.SHORT TERM.../Through Fri night/ Increasing winds and
precipitation are the main stories of the shore range forecast
today. The culprit is a gale force front that has been lurking
offshore for the past 24 hours will be making its way eastward
today. Yakutat is already raining and that will spread eastward
through the day. As the precip starts up, some areas of the
panhandle may see some snow mix in, but little in the way of
accumulation is expected with temperatures already above freezing
in many parts of the panhandle, and those temperatures are just
expected to get warmer as the day goes on.

The main forecast challenge today will actually be with a low
pressure wave that develops along the front today in the N pacific
and rides north into the SE gulf by late Fri night. It will do two
things. First, it will stop the eastward progress of the gulf
front and cause it to stall along the outer coast tonight keeping
precip going for many areas. The second is its potential to send
high wind gusts into the southern panhandle tonight and into Sat.
This turns out to be a rather border line case as factors in favor
are a low level jet strength forecast to be around 60 to 65 kt
(just high enough to raise concerns) and the SE trajectory of the
winds. Points against include recent guidance putting the main
low center just a little farther offshore then previously
suggested and some stability showing up at low levels in the
forecast soundings in the south. At the current time it appears
the best chance for high wind gusts is at Hydaburg for late Fri
night into early Sat with the southern part of zone 28 not getting
into it until Sat evening if it does at all. Confidence is enough
to say that high winds are possible, but not definite at this
time. Decided to leave the watch alone in light of this to await
further model runs. Even if there are no high wind gusts, the
southern panhandle will still be rather windy during this time
period with gusts 40 to 50 mph very likely over a wide area of the
south tonight.

.LONG TERM.../Saturday through Thursday/ The long term forecast
remains active as multiple lows impact the panhandle through next
Thursday. As a stationary gale force front sits along the coast, a
new low forms south of the panhandle along the boundary and rides
north along the front. This will re-intensify winds to strong
gales, potential for low end storms, along the outer coast.
Highest winds look to focus across the southern coastal areas and
inner channels. As the band of strongest winds move east, periods
of high wind gusts (gusts to 60 mph) are possible for areas
including Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan, and Metlakatla. Along
with windy conditions across the south Saturday, moderate to
heavy precipitation arrives with lesser rates across the north.
There is some uncertainty leading to lesser confidence in
precipitation amounts. With the current southerly track of the
low, precipitation amounts will typically remain lighter across
the north. Depending on the strength and track of the low,
precipitation amounts could differ greatly from north to south.
Temperatures do look warm with these systems keeping precipitation
mainly rain.

The low shifts to the central gulf as yet another low rides north
along the boundary once again Sunday. This brings another round of
gusty and wet conditions across the panhandle.

Outlook...The series of low pressure systems breaking off of the
upper level jet to our south and tracking up into the SE gulf
continues into the beginning of next week. A shift to an upper
level ridge over the gulf looks to set up Wednesday into
Thursday, but with impulses passing through it. Usually a ridge in
the gulf leads to lower precip potential, or at least lighter
amounts. The timing and strength of any impulses, and how they
translate to surface features, has lower confidence, but
generally we remain on the north (cool) side of the jet stream
through the extended forecast, meaning there remains some
potential for snow despite the warm March sun angle.
