.SHORT TERM... Snow continues across the Southern Panhandle today
as one of the main fronts lifts northward toward the region. Some
areas have With impressive upper dynamics, would not be surprised
to see snowfall rates of 1-2+ inches per hour in some locations,
especially in the S central panhandle today. Expect snowfall
coverage and intensity to only increase and begin to push
northward by late tonight.

By Sunday precipitation overspreads the entire region as the first
frontal boundary pushes northward and a deep 955 mb surface low
makes its way northward in the western gulf. A much stronger
occluded front approaches the Outer Coast Sunday morning with
strong mid level wind dynamics and much warmer air. This part of
the system will also enhance lift and continue to help pump up
moisture from the south leading to impressive precipitation
rates. Due to warm air approaching, expect areas along the Outer
Coast and South to warm above freezing and switch over to rain.
Further north and inland, the cold airmass will continue to win
out allowing for very heavy snowfall to persist. Snowfall rates
exceeding 2+ inches per hour are likely Sunday especially along
the Coast Mountains to Juneau to Upper Lynn Canal. At the same
time, winds will dramatically increase along the Coast and through
the Southern Panhandle where winds could gust 40 to 50 mph as the
occluded front pushes in. High end gales to low end storms
expected along the Outer Coast at the peak of the event Sunday
morning. Small craft to gale force conditions will persist through
much of the Inner Channels through Sunday. Areas that see strong
wind will likely warm up above freezing faster and therefore
change over to rain. Lower confidence exists in the exact
changeover time from snow to rain along the outer coast. An
earlier changeover would mean significantly lower snowfall
totals, but much higher liquid rain.

The forecast remains largely on track with 12 to 30+ inches of
snow likely for much of the Panhandle. Lowest confidence exists in
the change over from snow to rain for most places. There is the
possibility some northern areas could stay snow for the entirety
of the event; however model guidance still disagrees with the
northern extent of the "warmer" air. There is also a growing
likelihood that an earlier changeover to rain could occur in the
southern and central panhandle, with places like Ketchikan
becoming rain or a rain snow mix through late Saturday night.

Immediately behind the snowfall, high precipitation totals in the
southern panhandle may contribute to minor flooding along roads,
in backyards, etc. With significant QPF numbers anticipated, a
Flood Watch has been issued for parts of the Ketchikan area, and
the situation will be closely monitored to see if this needs to
be extended to other nearby areas. While this isn't necessarily
for the main streams around the area, runoff is possible,
especially given all of the snow across the area.

.LONG TERM.../Monday morning through Thursday/...Bottom line, this
week is going to be wet and warmer. Models show an upper level
trough over the gulf with multiple disturbances, about one per
day, moving up towards the panhandle from the south along the
east flank of the trough. Model details (track and timing) are
fuzzy at best with each wave so changes to the forecast were
focused on the first wave approaching the southern panhandle
Monday morning, which also appears to be the strongest of the
series in this time frame.

For the Monday system, winds will be elevated and gusty across the
southern zones. Strong winds, 50 mph or higher, are likely for
areas around Craig, Hydaburg, Annette Island, and Ketchikan
Monday during the day. In addition to the wind continuing, 1-2
inches of rain are expected Monday for the same areas. Obviously,
this is on top of whatever falls out of the sky between now and
then. For this reason, Special Weather Statements and a Flood
Watch (Ketchikan area) continue into Monday afternoon for
expected impacts (ponding, street flooding). Increased the winds
and QPF in the forecast as part of today's package.

Beyond Monday, the general trend is to keep the relatively high
snow levels through Wednesday before they start to creep down
slowly. Forecast snow levels are 2000-3000 feet south, 500-1000
feet north. This will keep precipitation mostly rain, except some
snow at high elevations and possibly at night for the northern
areas. High temperatures are expected to be above freezing at sea
level for all of the panhandle through Thursday. Forecaster
confidence in the general warm, wet pattern is high.
