.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will lift from the coastal Carolinas northeast and
across the region later this afternoon through this evening. A
strong Arctic cold front will cross the region Friday morning,
with strong winds pushing much colder and drier air into the
region. Dry and very cold weather is expected this weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1010 AM EST Thursday..

Late this morning, weak sfc low pressure was located near the
coast of NE SC. To the west, a powerful Arctic front continues
to push across the nations mid-section, extending from the Upper
midwest into the middle and lower Missouri Valley. The latest
radar showed light to moderate rain was occurring along and west
of I-95. Temps were ranging from the lower to mid 30s extrm NW,
to the mid to upper 50s SE.

CAMs have trended up slightly with rainfall amounts, as Gulf
moisture is transported northward across the area into this
evening, with rain falling moderately to briefly heavily at
times. Rainfall amounts of 1-1.75" are expected across the
piedmont, with 0.50 to 1" along and SSE of a Roanoke Rapids-
Wakefield-Ocean City line. Highs today will range from the
lower to mid 40s over the far W-NW counties, upper 40s to mid
50s I-95 corridor, and in the upper 50s to lower 60s ESE.

Rain tapers off from SW to NE this evening, as the sfc low lifts
north of the area and mid-level dry slot slides overhead.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 350 AM EST Thursday..

An anomalously deep/strong mid-level trough will then approach
from the west late tonight and early Fri morning, sending the
Arctic cold front across the area. Overnight model guidance has
accelerated a bit with the timing of the front, which should
cross the area just after sunrise Fri morning through midday on0
Friday. The high for the day will likely be right at sunrise
Fri morning, with temps still expected plummet into the 30s and
20s from late morning into late Fri aftn, as the front crosses
and thicknesses quickly tumble.

The most notable impact on Fri will easily be the winds, which
will gust to 40-50 mph post-frontal passage. A brief period of
light pcpn is also possible, as a narrow band of light showers
looks to accompany the front or just behind it. At least few
snowflakes, and maybe even a rumble of thunder or two, will be
possible as the front surges through the area Fri morning, with
the sky to quickly become partly to mostly sunny late Fri
morning into Fri aftn. With temps falling that quickly, the
potential and concern is there for a flash freeze, where any
residual water freezes on area roadways. However, it should also
be noted that there will be a lull in precipitation overnight.
Also, dewpoints will fall into the single digits and teens by
early to mid- aftn Fri, and this dry air in tandem with drying,
brisk westerly winds should be quite effective in drying out
most residual water and preventing widespread black ice. That
said, there will likely be a few slick spots to be reckoned with
Friday morning into the afternoon for last minute holiday
travelers.

Easily the coldest night of the season to date on tap for Fri
night, with lows ranging from the mid to upper single digits to
the mid teens, with wind chill values in the single digits Fri
evening. Wind chills will be at or just below zero to begin the
day on Sat. A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued for our
entire area for Friday night in anticipation of Wind Chills
bottoming out in the -5 to 0F range areawide.

A very cold, dry Christmas weekend is on the way, and certainly
the coldest in recent memory. Generally mostly sunny on Sat,
but it will be brisk and very cold with highs only ranging from
the mid 20s to around 30. Wind chills top out only in the teens.
Highs Christmas Day Sunday will reach into the upper 20s to
around freezing, as cold albeit modifying high pressure builds
overhead, allowing for winds to relax a bit more. Lows
Christmas night once again in the teens to around 20.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 410 PM EST Wednesday...

No major changes necessary to the forecast in the medium range.
Continued cold and dry on Mon, before temps moderate a bit for
the rest of the week as high pressure builds over the Delmarva
region with light winds. Highs will range through the 30s to
near 40 Mon, in the lower to mid 40s Tue, and in the mid 40s to
near 50 Wed.

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 700 AM EST Thursday...

MVFR arrived at RIC to begin the 12z TAF period, and should
continue to push east to the other terminals through the next
few hours. Conditions will continue to deteriorate through the
afternoon to IFR. Precip will also overspread the rest of the
area through the remainder of the morning, and will continue
through the day and into this evening. There is a slight chance
of thunder at PHF/ORF/ECG this evening as low pressure slides
over the region. NE winds will be light this morning, then turn
to the SE and gusty this afternoon. Have also accounted for some
LLWS across the terminals this afternoon ahead of the
approaching SFC low.

Outlook: Flight restrictions will likely then continue tonight
through Fri morning, as low pressure lifts NNE of the region
and an Arctic cold front crosses the area just after daybreak
Friday. A brief period of snow showers/flurries will be
possible just behind the Arctic frontal passage itself Fri
morning into early Fri aftn. Winds become W-SW then W behind
the front Fri into Fri night, with gusts of 35 to 45 mph
possible. VFR conditions return for later Fri morning and then
persist through the holiday weekend.

.MARINE...
As of 425 AM EST Thursday...

High pressure remains N of the area today. Meanwhile, low pressure
off the SE coast tracks N today into tonight. Winds this morning
were ENE 10-15 kt N and E 15-20 kt S. As the low tracks N, expect
winds to increase later this morning to 15-20 kt with gusts to 25
kt, becoming SE this afternoon. SE winds increase to 20-30 kt with
gusts around 35 kt for the coastal waters, 20-25 kt with gusts to 30
kt across the Ches Bay, Lower James, and Currituck Sound, and 15-20
kt with gusts to 25 kt for the rest of the rivers late this
afternoon into early tonight. Once the low gets N of the area, winds
become SW 20-30 kt with gusts to 35 kt by late tonight across the
Ches Bay and coastal waters (gusts 35-40 kt possible over the N
coastal waters).

The more impactful winds arrive Fri as confidence remains high for a
major marine event. A rapidly deepening area of low pressure is
expected to develop and deepen over the Ohio Valley into the Upper
Great Lakes tonight-Fri. Meanwhile, a strong arctic high builds into
the Northern Plains. The combination of these two features will
result in a very strong cold front pushing across the local waters
Fri morning. Models show 6-hr pressure rises Fri of 10mb+ with 850mb
temperatures dropping to -15C to -20C by Fri evening. This will lead
to deep mixing over the waters (as well as the land areas). SW winds
increase to 25-35 kt with gusts to 45 kt Fri morning, becoming WSW
30-35 kt with gusts to 45 kt behind the cold front. For all areas,
have mentioned in the MWW that a brief period with winds gusting to
50 kt or greater will be possible as the front pushes through Fri
morning (sometime between 6 AM and noon). This may also be enhanced
by convective showers along the front. Will handle this w/ SMWs as
needed and go with Gale Warnings since the predominant winds are
expected to be 30-35 kt with frequent gusts to 45 kt. Will note that
recent hi-res models have trended faster with the front now reaching
the rivers 6-7 AM, the bay 7-9 AM, and the coastal waters 8-11 AM.
Light freezing spray will also be possible late Fri-Sat. The
gradient slackens substantially Sat, though still expect residual
SCA conditions with WSW winds 20-25 kt with  gusts 25-30 kt. Gale
force winds may linger across the coastal waters until Sat
afternoon, but confidence is not high enough to extend Gale Warnings
past the 4th period (Fri night). Winds drop below SCA levels Sun and
become W/NW Sun night into Mon as high pressure builds in from the
west.

Regarding headlines, SCAs go into effect for the Lower James, Ches
Bay, Currituck Sound, and coastal waters this morning and at 1 PM
for the rivers. Gale Warnings for the coastal waters go into effect
at 7 PM this evening due to the potential for SE gusts to around 35
kt. These may need to start earlier depending on how soon the
stronger winds arrive. Gale Warnings go into effect at 4 AM Fri for
the Ches Bay and 6 AM for all the remaining water due to the SW/WSW
behind the front.

Waves and seas of 1-3 ft and 3-4 ft build to 2-4 ft and 4-5 ft
respectively later this morning. Waves build to 4-5 ft late this
afternoon, building to 4-6 ft (perhaps to 7 ft at the mouth of the
bay) Fri. Seas build to 6-9 ft by late this afternoon, building to 7-
12 ft tonight and Fri. Seas gradually subside Sat into Sat night,
dropping below 5 ft by late Sat night. In addition, because seas
build to 6-9 ft nearshore tonight through Fri afternoon for the
Eastern Shore, a High Surf Advisory is in effect for the Maryland
Beaches and Accomack from 10 PM this evening until 1 PM Fri.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 445 PM Wednesday...

Not much change in the general thinking, and with the latest
forecast still predicting widespread moderate flooding with
locally major flooding possible, have issued a Coastal Flood
Watch for the MD eastern shore for Dorchester/Wicomico/Somerset/inland
Worcester. SW winds increase ahead of the front, becoming WSW
behind the front. This will allow water to be pushed towards the
eastern side of the upper Ches Bay and allow for the potential
of moderate to locally major coastal across the eastern side of
the Bay from Cambridge to Saxis and minor flooding to Bayford.
Inland Worcester has been included as water may funnel up the
tidal rivers and lead to flooding up to Pocomoke City and Snow
Hill. Currently, most of the remaining sites are forecast to
stay below minor flooding levels.

One other thing to watch will be water levels into the
Currituck sound with the strong southerly flow Thu night into
early Fri. A lot of uncertainty with water levels here, but
locations along the north shore of the Albemarle sound and up
the Currituck sound to Va Beach could see some flooding. Given
strong WSW winds, a blowout tide is expected for the western
side of the Ches Bay and the Atlantic side of the area from NC
to MD. A Low Water Advisory may be needed for portions of these
areas.

region behind the front for later Friday through the holiday
weekend.
