.SYNOPSIS...
A 958 mb low 400 NM NW of Utqiagvik will move to 550 NM north of
Utqiagvik as a 964 mb low by 4pm Fri, then continue north. An
occluded front stretching from this low to Barter Island to
Dillingham will move to Inuvik to Tok by 4pm Fri, and then weaken
over night. Significant rain along this front will move east with
the front.
An Arctic front stretching from that same low south to Anadyr
will move to Prudhoe Bay to the Nome by 4pm Fri, to MacKenzie Bay
to the Yukon Delta by 4am Sat, and then move east Sat night and
Sun. This is causing southwest winds 35kt gusting to 50 kt along
the front north of the Bering Strait and Southwest 20g30kt south
of the Bering Strait. Winds will turn west and decrease to 15-25
kt west of the front along the West Coast this afternoon. As the
front moves east today, west winds of 25g35 kt will develop over
the Central and Eastern Arctic Coast later today. Rain and snow
showers along this front will move east with the front. Much
colder air behind the front will cause scattered snow showers
through Sat. These winds are causing coastal flooding from the
Bering Strait to Utqiagvik today, and high surf south of the
Bering Strait through early Sat, with surf and minor flooding near
Golovin through Sat AM.
A low west of Shemya will move east to Bristol Bay as a 992 mb
low by 4pm Sat, to the Kenai Pen by 4am Sun, and to near Ft Yukon
as a 990 mb low by 4pm Sun. This will spread rain back over
north over the Interior on Sat NW of Denali to Circle, with rain
diminishing near the Alaska Range Sat PM through Sun AM as
chinook winds develop. Some of the precip will be snow in the
Northern and Western Interior Sat night. The precipitation will
then spread back east on Sun PM as a mix of rain and snow. There
could be significant snow in the Brooks Range and Summits of the
Elliot and Dalton Highways Sat night into Sun. The Alaska Range
will likely see south winds gusting 50-60 mph Sat and Sat night.
A 990 mb low will develop in MacKenzie Bay on Sun, then move east
on Mon. This will cause west winds 25-35 kt at Barter Island Sun
night into Mon.

.DISCUSSION...
At 00Z, models initialize 10-20 meters too low on the 500 mb
heights over most of northern Alaska. Models show similar
solutions aloft through 4am Sun, with slight differences
developing on short wave speed during the day Sun with the GFS
being 3-6 hrs slower than other models with a short wave moving NE
over the SE Interior. Will go with a blend of model solutions
aloft, which will be a but slower on Sun than the NAM/GFS and
Canadian models would indicate weather moving across SE INterior
Sun.
Snow levels range from 1000 ft along the West Coast, to 2000 ft
over the Western Interior, to 5000 ft over the SE Interior. Snow
level will fall to surface over the West Coast and North Slope
tonight, and to 1000-2000 ft over the Interior, then rise back to
3000-4000 ft over the Eastern Interior Sat PM, but drop to surface
all northern AK by Sun night.
With precipitation, models show similar patterns for coverage but
differ on details and amounts. Will go with a blend of all models
for precip areal coverage and amounts with the following details:
definite rain along the front in the Western and Central Interior
will move east to Fairbanks this morning, and across most of the
Eastern Interior and eastern North Slope by this afternoon, then
to the Southeast Interior and Alaska Range tonight. Should see
0.10-0.25 inch over most of the Eastern Interior, with up to 0.50
inch over the Southern Brooks Range and near 1 inch over the
Alaska Range. A Second band of rain spreading north over the
Interior on Sat will be likely NW of Denali to Circle and diminish
near the Alaska Range Sat PM through Sun AM as chinook winds
develop, then spread back east on Sun PM. This will bring
0.50-1.00 inch of precip to the area from McGrath to Tanana to
Arctic Village Sat into Sun, with about 0.25 inch for the rest of
the area.
At the surface at 06Z, models all verify several mb too weak on
the low north of Wrangel Island, but verify well on most other
features. Quickscat winds indicated some gales still offshore of
Kivalina at 06Z, which is several kt stronger than models indicate
other than the Canadian which seems to verify winds well along the
coast at 06Z. Models show similar surface features through 4am
Sun, then the NAM and ECMWF move the low NE over the Interior a
bit quicker than the GFS. At this time will use the Canadian along
the Coast and offshore north of the Bering Strait through tonight
to reflect its better verification there on winds, and will us
the NAM for other areas. After tonight will use the NAM for winds
in all areas but slow it down slightly over the SE Interior on
Sun.
Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Arctic Coast will have elevated water levels and elevated surf Sun
into Tue with west winds 15-25 kt.
