Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS....A strong occluded low is currently moving eastward
across the Aleutians. Strong winds will linger along the west
coast through Saturday A frontal boundary associated with this low
will spread snow across the western and northern interior tonight
through late Sunday night. Strong winds will continue in the
Alaska range tonight through the weekend. Mild temperatures
persist over the Interior. A chance of snow for the Central
Interior on Monday.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft...Models in good agreement with a a weak low over
northwest Alaska that will track to the northeast on Saturday.
Southerly flow over the eastern half of the state with a trough
setting up over the west coast. A short wave will enhance snow
fall over the western Interior over the weekend then push slowly
across the Central Interior on Monday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A 996 mb low is currently situated over Point Hope, where it's
producing light snowfall and breezy conditions for the western
Arctic Coast. Contrarily, a general area of high pressure is
currently over the eastern Arctic Coast and Brooks Range.
A frontal boundary will produce some snow late tonight through
weekend from Arctic Village west to Anaktuvuk Pass. 4 to 7 inches
expected. Highs in the teens over the weekend, turning colder on
Monday and Tuesday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A strong occluded low is currently moving eastward across the
Aleutians. Strong winds will linger along the west coast through
Saturday A frontal boundary associated with this low will spread
snow across the western interior tonight through late Sunday night
from the Lower Yukon Valley northeast to Bettles. Snow
accumulations of 4 to 7 inches can be expected over the next 36
hours. As a result, Winter Weather Advisories have been issued
from the Lower Yukon Valley northeast to the Upper Koyukuk Valley
and is in effect Noon AKST Friday. A slight chance of light
freezing rain for the Lower Yukon Valley Friday evening.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Strong southerly winds for the Alaska Range passes starting
Tonight through the weekend. High Wind Warnings have been issued
for the Alaska Range passes and will be in effect at 9 PM AKST
Friday, and a Wind Advisory has been issued for the Deltana and
Tanana Flats and will be in effect at 9 PM AKST. Downsloping from
the Alaska Range will keep the Central and Eastern Interior dry
and slightly breezy now through the weekend. Fairly mild weekend
with high temps ranging from mid 20s to lower 30s across the
Central and Southern Interior through the weekend. Snow chances
increase on Monday for the Interior.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 Through 7...
A strong low that move northward from the Bering Sea sometime
between Wednesday and Thursday of next week. The timing and
placement of this low is in fairly good agreement between medium-
and long-range models.
