.SHORT TERM.../Through Fri night/ The front that brought the rain
last night to much of the panhandle (especially the north) has
weakened and moved into Canada this afternoon. We are currently
left with mostly SW flow and scattered showers. Winds are mostly
low at the moment. Highest winds currently are in the Skagway area
where S winds of 20 kt with gusts to 30 kt are currently blowing.

Current forecast trends are looking drier with breaks in the
clouds as a ridge builds over the eastern panhandle tonight. With
the breaks in clouds and low level moisture some fog is possible
later tonight for many areas. Eyes then turn to an area of low
pressure that will develop in the NW gulf late tonight and move SE
through the gulf through Fri evening. A deepening upper trough
anchored over the panhandle, as well as the surface ridge, are
expected to work together to keep the low (as well as most of the
rain and wind with it) offshore. The gulf waters will mainly see
25 kt of wind at most out of this. The inner channels will mainly
remain dry with lighter winds, though the outer coast could see
some

As the low in the gulf dives SE, pressure gradients start to
switch across the panhandle Fri night from a southerly gradient
to more northerly. As a result, wind directions have been changed
to a more northerly direction across a large part of the panhandle
for Fri night. These winds will remain mostly light however. Also
with the more offshore flow, more and larger breaks in the clouds
are expected so some areas could see overnight lows dip into the
30s.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Thursday/ Aloft, a ridge builds
over over the Gulf of Alaska through mid next week. By Thursday,
an upper trough displaces the ridge axis over BC and digs into the
Gulf. At the surface, a high pressure center builds south of 50N
LON and extends into the Gulf allowing for a flat ridge pattern
to set up over the panhandle through Monday. A surface low
develops along the Aleutian Islands Tuesday and moves over
Southcentral Alaska. This sharpens the ridge over the eastern Gulf
and gives way to a front associated with the surface low. This
front then moves through the panhandle through the end of next
week.

Other than some isolated to scattered showers late Saturday night
into early Sunday morning over the northern panhandle, dry
conditions return through Tuesday. There is still some
uncertainty on exactly when rain moves back into the panhandle
however regarding a strong low that looks to drop down into the
the Gulf from the Bering Sea on Thursday. One thing is for sure
though, heavy rain will return the panhandle by late next week.

Temperatures remain seasonable with day time highs in the mid to
upper 50s and overnight lows in the low to mid 40s. Winds remain
on the lighter side over land, but along the outside waters, NW
winds to 25 kts are expected to develop Sunday night then
diminishing Monday. By Tuesday, SW flow develops in the gulf and
winds increase to 20-25 kts.

.AVIATION...Looking around the panhandle and using surface reports,
mostly VFR flight conditions are found around the area. Yakutat
has been dealing with passing showers that briefly lower
conditions to MVFR before going back to VFR.

Going forward, main concerns going into tonight will be fog and
areas of lower clouds. The lowered clouds may push the VFR
conditions into MVFR but it's the fog that is the bigger concern
that could drop flight conditions down to IFR with brief periods of
LIFR. Any gusty winds this afternoon should calm going into
tonight.
