Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Generally weak pressure pattern across the forecast
area. A low lingering off the Northwest Arctic Coast will continue
to bring showers to the Chukchi Sea Region and the Northwest
Arctic Coast, and south to Eastern Norton Sound. Showers will
taper off as the low moves further north and high pressure pushes
in across the area today. A few lingering flurries in the Interior
this morning, then some clearing. A strong low mill move to the
Lower Yukon Delta Tuesday with snow moving into the Lower Yukon
Delta Early Tuesday morning and spreading east into the Upper
Kuskokwim Basin. Significant snowfall is expected and Winter Storm
Warnings and Watches have been issued. Temperatures will continue
to slowly cool.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...24/00Z solutions are in good agreement with the
exception of some minor position, and strength of feature
differences. Run to run continuity continues to improve into the
midrange. There are some timing issues with the precipitation
moving into the West Coast Tuesday morning so will lean on a
blend of the faster solutions as they seem most reasonable at this
time. Will use the SREF to kick up the probabilities, and then
adjust them up a bit to get larger areas of likely and categorical
probabilities. Going with a blend for winds, but will need to
make some adjustments locally to account for strong winds near
the passes in the Alaska Range and Eastern Brooks Range.
Precipitation type continues to be a challenge as some warmer air
will persist over the West Coast as the lows pull some into the
area so will increase the area of mixed precipitation along the
coast.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...The high in the Arctic is 500 nm north of
Demarcation Point at 538 dam with the ridge axis extending south
over MacKenzie Bay, and another extending south over Utqiagvik to
Galena to Whittier. A 525 dam low is over Eagle as it slowly moves
east, and a 530 dam low is over the southwest mainland moving
southeast. Troughing continues from Norton Sound northwest over
Wrangel Island. This afternoon not much change as the high remains
quasi stationary, the low remains over Eagle. The low over the
southwest mainland moves to the Gulf of Alaska and starts to merge
with the low over Eagle. Ridging over the Western Interior
enhances a little, as the troughing over the West Coast pulls to
the north of Norton Sound as ridging over the Bering Sea pushes
north to the Bering Strait. Tuesday morning still not much change
over the Eastern Arctic and Eastern Interior while to the west the
ridging will slide east and push north over the southwest
mainland extending north over Deadhorse to the high in the
Arctic. Troughing over the West Coast will be pushed north over
the Western Brooks Range. A 522 dam low will move into the
Northwest Bering Sea. At 850 hpa...Temperatures between -5C and
-10C. Temperature will warm slightly over the Western Interior to
-5C, and cool to around -12C over the AlCan Border today.

Surface...High in the Arctic is 400 nm north of Demarcation Point
at 1027 mb. Weak high pressure is pushing west over the south
slopes of the Eastern Brooks Range, then south to Cook Inlet. High
pressure is also pushing northwest across the Bering Sea over
Unimak Island to St Matthew Island and just west of the Gulf of
Anadyr. Low pressure remains across the West Coast and Southwest
Arctic with a 1005 mb low 150 nm northwest of Wrangel Island, a
1004 mb low near Point Hope, and a 1007 mb low near Dillingham.
Low pressure to the south with a 1000 mb low near Cape Spencer.
Leeside troughing remains north of the Brooks Range. This
afternoon the high in the Arctic will be 450 nm north of
Demarcation Point with high pressure across the Eastern Arctic
extending southwest to a 1018 mb high near the Yukon River Bridge,
a 1016 mb high near McGrath and southwest across Bristol Bay.
High pressure will also be holding over the northeast Bering Sea
and Gulf of Anadyr. A 1002 mb low will be near Cape Spencer, while
to the west a 1007 mb low will be 50 nm northwest of Cape
Lisburne, and a 996 mb low will move into the Western Bering Sea
300 nm north of Attu with a front extending east across the Bering
Sea to Cold Bay. Tuesday morning high pressure will be holding
over the Eastern Arctic and the Central and Eastern Interior as a
strong 980 mb low moves to 50 nm south of St Matthew Island with a
front extending southeast across Nunivak Island and Bristol Bay.
The low near Cape Lisburne will move to 100 nm northwest of Point
Lay at 1004 mb.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Generally cloudy, but expect some
breaks with offshore flow along the coast. Some scattered mixed
showers west of Wainwright. Inland partly to mostly cloudy. Winds
along the coast east to south at 10 to 30 mph with the strongest
winds around Kaktovik. Inland winds variable to 10 mph, except
near passes south winds gusting to 25 mph. High temperatures today
and Tuesday in the single digits in the Brooks Range to around 30
on the northwest coast with teens and 20s for the Central and
Eastern Coasts. Low temperatures tonight will range from the
single digits in the Brooks Range to the lower 20s on the
northwest coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...Scattered to numerous mixed
showers will continue along the coast this morning diminishing
through the day from the south. Some clearing today before the
next system moves to the Lower Yukon Delta Tuesday morning. Heavy
snow expected along with strong gusty winds south of Kaltag
Tuesday and Winter Weather Warnings and Watches have been issued.
Snowfall amounts of 6 to 11 inches are expected from early Tuesday
into early Wednesday. Winds today mainly west along the coast at
10 to 20 mph, while inland they will be variable to 10 mph. High
temperatures today and Tuesday in the 20s to upper 30s. Low
temperatures tonight in the teens and 20s.

Central and Eastern Interior...Some lingering flurries mainly east
of Fairbanks this morning. Breaks in the clouds in the afternoon.
Patchy fog overnight and in the morning. Winds variable to 10
mph. High temperatures today will range from the teens north of
the Yukon River to the 20s, while Tuesday they will range from the
single digits north of the Yukon River to the 20s to the south.
Low temperatures tonight to 5 below north of the Yukon River with
single digits above to lower teens above south of the Yukon
River.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Broad troughing aloft over the
state with ridging over the Arctic. Zonal flow across the Bering
Sea and Alaska Peninsula. A strong low will set up in the Gulf of
Alaska Friday sending some snow in the Southeast Interior, while
northerly winds will bring snow showers to much of the West Coast.
Easterly winds in the Arctic with flurries of snow showers along
the coast. area of low pressure across the state as a low moves
from the Lower Yukon Delta to the Gulf of Alaska Wednesday.
Showers along the West Coast and Arctic Coast will persist, while
showers will develop in the Southeast Interior Thursday as the low
in the gulf moves near Yakutat spinning moisture into the
Interior. Cooling temperatures will settle in across the state.
High pressure will persist across the Arctic.
