.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure overhead on Wednesday will shift
northeastward off the New England coast Thursday with a developing
southerly wind resulting in moderating temperatures. An explosively
intensifying storm system will then approach from the south and west
late Thursday into Thursday night bringing a mix of rain and snow
and strong, gusty winds. As deep low pressure tracks along the lower
Great Lakes on Friday, warm temperatures, rain, wind, and flooding
will all be possible in the local area. Following a strong cold
frontal passage in the afternoon, temperatures will fall rapidly
into a prolonged period of cold weather through the Christmas
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
.Update...As of 12:40 PM EST...Skies have become mainly clear
across the region except for a band of clouds over northern
Herkimer and hamilton Counties ahead of a cold front that will
track to the north of our region this afternoon. Temperatures
running a few degrees below previous forecast, so given that we
are nearing peak daytime heating ended up lowering daytime highs
by just a degree or two. Otherwise, only minor changes to grids
to reflect current trends. Previous forecast remains on track
with more details below...

.Previous...Cool start to the morning with mainly clear skies
across the region, except for a few more clouds across our
northwestern Adirondacks. Temperatures have been slow to rise
this morning for the higher terrain areas where there is a
decent snowpack on the ground, so trended temps down a couple to
a few degrees here over the next few hours.

Modest high pressure remains positioned over the Northeast
allowing for largely clear skies this morning, seasonably cold
temperatures, and dry conditions across the region. Morning lows
were generally be in the teens with upper single digits at
higher elevations in the southern Adirondacks,
Greens/Berkshires, and Catskills.

Dry conditions will persist through the day today as surface
high pressure slides slowly northeastward and heights aloft rise
slightly on the backside of an upper ridge. A weak upper
shortwave will pass north of the ridge over southern Quebec,
which may lead to increased cloud cover in northern zones into
the afternoon, but otherwise skies will largely be clear.
Temperatures will be near to slightly below normal values, with
highs in the upper 20s to low 30s in high terrain and mid to
upper 30s at lower elevations. Winds will generally be light and
variable under the influence of surface high pressure.

Tonight, surface high pressure will continue to move
northeastward toward the Canadian Maritimes as upper troughing
begins to sharply amplify to the west over the Great Plains. Two
separate surface lows will form, one associated with the potent
upper trough over the central Mississippi Valley and the other
off the Southeast coast; these lows will move toward the region
and ultimately generate and impactful storm Thursday night into
Friday. Locally, dry conditions will continue through the
overnight hours although cloud cover will steadily increase to
widespread overcast skies by Thursday morning due to the onset
of large scale warm advection. Cloud cover will aid in
moderating temperatures slightly, but nighttime temperatures
will remain cold with widespread lows in the mid to upper teens
and low 20s possible in the Mid- Hudson Valley and northwestern
Connecticut.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High Wind Watch for the western and southern Adirondacks from
late Thursday night through Friday...

Aforementioned upper troughing over the Plains will continue to
shift east and dig even deeper over the Midwest, becoming
increasingly negatively tilted and closing off somewhat. Its
surface low expression initially develops over the central
Mississippi Valley will track northeastward toward the lower
Great Lakes while bombing out and rapidly occluding beneath its
parent trough. An extremely cold Arctic airmass behind the
trailing cold front will rapidly sweep across the eastern third
of CONUS. Ahead of the cold front, strong southerly flow with
anomalous warmth and moisture (temps and PW of +2 to 3 standard
anomalies at low levels per NAEFS) supported by a northward
tracking coastal low and diffluent flow aloft will result in a
potential for excessive rainfall. Flooding concerns will be
exacerbated by unseasonable warmth following last week's heavy
snow in high terrain resulting in potentially significant snow
melt; Flood headlines may needed in upcoming forecast packages.
Additionally, strong, gusty southeasterly winds ahead of the
cold front may reach Warning or Advisory criteria; a High Wind
Watch has been hoisted for the southern Adirondacks beginning
Thursday night while additional headlines may be required during
the next few forecast packages.

Ahead of the storm, Thursday will be seasonably mild under a
warm advective regime with highs in the mid to upper 30s in
high terrain and upper 30s to mid 40s at lower elevations.
Clouds will increase in coverage resulting in mostly cloudy
skies for most of the day as isentropic lift supports widespread
upward motion across the region. Precipitation will spread
northeastward through the day, beginning midday in the Mid-
Hudson Valley and reaching northern zones by Thursday evening.
Snow may initially occur in many locales when precipitation
begins, supported by evaporative "wet-bulb" cooling in the
column, but a changeover to rain is anticipated across the
region Thursday night. Snow accumulations of 1-4" are most
likely in high terrain, with limited if any accumulation for
valley locales. Thursday night remains mild, with lows ranging
from the upper 20s and low 30s in high terrain to mid and upper
30s at lower elevations and widespread rain.

Rainfall continues through Friday morning during the peak of
warm advection locally. All told, most locales will see 2-3" of
liquid-equivalent precipitation, with favored locations for
enhancement under southeast flow seeing up to 4". Strong
southeasterly winds will be widespread with gusts in excess of
50 mph likely, particularly at higher elevations. Temperatures
warm significantly above normal values, with highs in the mid to
upper 40s in high terrain and low to mid 50s at lower
elevations. The warmth is short-lived, however, as the potent
cold front will track across the region from west to east during
the afternoon. Temperatures will plummet from seasonally warm
to very cold through the evening. Any lingering precipitation
will quickly transition back to snow as the entire region falls
well below freezing and stays there through the Christmas
weekend.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Strong storm system exits Friday night into Saturday, with the
closed low lifting up into Canada.  There will be some rain showers
changing to snow showers over many areas Friday night with some
dustings in places and 1 or 2 inches in higher terrain. Temperatures
will drop so quickly Friday night, there could be some flash
freezing in poor drainage areas.

Strong low level west to west southwest flow spreads across our
region. The upper dynamics and moisture associated with the
expansive upper low will result in clouds being very slow to clear.
Clouds will be more widespread in the western Mohawk Valley and
southern Adirondacks due to some lake effect moisture and a few
scattered snow showers breaking off from any band that orients
itself mainly north of those areas. The scattered snow showers will
continue through Saturday as clouds gradually break up and erode
form south to north as the upper cut off continues to lift north and
east through Sunday.

Lows by early Saturday morning in the single numbers to low teens.
Highs Saturday in the teens to lower 20s. Wind chills will be around
zero in the valleys to ten to 20 below zero in higher terrain by
daybreak Saturday. Highs Sunday in the upper teens to mid 20s
with winds gradually diminishing Saturday night and Sunday.

Slow and steady moderation of temperatures is expected Monday and
Tuesday as upper flow becomes more zonal.  There is a loose
consensus for some southern stream upper energy to be south of us
and potentially a northern stream upper impulse approaching our
region by later Monday into Tuesday but there is a lot of spread in
the guidance. So, intervals of clouds and sun Monday and Tuesday
with perhaps an isolated snow shower in the southern Adirondacks.

Highs Monday in the mid to upper 20s with around 20 higher terrain.
Highs Tuesday in the lower to mid 30s with mid 20s to around 30
higher terrain.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Through 18z Thu...High pressure over the region will gradually
shift northeast into northern New England tonight into Thursday.
This will result in continued VFR conditions with just
increasing high level clouds through much of the upcoming 24
hour period. Mid level clouds may start to increase at
KPOU/KPSF between around 16Z-18Z Thu well ahead of a developing
storm along the coastal Carolinas.

Winds will near calm, becoming south-southeast around 3-6 kt
Thursday morning.

.HYDROLOGY...
A major storm tracking northeast across the Great Lakes region
will bring periods of moderate to heavy rain to our area
Thursday night and Friday. The heaviest rain will mainly be late
Thursday night into early Friday afternoon, associated with a
surge of warm/moist air and strong, gusty winds. While exact QPF
amounts are uncertain, southeast facing slopes of the higher
terrain (E. Catskills, SE Adirondacks, S. Greens, Berkshires,
Litchfield Hills) will likely have the greatest rainfall amounts
of 2+ inches.

Snow pack is significant over higher elevations from last
week's storm, with water equivalent values of 1 to 3 inches.
Snow melt on Friday along with the potential for 2-3+ inches or
more of rain will cause rises on area rivers and streams with
flooding possible. Ensemble river forecast guidance indicating
several main stem river points with good chance of at least
minor flooding, with some moderate flooding possible. Will
continue to refine these forecasts and flooding potential as the
event draws closer. When forecast confidence increases, a Flood
Watch may be issued. Much colder air will arrive quickly by
Friday night, putting an abrupt end to the thaw and halting
additional runoff.

Strong, gusty southeast winds will also develop Thursday night,
which may result in some power outages. The rain should be heavy at
times late Thursday night into Friday, which combined with snow
melt,
will result in minor flooding at many main stem river points with
moderate flooding possible at a few points. Poor drainage and/or
urban flooding may also occur due to rainfall and mild temperatures.
A strong cold front moving through Friday afternoon could bring an
additional brief period of heavy rain and gusty winds. This will be
followed by a quick coating of snow and a potential flash freeze as
temperatures drop significantly and rapidly following the cold front
passage.

A Wind Advisory, High Wind Watch, Flood Watch and/or Winter Weather
