AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Albany NY
1256 PM EST Sun Jan 9 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Freezing rain and sleet will taper to spotty drizzle or
freezing drizzle this afternoon, and may change to snow showers
for the Adirondacks. Treacherous travel conditions will linger
through the afternoon on untreated ground surfaces. Then, a
cold front arriving this evening will bring colder and blustery
conditions along with bands of lake effect snow. A secondary
cold front will usher in a frigid air mass into the region
Monday night with well below normal temperatures lasting until
the middle of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for eastern New York
and adjacent western New England until 7 PM EST today...

Winter Storm Watch for Lake Effect snow is in effect for
Herkimer County from 10 PM tonight through 10 PM Monday...

UPDATE...As of 1245 PM EST, steadier precipitation was shifting
east into western New England, with only spotty drizzle/freezing
drizzle lingering behind this, as stronger forcing now shifts
east of the region.

Surface temps should begin to slowly rise, as wet bulb cooling
processes diminish as steadier precipitation tapers off. Many
areas should rise into the lower/mid 30s by late afternoon.
However, despite temps rising above the freezing mark, untreated
ground surfaces will likely continue to be treacherous and ice
covered, therefore will keep all advisories ongoing at this
time.

As some deeper clouds begin overspreading the SW Adirondacks
later this afternoon, the return of ice nuclei in the clouds
along with further cooling aloft should allow for snow showers
to develop, with some coatings to up to one inch possible by
sunset, mainly across northern Herkimer/northwest Hamilton
Counties.

Brisk south/southeast winds may still gust up to 25-35 mph early
this afternoon, before diminishing slightly by late afternoon.

Previous discussions/update follow...

UPDATE...As of 950 AM EST, mainly freezing rain occurring across
the region, with just occasional sleet reported, mostly earlier
when the precipitation started, and also across portions of
southern VT. Distinct warm nose observed on the 12Z/ALY
sounding, around 3.5 to 4C around H800, with a strong cold layer
beneath (around -7C around H975). This followed very closely to
what the 12Z/08 NAM portrayed yesterday, with yet another
"success" of the NAM handling/forecasting elevated warm layers
quite well.

The current RAP 13 also seems to be indicating this current warm
nose and resulting widespread nature of the freezing rain thus
far. Based on the latest RAP13/NAM, it does seem that the
elevated warm layer should start to cool across northern areas
over the next few hours, so expect current light/moderate
freezing rain across the Mohawk Valley and southwest Adirondacks
to mix back with sleet, and eventually change over to
snow/sleet before tapering off by early afternoon. This may
leave a coating to up to an inch of snow/sleet in some of these
areas.

Elsewhere, mainly freezing rain still expected through noon,
before precipitation tapers off and becomes more spotty.
Precipitation may change back to snow as far south as the
Saratoga region and portions of southern VT this afternoon.

Temps will only slowly rise into the upper 20s to lower/mid 30s
for this afternoon. South winds will remain quite strong/gusty
through late morning, with some gusts of 30-35 mph remaining
possible within north/south oriented valleys, including within
the immediate Capital Region.

Previous discussion follows...

Wintry mix has already spread into much of eastern New York this
morning with reports of freezing rain and "unknown precipitation"
(likely sleet) from ASOS stations in the area. Radar
reflectivity is rather strong with 25 to 35 dBz showing up on
the ENX radar but sufficient dry air in the mid and low levels
has limited overall precipitation amounts at the surface to
just a few hundredths at NYS mesonet sites. However, with
temperatures throughout the region in the 20s, freezing rain
will quickly result in dangerous travel conditions on any
untreated roads or sidewalks. Therefore, avoid unnecessary
travel this morning. Forecast soundings in the Mohawk Valley and
Saratoga Lake George region and even parts of the Capital
Region show the cold air wedge will remain anchored at the
surface up to about 2500 - 3000ft which could support some sleet
as well as freezing rain through at least mid- morning. Any
sleet accumulations should be minimal with amounts generally
under an inch. Freezing rain will then become the dominant
precipitation type throughout the region.

Wet-bulb temperatures remaining in the upper 20s and breezy
southerly winds in place today will act to enhance ice accretion
efficiency so expecting ice accretion amounts to range between
a light glaze up to a tenth of an inch. Higher ice accretion
amounts between a tenth and a quarter inch are expected in the
higher terrain of the Berkshires, Taconics and the southern
Greens.

After 15 - 18 UTC today, the warm nose and associated 850 -
700hPA jet will shift southeastward towards southern New
England, taking the areas of steady freezing rain with it. As
the best moisture and forcing exit to our south and east, the
mid-levels turn drier but low level moisture remain trapped
underneath the inversion. Surface temperatures will slowly warm
into the low 30s this afternoon with valley areas eventually
rising into the mid-30s. The cold air at the surface will be
tough to scour out and as we lose the ice in the clouds this
afternoon, expecting freezing drizzle to linger across most of
eastern NY and western New England. Even if sfc temperatures
warm to 33 - 34, freezing drizzle may still occur as the ground
surface may be cold enough to support ice.

An arctic cold front will then sweep across the region this
evening, first arriving in the southern Adirondacks before
pushing southeastward into the Capital District and eventually
the mid-Hudson Valley and Litchfield Hills by 06 UTC. This will
end the freezing drizzle with south-southeasterly winds shifting
to the northwest and becoming quite breezy. In fact, sustained
winds will reach up to 10 - 20kts with gusts to 25 - 35kts. With
a tenth to a quarter inch of ice potentially on trees from the
daytime freezing rain, the strong winds this evening may cause
tree branches to break resulting in some power outages. Greatest
confidence for this to occur is in the Berkshires, Taconics and
southern Greens. Otherwise, snow showers will accompany the
arctic front resulting in coatings to an inch of new snow.

Guidance is in good agreement that strong northwesterly winds
advecting a much colder air characterized with 850hPa dropping
to -16C to -18C over the still warm Lake Ontario waters near +5C.
In fact, guidance shows a multi-lake connection setting up with
a lake aggregate pressure trough across the Great Lakes resulting
in enhanced surface convergence and the formation of a single
lake effect band the penetrates into southern Herkimer County.
In fact, with such strong cold air advection as well as
favorable wind speed shear and low directional shear, the local
ALY lake effect band inland extent tool suggests the band could
extend 170 miles downwind of Lake Ontario. The northwest wind
direction at roughly 300 degrees could direct the lake effect
band into the Capital District and even as far east as the
southern Berkshires by 09 - 12 UTC Monday. This means a fresh
coating to less than an inch of snow could occur just in time
for the morning commute. In southern Herkimer where the band
will be stronger, snowfall rates up to 0.50 to one inch per hour
at times look possible per the latest HREF guidance resulting
in up to 3 to 6 inches of snow by 12 UTC Monday. This band could
impact the NY Thruway. Based on the 12 UTC data, we will decide
if we should upgrade the Winter Storm Watch for the lake effect
in southern Herkimer tonight into Monday morning in southern
Herkimer.

Otherwise, temperatures tonight will drop into the 20s and teens
throughout the area tonight. Breezy winds will continue
overnight as well which will make it feel even colder and could
reduce visibility where lake effect snow or snow showers occur.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A broad trough shifting through southern Canada on Monday will
maintain our multi-lake connection. As trough approaches, the
winds aloft will back from the northwest to the west which will
redirect our lake effect band from the western Mohawk Valley
northward into the western Adirondacks. The westerly flow regime
will result in an even stronger fetch of moisture off Lake
Ontario which will likely enhance the primary lake effect band
and allow it to penetrate into the chimney of Herkimer County.
The local ALY lake effect snow inland extent tool suggest than
band actually extends 140 miles downwind of Lake Ontario which
suggests it could reach into Lake George and even southern
Vermont during the day on Monday. With such a strong fetch in
place, high snowfall rates will likely occur with the HREF
already showing decent probability for inch per hour rates. This
band could have a long residence time in the chimney of
Herkimer County which is increasing confidence that a winter
storm warning may be needed with other winter weather headlines
potentially needed in adjacent counties. The dayshift will
examine 12 UTC data to make this decision. Otherwise, Monday
will be a chilly and breezy day with highs only reaching into
the low to mid 20s.

The true arctic air then arrives after 00 UTC Monday as a
secondary cold front sweeps through the region. Temperatures
will plummet into the single digits for all of eastern NY and
western New England with -15F to -5F in the southern
Adirondacks. Add in continued breezy winds Monday night and we
expect dangerous cold temperatures overnight necessitating wind
chill headlines. As the arctic front sweeps through the area
Monday evening, the winds will shift to the northwest and bring
an end to the lake effect snow.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Long term period will begin Tuesday and Tuesday night with
temperatures running 10-20F below normal for this time of year.
Temperatures begin to moderate for the middle of the week, with near
seasonable temperatures for the end of next week and next weekend.
Other than a few rain/snow showers Wednesday or Thursday with a cold
frontal passage, not much in the way of widespread precip is
expected. See below for more detailed discussion...

Main story for Tuesday will be the anomalously cold temperatures. We
will be under the core of the cold air aloft/upper troughing to
begin the day. With such a cold airmass in place, we will not warm
up much during the day despite ample sunshine thanks to surface high
pressure building into the region from western NY and rising heights
aloft. Lowering subsidence inversion heights will also prevent deep
mixing, further helping to keep us cold during the day. Expecting
single digits highs for much of the region, with slightly warmer
temperatures (low 10s) in the Mid Hudson Valley. Meanwhile, portions
of the Adirondacks and southern Greens may remain below 0 through
the day Tuesday. A few lingering lake effect snow showers are
possible for the Mohawk Valley and eastern Catskills to begin the
day thanks to northwest flow/cold advection over the Great lakes.
However, with a weakening pressure gradient as the surface high
builds in and lowering inversion heights through the day, any
remaining lake effect should diminish quickly during the morning
hours with dry conditions through the rest of the day.

Tuesday night has the potential to be another very cold night with
temperatures below 0 once again for most of the region. Initially,
high pressure will be overhead with clear skies and light winds
Tuesday evening, so temperatures should fall off rather quickly
after sunset, especially in areas that maintain a snowpack into
early next week. However, the surface high will slide off to the
east overnight and the pressure gradient will increase as an area of
low pressure tracks to the north of our region through Canada. We
actually switch to a warm advection regime after midnight Tuesday
night with winds increasing from the southwest. Warm air advection
may also lead to some increased cloudcover. This will help to
mitigate radiational cooling. However, there remains some
uncertainty as to a) how quickly this will happen and b) how far
temperatures fall while conditions remain favorable for radiational
cooling. The Taconics and western New England will have the longest
time with favorable radiational cooling conditions, so some of the
colder readings (outside of the Adirondacks) will likely be in these
areas.

Wednesday, temperatures moderate back to more seasonable levels with
weak warm air advection into the region as the surface low tracks
well to our north. Highs will be in the 20s for most of the region,
with some low 30s possible in valley locations. Can't rule out a few
snow showers across our northwestern zones as the surface low track
to our north, but most areas will remain dry through the day
Wednesday.

Wednesday night and Thursday, trailing cold front associated with
the surface low looks to move through our region, but there are some
differences in timing of the frontal passage in the model guidance.
There is also some uncertainty as to how cold the airmass behind the
front will be. A colder airmass would reignite the chance for some
lake effect snow showers for western areas (not to the extent that
we will see early in the week, however). Some additional rain/snow
showers will also be possible with the cold frontal passage. At this
time, will maintain chance PoPs for Adirondack zones with slight
chance PoPs for most of the rest of the region. Lows Wednesday night
will be mainly in the 10s and 20s. Thursday highs depend on how cold
the airmass behind the front is, but at this time went near NBM
guidance with highs in the 20s for the high terrain and 30s
elsewhere.

Thursday night through next weekend...Guidance suggests a wedge of
high pressure builds into the region behind the passage of the cold
front, so expecting tranquil weather to end the week with seasonable
temperatures. During this timeframe, an upper disturbance will move
off the southeast coast, but is expected to remain well south and
east of our area. Next weekend, appears we will be under the
influence of broad troughing aloft as flow becomes more convoluted
with lots of moving pieces. Details remain fuzzy at this long lead
time, so went near NBM guidance which has some chance PoPs for next
weekend with troughing nearby. Will iron out details in the coming
days.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Through 18z/Mon...Freezing rain is coming to an end at
KALB/KGFL/KPOU and soon to end at KPSF. Included TEMPOS for all
sites for possible lingering precipitation/mist for a few more
hours. IFR/MVFR cigs will likely linger for a few hours as well.
Thereafter, cigs should slowly lift into the MVFR/VFR range in
advance of an approaching cold front. Another brief period of light
rain may be possible at KPOU later this afternoon (21z/Sun-02z/Mon)
so included VCSH for now.

In the wake of the cold front, mainly VFR cigs are expected, though
KPSF may be borderline MVFR/VFR. A snow shower along and just behind
the front could pass across KALB/KGFL/KPSF this evening though
activity looks rather scattered in nature so will just include VCSH
for now. Should a snow shower occur, brief IFR/MVFR cigs/vsbys are
possible. A lake-effect band will then set up along the Mohawk
Valley and may extend as far east as the Capital District at times
on Monday, but confidence was not high enough to include VCSH at
this time.

Wind will remain out of the south to southwest at 8-14 kt with gusts
around 20 kt through this afternoon, then shift to the west to
northwest at 10-17 kt with gusts to around 30 kt tonight into
tomorrow (highest gusts at KALB/KPSF). Will linger LLWS for a few
more hours at KGFL/KPOU as winds at 2000 feet remain between 35-40
kt and surface sustained winds have occasionally been below 10 kt.

Outlook...

.HYDROLOGY...
Widespread hydrological problems are not expected in the ALY HSA
the next several days into late next week.

A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and some snow is expected
Sunday. Since mainly freezing/frozen precip is expected, this
event will not impact river and stream flows.

Much colder air will move into the region Sunday night and last
through Tuesday night. Temperatures will remain well below
normal with some sub-zero minimum temperatures over the high
terrain of the southern Adirondacks and southern Greens at
night expected. Even valley areas are expected to drop into the
single digits overnight, especially Tuesday night. Due to the
prolonged period of cold temperatures, any rivers that
currently have open water over the Adirondacks may result in
localized freeze-up ice jams. Overall, ice may form and thicken
on some river, streams, and shallow bodies of water.

For details on specific area rivers and lakes, including
observed and forecast river stages and lake elevations, please

...SLICK CONDITIONS AND GUSTY WINDS TONIGHT...

Some patchy freezing drizzle and plain drizzle will transition to
scattered snow showers tonight across eastern New York and
western New England, as a cold front moves through. Caution should
be exercised outdoors on roadways, parking lots and walkways
where some surfaces may be untreated and treacherous.

Some gusty winds may bring down isolated large tree limbs and
power lines for some power outages due to some ice build up. The
winds will shift westerly at 10 to 20 mph with some gusts to 25
to 35 mph with the cold frontal passage this evening.
