Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The low pressure system just south of Yakutat continues to spin in
place and will weaken over time. This system continues to provide
light snowfall for the Southeast Interior from Dot Lake southeast
along the Alaska Highway. An additional 1 to 2 inches is expected
through tonight. A 1009 mb system located just northwest off of
the Western Arctic Coast continues to bring light snowfall and
flurries for coastal areas along the Bering Strait north and the
Western Arctic Coast. This system will move northward further
into the Chukchi Sea and remain there through Wednesday morning,
providing continuous flurries and light snowfall for the Western
Arctic Coast. A strong low currently situated just south of the
Western Aleutians is tracking northeastward towards the Yukon
Delta and Kuskokwim Valley. As it approaches land by Tuesday
afternoon, it will bring strong east-northeast winds and snow for
the Yukon Delta, Lower Yukon Valley, and Upper Kuskokwim Valley.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft...
A weakening 517 dam low in the Gulf of Alaska is starting to drift
southeast along the Panhandle Coast. A 530 dam high pressure
system continues to slide southward and over the Eastern Arctic
Coast, and will shortly remain there through Tuesday morning
before being shoved eastward as a propagating trough moves over
the mainland from the west. A large, broad trough will slowly
propagate eastward and over the mainland of Alaska from Tuesday
evening through the rest of the week.

Surface...
A weakening 992 mb low remains stationary just south of Yakutat
that will slowly spin and dissipate there by Tuesday afternoon. A
weak 1009 mb low located just northwest of the Western Arctic
Coast will move further northward into the Chukchi Sea and remain
there through Wednesday morning. A strong 996 mb low will
strengthen as it moves northeast across the Aleutians before
moving into the Yukon Delta/Kuskokwim Valley region by Tuesday
afternoon. This low will quickly dissipate as it moves east-
northeast over the Upper Kuskokwim Valley towards the Alaska Range
by Wednesday evening.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light snow and flurries are currently being observed on the
Western Arctic Coast as a weakening 1009 mb low just off of the
coast slowly marches northward further into the Chukchi Sea. These
flurries and light snowfall will continue through the majority of
the rest of the week as this low dissipates and a broad trough
pattern settles over mainland Alaska. A mid-level high pressure
system is slowly dipping southward into the Eastern Arctic Coast,
where conditions are expected to remain cold and dry through
Wednesday afternoon. As the broad trough pattern begins to settle
over the mainland on Wednesday, light snowfall and colder
temperatures are likely.

West Coast and Western Interior...
The weakening 1009 mb low to the north of the West Coast is
currently bringing light snowfall overcast conditions for areas
north of the Bering Strait and Upper Kobuk and Noatak Valleys. As
this low moves northward, precipitation is expected to taper off
through tonight. A strong 996 mb low will strengthen as it moves
northeast across the Aleutians before moving into the Yukon
Delta/Kuskokwim Valley region by Tuesday afternoon. 2 to 4 inches
of snow are possible for the areas from Yukon Delta to the Upper
Kuskokwim Valley through Wednesday afternoon. Strong northeast
winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 to 45 mph are expected
to start Tuesday late morning for the Yukon Delta, and progress
inland as the low moves over land. With these strong winds and
snowfall, visibility restrictions may be possible for the Yukon
Delta and Lower Yukon Valley from Tuesday to Wednesday afternoon.

Central and Eastern Interior...
A weakening 992 mb low remains stationary just south of Yakutat
that will slowly spin and dissipate there by Tuesday afternoon.
This low is currently providing light snowfall for the Southeast
Interior from Dot Lake southeast along the Alaska Highway. An
additional 1 to 2 inches can be expected through tonight. A mid-
level high pressure system is currently slowly dipping southward
over the eastern Arctic Coast that will keep the Interior colder
and drier through Wednesday morning. This high pressure will be
short-lived as a large, broad trough pattern moves over the
mainland Alaska Wednesday into Thursday, which will result in
widespread colder and overcast conditions from Thursday through
the rest of the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 Through 7...
A large trough pattern will dominate over the mainland Alaska
Thursday through the end of the week. A ridging pattern begins to
build over the mainland Alaska Sunday afternoon that looks to
continue through the majority of next week. Due to the nature of
the ridging originating from the south, temperature trends appear
to increase, as well as having widespread dry conditions over the
mainland.
