Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Busy weather for the southern Mainland including the Alaska Range
over the next several days as a Bering Sea storm track will bring
a few rounds of snowfall. The next one comes tonight and tomorrow
with several inches of snowfall stretching from the Lower Yukon
to the ALCAN. Another late week low will bring more accumulating
snow which will include the Fairbanks area.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
There is a rather large and sprawling arctic low which stretches
from the Canadian Maritime to the North Slope. A stalled arctic
boundary stretches from the Yukon Delta to around the McCarthy
area. Bitter cold temps remain over the North Slope and West
Coast, with warmer and cloudy weather along and the arctic frontal
zone. Light snow continues over the AK Range. Looking south there
is a warm front moving into Bristol Bay and this will be the next
storm.

Model Discussion...
Models are not in good agreement, period. There is a menagerie of
solutions with some models farther south and more suppressed,
while others are more amplified and much farther north with snow
totals over the next few days. The NAM is the furthest north
outlier and will be thrown out here, with the GFS and EC being
the favored guidance which does nudge things north, but not much
farther north than the current forecast.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow will taper off tonight with an additional 1-2" over the
Alaska Range and Tanana Flats, with little if any additional
farther north. Another front will bring more snow tomorrow with
3-6" for the Alaska Range and Fortymile Uplands with 1-3" from
Salcha north to Fairbanks. There will be a sharp cutoff with
little if any snow accumulation north of Fairbanks area. Yet
another round of snow moves in Thu night and Friday with more
accumulations in the 3-6" range, possible locally higher near the
AK Range.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The story of winter will continue along the coast and strong
northeast offshore winds blow over Bering Coast and Norton Sound,
which will keep wind chills into the -40 to -55 F range well into
Friday. Two more rounds of snow the next few days, the first
coming tomorrow will impact the Lower Yukon Valley, Yukon Delta,
and Middle Kusko Valley with snow amounts of 3-7" likely. A short
break and another round of snow comes Wed night and Thursday with
an additional 2-6" possible, this time stretching farther north
into the Middle Yukon Valley and eastern Norton Sound.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
No changes in forecast with a brief period of west winds
increasing over the eastern Arctic Wed through Thu as a trough of
low pressure shifts east. The main impact will be some blowing
snow and continued bitter cold wind chills into the -70 F range.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The extended forecast looks rather interesting as a strong storm
may emerge from the Bering and move inland Sunday and Monday
timeframe, which could bring heavy snow across a wide swath of
the Mainland. Stay tuned...
