pressure approaching from the Ohio Valley region will bring the next
chance of widespread precipitation Monday into Monday night. At this
time, mainly rain is expected although a wintry mix or some snow may
occur across northern areas.  Blustery conditions will return Monday
night.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
.UPDATE...As of 1235 AM EST, the cold front has now progressed
across most of the region but is currently dropping southward
across the mid- Hudson Valley into NW CT. Just ahead of the
front, temperatures remain in the low to mid- 60s with the
Hudson Valley Regional Airport at Poughkeepsie still at 65 (one
degree shy of the March 7 daily record). NYS Mesonet data
suggests a 3-hour change in temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees has
been common in the wake of the front tonight. So, expect a
quick drop in temperatures across the mid-Hudson Valley into NW
CT during the overnight. North of the front, temperatures have
fallen back into the 30s and 40s for most.

Winds are beginning to ease as gusts are now more in the 25 to
35 mph range when compared to 35 to 50 mph earlier in the
night. Wind will continue to subside, becoming variable at less
than 10 mph by daybreak.

Otherwise, partly to mostly cloudy conditions are expected for
the remainder of the overnight with an increase in high clouds
toward daybreak as our next system approaches. Most if not all
precipitation from this system will hold off until after 7am.

Lows will dip into the upper 20s across the Adirondacks to the
low to mid-40s across the mid-Hudson Valley into NW CT.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
There is some uncertainty about how far south the weak cold
front gets later tonight, which will affect how far north the
front pushes north through the day Monday. A very strong
southwest boundary layer jet provides good low level forcing and
isentropic lift through the day Monday, driving the old cold
front northward and rapidly spreading rain across our region
between daybreak and noon. The colder air in the western Mohawk
Valley and southern Adirondacks should support a mix of snow,
sleet and a chance for freezing rain before changing to rain
through the morning.

There could be some breaks in the clouds or even a few intervals
of sun south of the old boundary as it pushes north, which will
support temperatures warming to the 60s in the mid Hudson Valley
and NW CT. There could be some 50s around or just south of the
Capital Region to southern Berkshires, with 40s elsewhere,
again, depending on how far north the low level boundary gets.
There may be some instability in the mid Hudson Valley and NW CT
Monday afternoon, with a possible isolated thunderstorm.

Rain exits and just a few lingering scattered rain and snow
showers Monday night as deeper cold advection spreads into our
region. Gusty west to northwest winds will bring in the cold air
and some gusts could exceed 40 mph in some areas. We will keep
an eye on the potential for Wind Advisory conditions Monday
night in some places. Then drying and increasing sun Tuesday
with gusty northwest winds continuing, diminishing through
Tuesday afternoon. Highs Tuesday in the lower to mid 40s and
cooler in higher terrain.

Dry weather continues Tuesday night into Wednesday. Later
Wednesday afternoon, clouds increase and there is a slight
chance for some rain in southern areas with a system just
beginning to build north out of the mid Atlantic area. Highs
Wednesday in the lower to mid 40s with upper 30s higher terrain.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The extended begins with fairly tranquil weather, but then gets more
active late Friday into the weekend, as a pair or low pressure
systems will possibly impact the forecast area.

Wednesday Night into Thursday Night...A bifurcated or split mid and
upper level flow regime persists during the mid-week, as the medium
range guidance is in fairly good agreement that a southern stream
disturbance passes south of the region with slight or low chance
PoPs for light rain/snow in the mid Hudson Valley and portions of NW
CT.  Otherwise, high pressure builds back in briefly.  Lows will be
in the 20s with some teens over the Adirondack Park. In the
persistent southwest flow, another disturbance passing south of Long
Island off the Mid Atlantic Coast may bring isolated to scattered
showers late in the day across the the southeastern Catskills, mid
Hudson Valley, and NW CT.  Temps warm into the mid 40s to lower 50s
in the valley areas, and upper 30s to mid 40s over the hills and
mountains. Moisture associated the wave passing to the south and its
inverted trough diminishes early in the evening.  Lows are expected
in the 20s to lower 30s with high pressure briefly building in from
the north.

Friday into Saturday...Complex storm system to close the week will
likely impact the region.  A mid and upper level trough over the
Plains will translate eastward.  Some of the guidance like the 12Z
ECMWF keep it dry during the day.  The 12Z GFS/CMC and some of the
Ensembles have a warm front bring some morning light rain and snow,
and then some light rain in the afternoon with the warm front, and
short-wave.  We kept some chance PoPs in the forecast, especially
during the afternoon. Timing of disturbances in the southwest flow
is tricky. In the warm advection, high temps in the 40s to spotty
lower 50s will be common with a few upper 30s over the higher
terrain.

The mid and upper level trough takes a more neutral tilt with some
gulf moisture being transported northeast ahead of a cold front, and
low pressure moving out the central MS and Ohio Valleys Fri night.
The 12Z EC/CMC and some Ensembles have the cyclone passing west of
the Hudson River Valley with a warm solution and mainly rain. Colder
air moves back in during the afternoon and evening.  The 12Z GFS is
further south and has a ptype transition to mountain, and even
snow in the valleys (i.e. 12Z GEFS mean plume for Albany yields
around 4" of snow). Too early to buy into the colder scenario,
and will lean with the NBM. Lows will be in the upper 20s to
upper 30s across the region. The best chance of accumulating
snow will be northwest of Albany and over the higher terrain.
Rain in the valleys on Saturday with possibly a transition to
snow in the afternoon depending how quickly cold air sweeps back
in with the frontal passage. Highs in the 30s to lower 40s west
of the Hudson River Valley, and mainly mid and upper 40s from
the Hudson River Valley eastward with some 30s over the southern
Greens.

Saturday Night to Sunday...Westerly upslope and lake effect snow
showers will persist near the western Adirondacks, southern Greens
and Catskills with some light accumulations.  Blustery and cold
conditions continue to close the weekend.  Lows in the teens and 20s
with some single numbers over the southern Dacks.  Highs will run
below normal by close to 10 degrees with 20s to mid 30s.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Cold front has cleared the KALB/KGFL/KPSF TAF sites and should move
through KPOU over the next 1-2 hours, with winds shifting to the
west. VFR conditions expected through the rest of the night in the
brief cold advection regime behind the cold front. Some upslope
clouds occurring at KPSF, but should remain at VFR levels around
3500 ft AGL.

Mid level clouds will quickly increase by around 12Z today, as the
cold front already starts to lift back northward as a warm front. A
wave of low pressure will track along the front and bring widespread
rain to the TAF sites. Rain should start by around 14Z at KALB/KGFL,
16Z at KPSF and 20Z at KPOU. Conditions will deteriorate to MVFR
once the rain begins, with gradual lowering to IFR within 2-4 hours
after the onset of rain.

Mainly IFR conditions are expected until the storm system moves into
New England, with rain then abruptly ending between 02Z-03Z and VFR
conditions returning.

Winds will be westerly around 5-12 kt with some gusts around 20-25
kt at KALB/KPSF, then becoming variable around 5 kt or less by
sunrise today. Winds through much of the day will be mainly
southerly around 3-7 kt, then increasing substantially during the
evening and shifting to the west at 15-22 kt with gusts of 25-35 kt
developing by 02Z or 03Z Tue.

.HYDROLOGY...
We will continue to monitor for isolated hydro issues today
through the early part of the week.

A significant surge of warm temperatures will occur through this
evening. Along with the milder weather, there will be scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms into this evening with a
tenth of an inch or rain or less. At this point, milder
temperatures should allow for some snow melt, although the
precipitation amounts through tonight will not be enough to
cause widespread ice movement or flooding at this time. An
isolated ice jam cannot be ruled out, but any issues should be
localized. The latest MMEFS guidance continues to not have any
locations exceeding minor flood stage in the ALY HSA.

An additional wave of low pressure and a cold front will bring
more precipitation to the region during Monday into Monday
night. At this time mainly rain is expected, while a wintry mix
or some snow could occur for northern areas. Rainfall looks be
around 0.50-1 inch. So there remains the potential for some
isolated hydrologic concerns if enough rainfall and snowmelt
occurs. Will continue to monitor trends.

Seasonably cooler and drier weather is then expected from
Tuesday through Thursday.
