it looks like lake effect bands will continue into
the region. The three models continue the WNW to NW idea with 850 mb
temperatures around -15c and moisture in the cloud layer (850-
700mb), although it is beginning to wane. However, the condtions
continue into Monday morning. Monday, The wind direction is all over
the place, with the temperatures just cold enough for instability.
So the LES should begin to diminish and will change into some other
flow pattern other than the two best flow patterns (WNW and NW).
Tuesday, ECMWF drops another 500 mb low into the Upper Great Lakes,
while the GFS has a progressive trough. The low could produce more
than the 500 mb trough, but will go with the NBM idea with chance
and slight chance dropping in. E Upper could have the better snow in
either case and N Lower could miss out on the snow (GFS) or get some
(ECMWF).

impossible air travel.
