* WHAT...Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

* WHERE...Taiya Inlet and Klondike Highway.

* WHEN...Until 9 AM AKST this morning.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. 
  Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be 
  difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Wind chills will be as low as 30 to 40 
  below zero, and may be colder to 50 below in the morning. 
  Blowing snow will reduce visibility.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around
trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of
your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if
you must drive.

.SHORT TERM...Weather pattern with strong high pressure over the
Canadian Yukon and British Columbia will last through the end of
the week with continued frigid arctic air and outflow winds. As a
low near Haida Gwaii moves to the SE outflow winds will diminish.
Pattern change begins as a weak low moves into the AK Gulf late
Thursday, the first of many to come. Besides a slow warm up and
decrease in winds this low will only bring chance of perception
to offshore areas but will bring in increasing clouds. Minimum
temperatures this morning ranges form -20 to 20 F. Overnight lows
tonight will be similar. Wind chill advisories continue for
certain central and northern panhandle locations but with some
calmer winds cancelled Gustavus and Hoonah.

.LONG TERM...(Friday onwards) A pattern change is expected in the
long term with a rapid warm-up, heavy precipitation, and strong
coastal winds.

Strong winds persist in Northern Lynn through the long term,
resulting in heavy freezing spray and wind chill advisories. For
active wind chill advisories and more details, please see winter
products. A weak wave may push into the southern panhandle Friday
ahead of the main system resulting in up to 3 inches of snowfall.
Due to the nature of snow showers, more or less is possible with
breaks in between bands of snowfall.

A major winter storm / atmospheric river is being watched for the
upcoming weekend with enhanced onshore flow bringing warm, moist
air into the region. Given the antecedent cold temperatures well
established before this onset of onshore flow, there is an
increased risk of heavy snowfall at the start of the system before
areas change to heavy rain due to the warming with this system.
Timing of the change over to rain is as early as Saturday
afternoon for the south, while the north will likely change over
some time Sunday. Lowest confidence on when/if the Northern Lynn
region will change to rainfall. There is above average confidence
that this system will be accompanied by heavy moisture and warm
air, but below average confidence on how far north the warming
will reach. Snowfall totals range from 3 to 18 inches, with higher
outliers likely and lowest amounts along the southern outer
coast. There is a slight change for high winds in Yakutat, Sitka,
Craig, and surrounding areas as the system approaches. For more

There are also indications of continued southerly flow, weaker
systems with moderate precipitation, and warming into next week
with an extended period of above-freezing temperatures for most
areas possible by mid next week (highs possibly reaching 40 with
low at or just below freezing). Strong winds along the outer coast
are possible as each wave moves into the Gulf through next week.
