Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Precipitation lingers through the day on Tuesday as
onshore flow continues to bring showers across the panhandle. Much
of the area could also see a slight chance of a thunderstorm
through the day, as instability across the area creates conditions
favorable for the development of some stronger individual cells.
In addition, 850 mb temperatures of between -6 and -7 C continue
to indicate that the possibility for snow mixing in with various
showers will continue to remain a concern.

Tuesday night will be drier for most of the area, though Yakutat
could prove the exception. Beyond Yakutat, much of the panhandle
will see winds turn more offshore ahead of a new system
approaching from the S. Think that some areas, especially in the
southern half of the panhandle, could see some fog should winds
subside. Otherwise, the big story continues to be the approaching
storm force system from Wednesday onwards. Forecaster confidence
is average.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday into Saturday morning/...A storm-force
low will move into the eastern Gulf from the south Wednesday into
Thursday morning and the associated front will move over the
Panhandle over the same time period. Winds of up to 55 kt are
possible with the tight pressure gradient near the the area of low
pressure over the eastern Gulf on Wednesday as it moves
northward. The low will progressively weaken to below Gale force
by noon Thursday. Gales are possible over the southern 2/3 of the
Inner Channels Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. The
southern 2/3 of the Outer Coast, primarily from Sitka, southward,
may have sustained winds of up to 30 to 40 mph with gusts of up to
50 to 55 mph with gusts potentially up to near 60 mph between the
Cape Decision and Sitka areas. Gusty winds are also possible over
the Southern Inner Channel land areas as sustained winds of up to
around 35 mph with gusts up to around 40 mph are possible. Seas
up to around 35 ft are possible over the eastern Gulf as the low
skirts past the Panhandle. Mariners should use extra caution if
they must venture out in the storm force winds and high seas.
People who live along or near the Outer Coast and Southern Inner
Channels should use extra caution if they must travel in the
strong winds, especially in high profile vehicles and make sure
any loose outdoor objects are secured and stay away from heavily
forested areas during the gusty winds. Late Thursday night through
Wednesday morning, will rapidly weaken and move northwestward
away from the forecast area.

As for precipitation and temperatures, they will not be an
impactful issue for the period. Areas around Haines Border
Customs and White Pass will see a bit of wintry precipitation as
the aforementioned front moves through the area, but it doesn't
look to be anything to worry about as snowfall rates and totals
look to remain well below advisory levels. The Yakutat area also
has a chance of seeing some very light snow accumulations very
early Wednesday morning and around the same time on Thursday
morning right around the time of their overnight low temperature,
but that looks like it will be even less impactful. According to
850mb model forecast temperatures and winds, no significant cold
or warm air advection is expected over the forecast area through
the forecast period. MOS forecast guidance agrees with this,
keeping high and low temperatures relatively near seasonal values
through the period. Overnight low temperatures may dip a little
lower toward the weekend due to clearer skies and lighter winds
bringing in increased chances for some decent radiational cooling.

Conditions will progressively improve after the storm-force low
weakens and pulls northwestward away from the Panhandle. Showers
and clouds will gradually decrease in coverage and intensity
starting during the day on Thursday and well into the weekend. As
it is looking, right now, we potentially have a nice weekend on
tap for the eastern Gulf and Southeast Alaska with increasing
chances for broken to even partly cloudy skies and very low
chances for precipitation. Much lighter winds look to dominate
the late week and weekend, as well.

Model agreement drastically improved when compared to the past few
days, especially yesterday, but it still was not perfect this
morning. Therefore, forecast confidence is average through the
long term forecast period.
