AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Wakefield VA
717 AM EDT Sun Oct 2 2022
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure builds into New England into early next week. A
coastal low will linger off the mid-Atlantic coast into mid week,
bringing clouds, cooler weather and rain chances.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 615 AM EDT Sunday...
The remnants of Ian have moved over the W Piedmont. Meanwhile, a
coastal low has formed off the VA coast. The two features will
gradually phase later today into the middle of the week. A boundary
resides over MD this morning with locally higher dew points and
light rain continuing. Rain will gradually move S today with
everyone likely seeing light rain by this evening. Light
rain/drizzle continues through tonight. Patchy fog has developed
across the Piedmont and is expected to slowly lift this
morning. Vis may drop to 1/2-2 SM at times with locally dense
fog possible. Temps as of 4 AM ranged from the 50s for most to
the mid 60s over the Eastern Shore. Breezy to windy NNE/N winds
will develop later today into tonight due to the tightening
pressure gradient between the high to the N and the coastal low
with gusts 50-55 mph possible along the coast Mon (25-35 mph
gusts inland). As such, Wind Advisories go into effect late this
afternoon/this evening for the Atlantic coastal location of the
Eastern Shore and the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. Wind
Advisories go into effect at 10 PM tonight for the Peninsula,
Hampton Roads, and Northern Outer Banks. With widespread cloud
cover and rain moving into the area today, highs will range from
the upper 50s NW to the mid 70s SE (where breaks in the cloud
cover are possible). Lows tonight in the mid to upper 40s NW to
the mid to upper 50s SE.
&&
.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 615 AM EDT Sunday...
The coastal low lingers off the VA coast into Wed, gradually
becoming vertically stacked, before sliding offshore Wed-Thurs.
Meanwhile, high pressure will build into New England. This will
result in a prolonged CAD setup with widespread cloud cover,
rain/drizzle, and anomalously cool high temps. Highest rainfall
totals will be NE over MD with lowest totals SW. Exact amounts
remain uncertain, but expect mainly light rain/drizzle with
occasional rounds of moderate rain over the next few days. Recent
model runs have trended closer to the coast with the low and
therefore now have PoPs through Tues before the rain tapers off from
W to E Tues night/early Wed as the low begins to move offshore. An
upper level low pivots over the area Tues with perhaps heavier rain
than Mon. Have trended PoPs up Tues but would not be surprised if
PoPs increase even more if models continue to show this.
Breezy to windy NNE/N winds will continue Mon-Tues due to the
tightening pressure gradient between the high to the N and the
coastal low with gusts 50-55 mph possible along the coast Mon
(25-35 mph gusts inland) and 30-40 mph gusts along the coast
(20- 30 mph gusts inland) Tues. Wind Advisories remain in effect
through Monday evening for near-coastal portions of the area. Given
the setup with cloud cover in place and breezy/wind N/NNE winds
funneling in cool air, expect anomalously cool highs for Mon
and Tues in the lower to mid 50s inland (lower to mid 60s along
the coast). In fact, record low maximum temps are possible both
days for portions of the area. Warmer and drier Wed with highs
around 70F. Lows Mon, Tues, and Wed nights in the mid 40s W to
mid 50s E.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 440 AM EDT Sunday...
Dry weather prevails through the extended. High pressure builds into
the area Thurs before a dry cold front crosses Fri. Behind the cold
front, strong high pressure builds into the Mississippi Valley with
cooler temps coming into the area by the weekend. Highs in the mid-
upper 70s Thurs and Fri and lower 60s NW to upper 60s SE Sat and
Sun. Lows in the upper 40s W to mid 50s E Thurs night, lower 40s NW
to lower 50s SE Fri night, and upper 30s NW to upper 40s SE Sat
night.
&&
.AVIATION /11Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 715 AM EDT Sunday...
IFR/LIFR CIGs linger across the Piedmont and Eastern Shore this
morning with patchy fog which is expected to gradually lift by
late morning. Expect lower CIGs to gradually push SE today with
IFR CIGs reaching the SE terminals by this evening. RIC will be
near the boundary of IFR/MVFR CIGs through early this afternoon.
Confidence increases by early this afternoon that RIC will be
and remain IFR through the remainder of the 12z taf period.
Light rain over MD will gradually move south through the day
with all terminals expected to see rain by the evening. Mainly
MVFR VIS will be possible with the rain.
Outlook: Rain chances continue into Tues/Tues night with CAD
remaining and widespread IFR/LIFR CIGs likely to continue Mon
into at least early Wed. Conditions slowly improve from west to
east Wed- Wed night as a coastal low pulls away from the coast.
VFR conditions return Thurs as high pressure builds over the
region.
&&
.MARINE...
As of 630 AM Sunday...
Strong high pressure will drop SE overnight into Sunday as
secondary cyclogenesis takes place off the VA/NC coast. Renewed
tightening of the pressure gradient will result in winds veering
around to the NNW, becoming NNW and rapidly increasing NNE later
this aftn into the evening. With the pattern of strong high
pressure (1030mb+) centered from the western Great Lakes to
eastern Canada and a developing coastal low off the SE AV/NC
coast, strong winds are expected to persist through at least Tue
(peaking late tonight into Mon). The coastal zones N of
Parramore Island have been upgraded to Storm Warnings, with Gale
Warnings now in effect for all remaining zones (have added the
upper rivers as well). Given the strong winds over the waters
have maintained Wind Advisories for land areas adjacent to
local waters this evening through the daylight hours of Monday
(also expanded MD to include all of Worcester County).
Seas will avg 4-5 ft through most of today, except across the N
where they build to 8-10 ft by later aftn. By Mon, seas
increase to 10-15 ft, but potentially as high as 14-18 ft in
the northern coastal zones. Seas will take well into the middle
of next week to decrease below SCA thresholds. High Surf have
been issued for all beaches later today/tonight through
Tuesday. Waves in the bay build to 4-6 ft with 6-9 ft near the
mouth of the bay later tonight/Mon and will maintain these
levels into Tuesday. A brief quiet period is expected late Wed
into Thu, with another cold front sweeping through the region by
Fri.
High rip current risk continues today and Monday, and very
likely into Tuesday as well.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 630 AM EDT Saturday...
Water levels are generally showing departures of +1.0 to +1.5
feet early this morning w/ only some spotty areas of minor
flooding with this tide cycle. Big changes are on the way
however, as a frontal boundary pushes south later today, with
the pressure gradient tightening up in between strong high
pressure from the Great Lakes to eastern Canada and developing
low pressure off the mid-Atlantic/NC coast.
Strong N- NE surge begins later this aftn northern areas, and
tonight/Mon elsewhere (coupled w/ 11-13 ft+ seas). Expect tidal
anomalies to rise to 3-4ft in the lower Ches Bay and SE VA/NE
NC coastal waters. The Coastal Flood Watches have been converted
to a Coastal Flood warning from late Sunday tonight through
Monday night/Tuesday. Also added Ocean City/Worcester MD and
Middlesex/Lancaster to the warnings. Current peak water levels
are forecast for the high tide cycles later mon aftn and early
Tue morning. Some locations in Hampton Roads/VA Beach and NE NC
have the potential to see extensive flooding and the highest
water levels in about 10 years.
&&
.CLIMATE...
